The architectural history of the Palais

I left Vacaville California at 11am on Friday. At 4:45, I flew out of San Fran Airport headed for Amsterdam. The flight was 11 hours, and I had a middle seat. I've been called a lot of things, but tiny is not one of them. I have to honestly say it was one of the most miserable things that has ever happened to me.

We got to Amsterdam at 11:30am Saturday morning. Our layover was 5 hours or so, and then a two hour flight to Rome and a 30 minutes train ride and 10 minute cab right later, I entered my hotel room after 25 hours and 48 minutes of travel time. I did not sleep during that time.

I went to bed last night at 1:30am, and when my watch alarm went off at 4:30am this morning, I wanted to kill myself. by 5am, I was at the Castel Sant' Angelo, which I posted earlier, and I haven't stopped yet.

I have slept a little more than 3 hours in three days, but there's just no time! There's so much to see here, to photograph.

this one is from earlier tonight. I was perched atop a wall, with a 40-50ft drop on one side, and a rickety powerbox on the other that I climbed up. I will continue to post as I go, so I don't run out of memory card space.

I'm also going to try to blog if I can.

The Ghost town of Golden, Oregon. Wild West and Goldmining. "Golden: Established in 1890, this mining town was unique in western annals in that it had two churches and no saloons. The miners went to Placer on Grave Creek for Refreshments. Rev. William Ruble, Leader of a group commonly known as "Campbellites" built the church in 1852. He was ordained and the church simultaneously dedicated by county judge stephen Jewell. Shortly afterward it became the free Methodist church. Another group led by Rev. mark Davis used the schoolhouse for their services, both ministers worked local mining claims. Placer activity on Coyote creek began in the 1850's. Abandoning these claims during the Idaho gold rush of 1860, the men returned to find them being worked by about 500 Chinese for ten cents per day plus rice. The Chinese contractor yielded possession. A 2 1/2 mile pipeline supplied water for the "Giants" (hydraulic nozzles) resulting in the recovery of one and 1/2 million dollars in the next few years. The Josephine county school superintendent Lincoln Savage, traveled by train from Grant's Pass to Wolk Creek, rode his bicycle to Golden, and continued to the greenback mine by tramway to visit the schools. Wilma Gilkey and Edith Allen were among the early teachers. As late as 1906, there were still 36 children in this school. All walls were colored with a light brown and all over them there were some plates with vintage writings, images and quotations.. I like it.

I was up, unusual for me, so I thought I'd go outside and see how the sun was painting the town. Pretty quiet out there (and well it should be... who thought this morning stuff up, anyway?) and it just seemed to me that Glasgow looked... like itself. Flat, populated by bottom feeder chains of mediocre food emporiums the kids in that bus would much rather be at, and not so much by people.

 

So I went back in, grabbed the camera and tripod, and, poof. :)

 

There are 3,200 people in the town, it is 300 miles to the nearest city in Montana, 140 miles to the nearest city anywhere — though that is Williston, North Dakota, and frankly, the only significant thing it has that Glasgow does not, is a Wal-mart.

Not everything that is interesting is on the surface. Although Talkin Tarn is a pretty place, and handy for my 365, there's interest beneath too. Some years ago, when were friends with Iraq, some of their helicopter pilots came to train in this area. One of them managed to crash into the water, and the wreckage is still down there somewhere.

 

I'll never understand international relations. We train helicopter pilots for Iraq. Iraq uses helicopters to drop chemical weapons on the Kurds. We then invade Iraq so a dictator can no longer attack his own people. But how have I got one to this? This is surely not a fitting subject to accompany this photograph! Where was I going with this anyway.

 

I'd been to watch the Carlisle United football match the previous night with my brother. And I was reminded of the prank I played on him when were young. He was six and I was nine and one night I heard him get up out of bed and go to the bathroom. I sneaked out of my own room and climbed underneath his own bed. When he got back, I waited and waited in silence. After about five minutes I suddenly let out a bloodcurdling roar and started pushing him mattress up and down, doing my best monster impression.

