Until 1663 St Stephen's Green was a marshy common on the edge of Dublin, used for grazing. In that year Dublin Corporation, seeing an opportunity to raise much needed revenue, decided to enclose the centre of the common and to sell land around the perimeter for building. The park was enclosed with a wall in 1664. The houses built around the Green were rapidly replaced by new buildings in the Georgian style and by the end of the eighteenth century the Green was a place of resort for the better-off of the city. Much of the present-day landscape of the square comprises modern buildings, some in a replica Georgian style, and relatively little survives from the 18th and 19th centuries.

In 1814 control of St Stephen's Green passed to Commissioners for the local householders, who redesigned its layout and replaced the walls with railings.

After the death of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria suggested that St Stephen's Green be renamed Albert Green and have a statue of Albert at its centre, a suggestion rejected with indignation by the Dublin Corporation and the people of the city, to the Queen's chagrin.

Access to the Green was restricted to local residents, until 1877, when Parliament passed an Act to reopen St Stephen's Green to the public, at the initiative of Sir A.E. Guinness, a member of the Guinness brewing family who lived at St Anne's Park, Raheny and at Ashford Castle. He later paid for the laying out of the Green in approximately its current form, which took place in 1880, and gave it to the Corporation, as representatives of the people. By way of thanks the city commissioned a statue of him, which faces the College of Surgeons. His brother Edward lived at Iveagh House, which his descendants gave in 1939 to the Department of External Affairs (now the Department of Foreign Affairs).

The lovely bronze hue of Autumn is a delight to see when the leaves change colour and fall , especially when the sun shines in leafy Bishopbriggs in East Dunbartonshire.

About Garden by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay consists of three distinctive waterfront gardens – Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central, spanning a total of 101 hectares. They are set in the heart of Singapore’s new downtown Marina Bay, encircling the Marina Reservoir like a green necklace. The Gardens will complement the array of attractions around Marina Bay.

Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of a strategy by the Singapore government that further transforms Singapore from a ‘Garden City’ to a ‘City in a Garden’, in which the city is woven into a green and floral tapestry. This aims to raise the quality of life in Singapore with a more holistic and all-encompassing programme that enhances greenery and flora in the city. First announced to the public by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during the National Day Rally in August 2005, Gardens by the Bay will become Singapore’s premier urban outdoor recreation space, and a national icon.

An international competition for the design of the master plan was held in January 2006 to elicit the best designs for the Gardens. This attracted more than 70 entries submitted by 170 firms from 24 countries, from which two firms – Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter – were eventually awarded the master plan design for the Bay South and Bay East Gardens respectively.

The Gardens are being developed in phases. Bay South is currently being constructed and is slated to be completed by June 2012. Bay East has been developed as an interim park in support of the Youth Olympic Games 2010, and is scheduled to open to the public in late 2011 or early 2012. The full master plan implementation of Bay East and the development of Bay Central are part of the next phase of development.

Mark Edward Smith (1957–2018) was an English singer and songwriter, who was the lead singer, lyricist and only constant member of the post-punk group The Fall. Smith formed and led the band after attending the June 1976 Sex Pistols gig at Manchester Free Trade Hall. During their 42-year existence, the Fall's line-up included some 60 musicians with whom Smith released 32 studio albums and numerous singles and EPs.

Smith had a difficult and complex personality and was a long-term alcoholic. He was known for his biting wit, evident in interviews, for which he was much in demand by music journalists throughout his career. He was suspicious of the trappings of fame and largely avoided socialising with people associated with the music scene, including other Fall members. The dark and sardonic aspect of his personality often appears in his lyrics; he especially derided music industry people. Smith's approach to music was unconventional and he did not have a high regard for musicianship, stating that "rock & roll isn’t even music really. It's a mistreating of instruments to get feelings over".

The Fall is regarded as one of the most important and influential post-punk bands of the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Although Smith was difficult to work with, he was revered by fans and critics, and on his death was described as a "strange kind of antimatter national treasure". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_E._Smith by www.akse-p19.com

Movie series #5

This is very much an abstraction of one of my favorite films, Tarsem's The Fall. He ties together so many elements that just create this immaculate landscape of beauty. He creates images like i've never seen before. The film isn't scared to use color. It's not afraid to use objects and abstraction of forms to represent it's ideas and how to tell the story. It crosses the real world with a dream-like world that has an amazing landscape.

The characters are fantastic. The little girl in the film, I personally believe, is not acting. She truly seems to be the little girl that is her character. (I don't know if that makes sense) But, basically this film takes so many things that I love and pulls it together with a heart wrenching story. Tarsem is not afraid of art. Or abstraction of art in this film. It's simply a gorgeous feast for the eyes. So, my picture is just a

representation or take on the film. I did include the butterfly and flower to create a face similar to the one in the poster. In my own way.

I've also noticed a common theme with me and my favorite movies. They have amazing scores/soundtracks. I fall in love not only with the storytelling, visuals, and characters, but I also fall in love with the music. Perfume and Willow are by far my favorite film soundtracks. But, all my favorite films have these emotional or just simply addictive soundtracks. The Fall has an incredible score as well.

I love this movie.

Some fallen leaves and a small waterfall just above the Horseshoe Falls on the River Dart in Dartmoor, Devon. This is a delightful walk along the river from New Bridge with plenty of wildlife to see including Dippers and Kingfishers. We were hoping to see leaping Salmon making their way up stream, but timed it wrong. Maybe next time!

The Church of The Fall, September 23 and 28 at Lock 91, Manchester, is one man’s attempt to do justice to Mark E. Smith and his group The Fall. Before converting to atheism at 21, Stephen G. Titley was a practising Christian. He misses the love and certainty of the faithful, his show is about the need to believe in something greater than us all and that thing is The Fall. Expect music, love and laughs. You don’t have to love The Fall to enjoy this show, you just need to love music. Come one, come all, to the Church Of The Fall. FREE ENTRY for ex-Fall members.
