The Dymocks Building, aka 'The Block', was conceived by architect F.H.B. Wilton in the 'Interwar Commercial Palazzo Style'. It was to house the 'less elite' or 'bazaar' style of retailing, with specialty businesses offering a wide range of more unusual goods and services. At street-level it was the home for the bookshop which has developed into the iconic modern Dymocks Bookstore, Sydney's premier bookstore. See:

I've recently been told that my use of the term "Squinty Pier" to describe this architectural landscape feature is incorrect. I thought the term "Squinty Pier" was a pretty accurate description, it is after all a pier and it's not exactly straight, but it is not the correct term to use.
The locals apparently call the breakwater "The Blocks" which whilst I suppose is a fairly reasonable and accurate term to use it's not nearly as much fun to say as the "Squinty Pier".
So for the sake of political correctness and to avoid conflict with any local tradition here is my most recent image of the "The Blocks" consisting of a view showing a pier that is awfully squint at sundown.

Bluescape - Blue hour descends upon 'The Blocks', the quirky zig zag breakwater on the outer sea wall at St Monans, immersing this iconic seascape in a deep and dramatic blue hue.
A long exposure captured on a very high spring tide when The Blocks are at their photogenic best, with the fading twilight really emphasising the cool blueness of the light.

My favourite photo of the St Monans breakwater from my recent trip south. I posted my colour version of this recently called "Bliss" I converted it to Mono on Silver Efex Pro 2. This is the third photo I have posted of this breakwater....unheard for me to post more than one of the same location but its such a good place for a photo that I couldnt help but post another.

Froth and fury - Being perched atop the outer sea wall at St Monans to capture the best view of the iconic zig zag breakwater below, has its risks even at the best of times. On this recent afternoon however, conditions were really rough to say the least, with large waves crashing over the breakwater and a moody sky to boot. Somewhat different to the ultra long exposure calm conditions I'd been so accustomed to on most of my previous visits to 'The Blocks'.
It was great to meet up with David Queenan, Grant Bulloch and John Pow on top of the wall, who not only provided great company and moral support for the crazy conditions, but also welcome shelter from the crashing waves too - thanks guys!

Zig zag moods - A long exposure at sunset of 'The blocks', the iconic zig zag breakwater on the outer sea wall at St Monans.
The rough conditions with the waves crashing over the breakwater take on a somewhat luminous moody appearance from the long exposure, whilst the approaching sunset allows some colour to develop in the sky.
Bass Rock is just visible on the distant horizon catching the last rays of sunlight though a gap in the clouds.

Zig zag - Known locally as 'The Blocks', the quirky, yet iconic breakwater on the outer sea wall at St Monans, is irresistible to photograph as it zig zags on its way out into the Firth of Forth.
Invisible from the harbour and shore and can only be found whilst clambering onto and peering over the harbour wall, it has a magnetic charm, one can spend ages watching the sea crashing against the breakwater as long exposures work their ethereal magic.
Captured on a very recent visit north of the border, fortunately timed at a high spring tide when The Blocks are at their photogenic best.

The blocks - A long exposure at high tide of 'The blocks', the iconic zig zag breakwater on the outer sea wall at St Monans.
The three minute or so exposure turns the Firth of Forth silky smooth whilst the receding clouds create a sense of motion in the sky.

Summer blues - Summer at St Monans and a long exposure of 'The blocks', the iconic zig zag breakwater on the outer sea wall of the harbour.
The blues of summer, amplified in the smooth water of the Firth of Forth, provide a strong contrast to the greys and textures of the concrete of The Blocks.

On route home from the Scottish Car Show, I was still keen to re visit St Monans to get a shot of the breakwater with the tide higher up. I had intended to be here at high tide but it was gridlock getting the car out of the showstand. Once on the road we nipped upto St Monans relatively fast. It was a comical trip to the zig zag this evening with lots of uncontrollable factors happening infront of the lens. Fisherman, Jet Skis and Lobster boats all nipping in and out of my first few shots. It was surprising how fast the tide seems to go out here as the water level was noticably dropping. Eventually I managed to get a few shots with no distractions. This was taken on a tiny 6" manfrotto tripod, my standard kit lens, Cokin A120 Grad for the sky and my Hi Tech prostop 10. In comparison to my low tide shot of the breakwater from Friday I notice I have composed this shot almost identical. I tried lots of angles and pov but this must please my eye as by coincedence I have went back to almost the same perspective. A most enjoyable shoot and a bonny wee place. I'll be back again im sure :-)

"...but things are so complicated and tangled together. I can't seem to seperate them out and do one thing at a time. I don't know how to untangle things."
"Start by thinking about the simplest things and go from there. You're are not in a hurry to decide anything. It may be tough but sometimes you've got to just stop and take time. You ought to train yourself to look at things until something becomes clear."