 

I heard him cry out and run off down the stairs at high speed shouting at the top of his voice. He didn't take time out from his flight to warn his dear brother of the monster under his bed, I noted, as I sneaked back to my own room and went to sleep. I didn't let on it was me for another twenty years, when I put the story in as part of my speech at his wedding.

Baldwin Street, in Dunedin, New Zealand, is considered the world's steepest residential street. It is located in the residential suburb of North East Valley, 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) northeast of Dunedin's city centre.

 

A short straight street a little under 350 metres (1,150 ft) long, Baldwin Street runs east from the valley of the Lindsay Creek up the side of Signal Hill towards Opoho, rising from 30 m (98 ft) above sea level at its junction with North Road to 100 m (330 ft) above sea level at the top, an average slope of slightly more than 1:5. Its lower reaches are only moderately steep, and the surface is asphalt, but the upper reaches of this cul-de-sac are far steeper, and surfaced in concrete (200 m or 660 ft long), for ease of maintenance (bitumen—in either chip seal or asphalt—would flow down the slope on a warm day) and for safety in Dunedin's frosty winters. At its maximum, the slope of Baldwin Street is about 1:2.86 (19° or 35%). That is, for every 2.86 metres travelled horizontally, the elevation changes by 1 metre.

Some information about the Vienna State Opera that you may not have known.

The Vienna State Opera

In December 1857, Emperor Franz Joseph I decreed demolishing the old city walls and fortifications around Vienna's city center and creating a broad boulevard with new magnificent buildings for art and politics, the Ringstrasse (Ring Road). The Vienna State Opera also found its place here.

On May 25, 1869, the house was ceremoniously opened for the first time with Mozart's DON JUAN in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph, the highest builder, and Empress Elisabeth. A first highlight experienced the Vienna Opera under the director Gustav Mahler (from 1897 to 1907). In addition to the classics of the Italian repertoire, Mozart, Wagner and Richard Strauss (himself director of the Haus from 1919 to 1924) were and are the musical protector gods of the Vienna State Opera.

The bombing in 1945 and the reconstruction in 1955

The house on the Ring was almost completely burned down after a bombing on March 12, 1945.

For the ceremonial opening of the rebuilt State Opera on November 5, 1955, Ludwig van Beethoven's opera "Fidelio" was performed under the baton of Karl Böhm. After the Second World War, it was first the conductor directors Karl Böhm and Herbert von Karajan - the latter opened the ensemble house to the international singer market, had the operas rehearsed in the original language and directed his plans for "co-productions" with foreign opera houses, but which only after his term were realized.

Opera and ballet of the highest quality is offered in this house. The Viennese Philharmonic members are recruited from the members of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. The opera was and will be influenced by its directors - and here it can refer to a long line of artistic celebrities. Gustav Mahler, Karl Böhm and Herbert von Karajan are outstanding names among the many famous directors. After the surprising death of star baritone Eberhard Waechter in March 1992, Ioan Holender was appointed director of the Opera Department and in charge of the house until 2010.

The Wiener Staatsoper

Today, the Vienna State Opera, along with the New York Met and the Milanese scale, has a worldwide reputation, and hardly a tourist in Vienna misses the opportunity to experience a performance in the House on the Ring.

Of course, the Ball of the Balls also takes place here: the Viennese Opera Ball and the Viennese Coffeehouse History find their traditional continuation here with the Cafe Oper Wien.

Kaiser Franz Joseph I. dekretierte im Dezember 1857, die alten Stadtmauern und Befestigungen um die Wiener Innenstadt abzureißen und einen breiten Boulevard mit neuen Prachtbauten für Kunst und Politik, die Ringstraße, anzulegen. Auch die Wiener Staatsoper fand hier ihren Platz.

Der Bombenangriff 1945 und der Wiederaufbau 1955

Das Haus am Ring war nach einem Bombenangriff am 12. März 1945 fast vollständig niedergebrannt.

