The blackbird is the most common and one of the most famous birds in our country. It is even the most numerous breeding bird in the Netherlands. Recently, however, the species has suffered from the usutu virus. Blackbirds are noisy. If a cat is nearby, they warn other animals with their loud alarm call for a long time. The nests are often easy to find, which means that many eggs and young fall prey to cats and crows. Despite these losses, the blackbirds are still very numerous: they compensate for this natural loss by raising many young. In the spring, the blackbird sings a beautiful song from a high place.

from my archives- taken 4 years ago on a trip to my homeland- the Netherlands. We took a tour on the canal at Kinderdijk-- one of the highlights of our time there. It was rather a dark day but we enjoyed it very much! It was my husband's first time in Holland-- a thrill for me!!

De 'Boven Slinge' baant zich een weg door het dichtbegroeide Landgoed Bekendelle, ten zuiden van Winterswijk. Het is hier schitterend wandelen én fotograferen ! Niet alleen vanwege de prachtig meanderende Slinge, maar óók door de vele paddenstoelen (in aantal én in soorten ) !
Finally a Spring day in Amsterdam and the Dutch Elms are coming out in light greens Here's a view from the bridge at the Grimburgwal - more or less at my back - over the Oudezijds Achterburgwal towards the now more or less defunct Red Light District. To my left is the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and to the right part of the University of Amsterdam with the covered booksellers' gallery leading to the Kloveniersburgwal. Of course, you must come to see for yourself! 😇

I was told that there are only about 20-40 breeding couples in The Netherlands. To put their size in perspective: compared to the Blue Heron (family) they are really little birds.