First glimpse of the famous zig zag breakwater at St Monans it seems this place has a magnetic pull to anyone with a camera, Even although conditions were not what I would have wished for I couldnt help but attempt this photo against the elements. I was heading south to Edinburgh so took a scenic route for a bit of a size up. I knew the tide would be at its lowest at this time prior to arriving. The weather was horrendous during this shot really windy and rain hitting the lens with the aid of my brother holding the tripod at its a shortest setting I am surprised that I managed to get any photos at all. Edited in LRCC and Silver Effex Pro 2. Now that I have seen the place I am intending on returning on Sunday for a high tide photo.

The bunker, the prison in the concentration camp and thus the prison within the prison, had many functions. Above all, it was a central site of terror: imprisonment in the bunker, often for weeks at a time and without sufficient food, was one of the penalties which could be imposed on the prisoners. During this imprisonment the prisoners were especially exposed to the arbitrary tyranny and brutality of the SS. Many saw suicide as their last resort.
The Secret State Police (Gestapo) conducted interrogations in the bunker, during which the prisoners were tortured in order to force confessions. The interrogation room in the bunker was fitted with hollow walls and double doors; these were supposed to prevent the screams of the tortured from being heard outside.
In 1944 the SS had twelve so-called standing cells built. These had a surface area of approx. 70x70 cm, and the prisoners could neither sit nor lie down. The lack of air and light additionally intensified the imprisonment in these cells.

St Monans is a lovely fishing village in Fife. I was a little rushed taking photos here and really wish I had a wider angle lens. That said it was great to get some shots on a relatively decent evening.

The East Pier – and the zigzag breakwater (aka The Blocks) seemed to be taking the brunt of the waves. Fun to watch… from the safety of the West Pier.

First visit and attempt at photographing this frequently pictured breakwater. Must come back and try again in more favourable conditions.
Zigzag - A Summer's evening at St Monans and a long exposure of 'The blocks', the iconic zig zag breakwater reaching out from the harbour wall.
The 14 minute exposure turns the Firth of Forth into a silky smooth greyness in concert with the motion of the moody clouds. The uniformity of the sea and sky pierced by The Blocks jutting out in its chaotic fashion into the Firth of Forth.

Golden Blocks - A summer’s evening at St Monans and the late, rich, warm light casts its Midas touch on 'The Blocks', turning the iconic zig zag breakwater gold as sunset closes in.
The long exposure paints a silky smoothness to the Firth of Forth, emphasising the cool blues of the sea in stark contrast to the warmth of the concrete Blocks bathed in light.
Another unique set of conditions and outcome from this addictive location; every visit seems to produce such a variety of conditions and different results.

Zeescape - A Summer’s evening at St Monans and a long exposure of 'The Blocks', with the late sunshine catching the side of the iconic zig zag breakwater reaching out into the Firth of Forth.
The 25 second exposure portrays a false sense of calm to the sea, as the high tide, coupled with a stiff onshore breeze, produced some energetic conditions with the waves crashing over The Blocks. This dutifully resulted in me (and the kit) getting a real soaking perched atop the sea wall - not the first time that this has happened!
I\'m so drawn to this location as every visit produces such a variety of conditions and different results.
It was great to share the wall with malcolm martin who fortunately managed to dodge the worst of the unruly waves.

Effervescent - A lively tide spills over 'The Blocks' as the sun sets over the Firth of Forth producing a colourful and moody sky.
The long(ish) exposure not only reveals the flow of the tide over 'The Blocks' but also an effervescence of the sea boiling below the breakwater.

The Blocks at sunrise - Sunrise across the Firth of Forth with the early warm light of day delicately catching the sidewall of 'The Blocks' at St Monans.
The rare opportunity to shoot a promising sunrise coinciding with a high spring tide produced a more delicate, pastel tinged, subtle image compared to the norm; images of The Blocks are more often taken later in the day usually under direct, intense, but more demanding harsher light.
A very welcome more subtle, softer result and a most pleasant reward for an early start.

Overflow - A very high spring tide, coupled with a stiff onshore breeze produced some seriously energetic conditions during my recent visit to St Monans.
Waves frequently overtopping 'The Blocks' together with a heavy, moody sky and a splash of colour just above the horizon gave some very dramatic images.
I'm addicted to this location and the vast variety of results it produces depending on the conditions; though being perched atop the outer harbour wall even in the most benign of conditions does have its risks, dramatically multiplied and scarily so when there's a bit of energy in the sea.