Zur feierlichen Eröffnung der wieder aufgebauten Staatsoper am 5. November 1955 wurde Ludwig van Beethovens Oper “Fidelio” unter dem Dirigenten Karl Böhm aufgeführt. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg waren es zuerst die Dirigenten-Direktoren Karl Böhm und Herbert von Karajan – letzterer öffnete das Ensemblehaus dem internationalen Sängermarkt, ließ die Opern in Originalsprache einstudieren und richtete seine Pläne auf “Gemeinschaftsproduktionen” mit ausländischen Opernhäusern, die jedoch erst nach seiner Amtszeit verwirklicht wurden.

Oper und Ballett in höchster Qualität wird in diesem Haus geboten. Aus den Mit-gliedern des Wiener Staatsopernorchester rekrutieren sich die Wiener Philhar-moniker. Geprägt wurde und wird die Oper von ihren Direktoren – und da kann sie auf eine lange Reihe künstlerischer Berühmtheiten verweisen. Gustav Mahler, Karl Böhm und Herbert von Karajan sind herausragende Namen unter den vielen berühmten Direktoren. Pinkas synagogue in Prague

The synagogue and the name Pinkas is first mentioned in 1492. It is probable that a prayer house or synagogue already existed at this point. Excavations between 1968 and 1990 have given rise to this presumption, but further evidence must follow.

The synagogue in today's street Široká ulice was the property of the Horovsky family. Isaiah Horovsky the synagogue in 1519 passed on to Aron Meschullam Horovsky who had the synagogue rebuilt in 1535. Horovsky was a grandnephew of the original founder of the synagogue, a certain rabbi of Pinkas. In the historical records there are quarrels between the "rebellious" family of the Pinkas with the long-established of the Old-New-Synagogue suspected who for this reason in 1472 on a wasteland near the church of Saint Valentin founded a synagogue. Parts of this old synagogue have survived. Between 1607 and 1625, occurred an extension of a Renaissance meeting room with cross vaults, with flat stone ribs and domed windows decorated with a lisene on the outside. There also arose the nave of the women and a gallery open with arcades into the hall of the main prayer room. The architect of the reconstruction, Judah Goldschmied de Herz, is buried in the adjoining old Jewish cemetery. On his tomb stands: "On Tuesday, the 2nd Tischri 5386 (1625). Here rests the wise and skillful man Judah Goldschmied de Herz. He was always cautious and did his prayers godly, he nursed himself by his handwork, and according to his plans the whole construction of the Pinkas Synagoge and a part of the Maisl Synagogue was carried out. Glory be to him".

An idea of the size of the prayer room in the Pinkas Synagoge gives the number of seats. In its lower part there were 177, in the female part 100, and in the gallery, which was intended exclusively for women, 143 seats. The Pinkas Synagoge over the centuries over and over again became a victim of floods (most recently in 2002). As a result of flood catastrophes in the 17th and 18th century, She sank deeper and deeper into the ground and had to be renovated again and again.

At each renovation, original decorations were lost and modifications were made. Up until the 19th century, in the Pinkas Synagoge souvenirs of the Jew Schlomo Molcho who had been burned on the pyre in Spain in 1432 were kept, who held on to his Jewish faith and was therefore burned.

In the years 1922-1925, the foundation walls of the medieval synagogue were exposed, in the years 1950 - 1953 also the original plaster; a ritual bath, a mikwe, was found in the seventies and further renovations were carried out later.

In 1960 a memorial for the Jewish victims of Nazifascism coming from Bohemia and Moravia was founded here. 77,297 names were recorded on the walls of the main nave as well as of the adjoining premises. The names of the Prague Jews are recorded in the main nave. The names, the date of birth and the date of the deportation to the east are named in alphabetical order. In the neighboring rooms are the names of the Jews from other communities of Bohemia and Moravia. On the wall where the Thora shrine once stood one reads the names of the concentration and extermination camps in which those people were killed. Source: 636)

 

Pinkas-Synagoge in Prag

Die Synagoge und der Name Pinkas wird erstmals im Jahr 1492 erwähnt. Es ist wahrscheinlich, daß es an dieser Stelle bereits vorher ein Bethaus oder eine Synagoge gab. Ausgrabungen zwischen 1968 und 1990 haben zu dieser Vermutung Anlass gegeben, weitere Belege müssen jedoch folgen.

