Winifred was built in 1885 by the Hunslet Engine Company for the Penrhyn Slate Quarry. She spent most of her working life at Port Penrhyn where she sorted wagons of slate ready for loading onto ships for transport all over the world. She then spent the last ten years of her life working in the quarry itself.

When the quarry decided to change to diesel locomotives she was sold and transported to America where she spent the next 50 years in a museum store out of sight.

She was purchased by Julian Birley in 2012 and brought home to Wales. Following completion of an extensive overhaul in our own workshops Winifred returned to steam in the spring of 2015.

The end of April is right at the end of our spring corn planting season, but these popcorn plants were sprouted inside in 6-packs because of the recent cold nights. Since they are up and growing I don't have to worry about seed rotting in cold, damp soil.

A helper, in the pix, and I planted them 1-foot apart in all directions - there are 10 rows. This makes a perfect 10-foot square block of popcorn - almost 100 plants. This was good seed as I started 108 and ended up with 4 short of 100. Just what I needed.

This is a variety of popcorn the Organic Gardening Magazine "Test Gardeners" are testing this year - and since I am one of the13, I get to enjoy the harvest.

This is my first attempt at growing popcorn - and I probably would never have thought of growing it if I wasn't asked to test it.

I love popcorn - Now I am excited about harvesting and popping corn that I grew.

You can see some of my late planted garlic at the very back of the bed (part of a test) - behind the little corn seedlings. To the left is a clump of daffodils that just finished blooming and the big tree to the right is a "Wonderful" pomegranate. The blue garbage can stores the fertilizer that I blend myself.
