Week 9: The Approaching
Tried something different for this HDR shot: I used a 50mm prime.
I'm losing track of time during summer! I still have to upload another HDR for my 52 weeks because I'm a week behind. I've been taking a lot of photos. It's just that I never really get to editing them and they end up being thrown into my archives. I will eventually get to them all...
DRS class 88 no. 88009 'Diana' passes bridge 33 on theapproach to Colton Junction on 2nd November 2018 heading 6S31, an engineer's working from Doncaster Decoy to Millerhill.
A fellow salsa dancer I bumped into in the Approach in Nottingham's city centre.
My flash failed to fire here, although there's a better shot I took afterwards.

The historic staircase known as The Approach links the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with Downtown Troy. The city of Troy, Rensselaer County, New York is a historic city and the university is as well, being the oldest polytechnic in the English-speaking world. The Capital District Tourism Gnome walked up and down these steps and read the fascinating history of RPI on the interpretive panels.
Another post box, from the same period as the one outside the former Station Road Post Office. This one is on the corner of where The Approach meets London Road. Appropriately enough, a postman can be seen riding in the direction of Station Road, and is passing under the railway bridge. He is probably heading for the Royal Mail depot in Love Lane.
Day 160/365 Comments/feedback welcomed.
I have shot in and around here often and not surprisingly as its a beautiful place to be. Hard to believe its in a city (London). Hard to believe also that there are a constant stream of planes going across the shot behind my head on their approach to the airport. Im surprised there isnt one in the shot!

Ya ya yaaah.... I know I said I'd have this new Red Letter Days up by this last weekend, but the darned thing wouldn't cooperate as a single piece.
Instead, I have what will likely be a four-parter.
Hmm. Oh well.

The approach to the castle from the road below is quite dramatic. The rocky crag towers above you, the castle rising from it almost organically! Lutyens not only added further rooms but more windows, others he extended to form banks of panels not unlike those found in weavers cottages in Yorkshire. These features, along with the smooth parapet and upturned arrow slits was very much his signature style.
Exhibition Review - Evren Tekinoktay :'Ulalume' The Approach, London till Oct 4th 2015.
Tekinotay's erstwhile mice
have chewed their way
into an alternate history of
femininity. - Drenched Co
Comment: "A curious depiction of womanhood that is fresh, enjoyable albeit sparse. I especially enjoyed 'Bambi', an alternate breathing, moving neon-lit 'mousetrap'. " - JayZee

Exhibition Review - Helene Appel,Stuart Cumberland, Jack Lavender, Hannah Lees, Charles Mayton, Puppies Puppies, Oliver Sutherland, Hayley Tompkins and Holly White:'Is this living?' The Approach, London till 7th Feb 2016.
At The Approach, I encountered each work "as an unexpected object, a Pandora's box...produced and consumed with a peculiar curiosity, a kind of sacred relish." - Drenched Co.
( Excerpt from Roland Barthes' 'Writing Degree Zero)
Comment: "I entered this exhibition to a site of an explosion, emanating from Lavender's spent campfire, from which scattered the poetic potentialities of the word 'consumption'. And how fresh and messy a take! Is life worth living when colonised by ideas of production and consumption? Perhaps the exhibition also explores an oblique view on how food comes to rescue us from the demands of efficiency and profit. The activities of producing and consuming food shape us, our relationships and places care before commerce. See, for instance, champagne celebrations, communal campsites, social texture of kitchens etc. Or am I reaching?" - FaSa

here's a simple, corny, unadulturated bit of "true story". please forgive in advance the "this was part of my horrible childhood" lack of poetry, lack of finesse, preponderance of "look, at the bad place from that bad time" comments. i just don't know how else to put this here right now.
i grew up in pittsburgh pa. moved to california at 28. this is the 2nd of my few returns that i sought out the first of the houses i remember living in as a child (of probably 10 or so?) i believe i was 4ish to 8ish years old, and had a sister 4 years younger during this time.
the house was a tenement/row house in lawrenceville - a poor/working class mostly polish/irish neighborhood. the location was an alley called garden way, of all things ...
this is my first visual remembrance, this curious building here on main at garden way.
read on ...