Die Synagoge in der heutigen Široká ulice war Eigentum der Familie Horovsky. Jesaja Horovsky vererbte die Synagoge im Jahr 1519 an Aron Meschullam Horovsky, der die Synagoge im Jahr 1535 umbauen ließ. Horovsky war ein Urneffe des ursprünglichen Gründers der Synagoge, eines gewissen Rabbiners Pinkas. In den historischen Unterlagen werden Streitigkeiten zwischen der „rebellischen“ Familie der Pinkas mit den Alteingesessenen der Alt-Neu-Synagoge vermutet, die deswegen im Jahre 1472 auf einer Brachstelle unweit der Kirche des hl. Valentin eine Synagoge gründeten. Von dieser alten Synagoge sind Teile erhalten geblieben. Zwischen 1607 und 1625 kam es zum Anbau eines Renaissance-Sitzungssaales mit Kreuzgewölben, mit flachen steinernen Rippen und Kuppelfenstern, die außen mit einer Lisene geschmückt sind. Es entstand auch das Frauenschiff und eine mit Arkaden in den Saal des Hauptbetraumes geöffnete Galerie. Der Architekt des Umbaues, Juda Goldschmied de Herz, ist auf dem nebenan liegenden alten jüdischen Friedhof bestattet. Auf seinem Grabmal steht: „Am Dienstag, den 2. Tischri 5386 (1625). Hier ruht der weise und geschickte Mann Juda Goldschmied de Herz. Er war immer vorsichtig und verrichtete gottesfürchtig seine Gebete, er nährte sich durch seiner Hände Arbeit und nach seinen Plänen wurde der ganze Bau der Pinkassynagoge und eines Teils der Maislsynagoge durchgeführt. Er sei gepriesen.“

Von der Größe des Betsaals in der Pinkassynagoge zeugte die Zahl der Sitze. In seinem unteren Teil befanden sich 177, im Frauenteil 100, und auf der Galerie, die ausschließlich für Frauen bestimmt war, 143 Sitze. Die Pinkassynagoge wurde im Laufe der Jahrhunderte immer wieder Opfer von Überschwemmungen (zuletzt 2002). Als Folge von Hochwasserkatastrophen im 17. und 18. Jhdt. sank sie immer tiefer in den Boden ein und musste immer wieder renoviert werden.

Bei jeder Renovierung gingen ursprüngliche Verzierungen verloren, wurden Änderungen vorgenommen. Bis ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein wurden in der Pinkassynagoge Andenken an den 1432 in Spanien auf dem Scheiterhaufen verbrannten Juden Schlomo Molcho aufbewahrt, der an seinem jüdischen Glauben festhielt und deswegen verbrannt wurde.

In den Jahren 1922 – 1925 wurden die Grundmauern der mittelalterlichen Synagoge freigelegt, in den Jahren 1950 – 1953 auch der ursprüngliche Putz; in den siebziger Jahren wurde ein rituelles Bad, eine Mikwe, gefunden, später wurden weitere Renovierungsarbeiten durchgeführt.

Im Jahr 1960 wurde hier eine Gedenkstätte für die aus Böhmen und Mähren stammenden jüdischen Opfer des Nazifaschismus gegründet. 77.297 Namen wurden an den Wänden des Hauptschiffes als auch der anliegenden Räumlichkeiten verzeichnet. Im Hauptschiff sind die Namen der Prager Juden festgehalten. In alphabetischer Reihenfolge werden die Namen genannt, das Geburtsdatum und das Datum der =>Deportation in den Osten. In den Nachbarräumen stehen die Namen der Juden aus anderen Gemeinden Böhmens und Mährens. An der Wand, an der einst der Thoraschrein gestanden hat, liest man die Namen der Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager, in denen diese Menschen ums Leben kamen. Quelle: 636)

This is a photograph from the annual Na Fianna AC "Bob Heffernan" 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Johnstownbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Tuesday 20th May at 20:00. This race commemorates the years of work and volunteering that local man Bob Heffernan gave to Meath, Leinster, and Irish athletics from grass roots upwards and his work with the host club Na Fianna AC. The race, known affectionately by club-members as simply "Bob's race" is a fitting tribute to commemorate his contribution to this sport. Today's race was the biggest yet with 505 registered participants. There was a wonderful atmosphere as runners from all over Leinster gathered for a great night's racing.

