Bagpiping has been an integral part of the campus life at Carnegie Mellon University since 1939. The Kiltie Band was started by Lewis W. Davidson, and each year students who were interested in learning to play the bagpipes could enroll.

Hamerschlag Hall, Porter Hall, and Doherty Hall all have green roofs. A green roof reduces cooling and heating energy consumption, protects the roof's structural elements from UV rays, extends the life of the roof, and lowers storm water waste streams. Carnegie Mellon currently has 5,644 sq. ft. of green roof tray systems and 35,515 sq. ft. of green roof space. Learn more: cmu.li/VCBuU #The12DaysOfEngineering

Our dean and associate deans have helped shape the College of Engineering, making it be one of the top engineering schools in the country. Twenty-six members of the college's faculty have been inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. Our professors are hands-on educators in the classroom, in the lab, working directly with students. The prestigious Google Research Award aims to support those on the leading edge of computer science and related engineering research. This award is a one-year monetary award given as an unrestricted gift designed to support world-class university faculty from around the world.