 

This race is part of the Meath Road Race League despite the fact that the race is run completely in County Kildare. The Na Fianna club, who organise the race, have a catchment area of South Meath and North West Kildare. The current route for the race has stayed the same over the past few years. However previous to that the race was held in Enfield and also Rathmoylan. This road race has grown from strength to strength year on year and is now one of the premier 5KM races in Ireland and one of the top club attended races in Leinster. The race starts on the busy Enfield Endenderry road and this requires a big effort from stewards and marshalls. However, as always, the event was a resounding success with personal bests and great runs from many of the participants.

Participants: There were approximately 500 participants .

Weather: A clear evening with little breeze in the face of runners for the first 1km of the race.

Course: This course has a now near legendary reputation. It is fully left handed with very little in the way of inclines. Good road surface. The race started on the new Edenderry to Enfield road.

Refreshments: Lots and lots as is the tradition with Meath Road Running Events in the Hamlet Hotel afterwards.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

 

     ►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

     ►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

     ►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

     ►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

Later that same morning the 2 remaining brothers parted company, the third minifig asked his brother if he wanted to go along with him on his idea but the other brother had other thoughts.

They parted and not many minutes later Second Minifig met a farmer on a plantation.

Second Minifig; Hello farmer, I am on my way to build a house and I see you have some sticks, may I buy them from you?

Farmer; Why young minifig, I don't want anything for them and there is plenty more where these came from.

Second Minifig; Will you be able to deliver them for me?

Farmer; I might be able to do that for you but if you have any left over, don't think you can dump them back on my land. Someone keeps dumping straws as it is!

That bloody mary was a meal in a plastic novelty cup.

Both stones are hard hammers that have flat faces, show signs of great wear, and are likely made of quartzite. Held in the hand, they would have been used in a process known as "flintknapping," wherein the hammer stone strikes a second flint, quartzite, or chert stone, chipping pieces off until the secondary stone takes a more desirable shape. Hammer stones were also used in the process of bifacial reduction, where the secondary stone would be split along a significant portion of its face, creating two useful stones from one.

1. I'm asian and black, and I usually try and wear eye make up to hide it. Only to stop people from making fun of me, which usually happens. But sometimes it doesn't work. I know it's bad to do so, I'm not ashamed of what I am I guess it's confusing I don't even know why people make a big deal of it really. But I never know what to say to make the stop.

 

2. I don't listen to the radio so people think I'm weird. I never know what songs they are talking about at all. I listen to Movie scores, Indie, and Korean Indie music. But I never tell anyone this.

 

3. I'm usually jealous of people that have lifelong friends. Friends they grew up with. I wish I had that. You are really lucky if you have one or two of them. Because my parents are in the army I move every year or two so It's hard for me to even make friends and I believe that's why I'm an introvert. This is also why I live with my grandparents now, I can't handle switching schools every year anymore.

 

4. I wish I was more confident in myself in everything because I don't think I am.

 

5. I hate that it's hard for me speak in front of crowds or even stand in front of them.

 

6. I don't know if I know what love is, and if I should be telling my boyfriend I love him. But he does make me happy and I guess that's what it means? I can see a life together with him.

 

7. I love dogs. My favorite is a Doborman Pincher and I plan to name him Eros when I get a chance to get one and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, I'd like to name Winston.

 

8. I thing mice are cute, but rats scare me.

 

9. I play MMO's, consules, and handheld games ALL THE TIME, I don't know why people are always shocked when I tell them this. But I love games.

 

10. Favorite all time game is...DR MARIO on NES.

 

Anyway, I hope you guys don't dislike me now, it's just hard dealing with people sometimes and where I live now, it's so many close minded people I guess it's getting to me.

This dress has pleats in the back, which make my already-profund butt look positively continental. Fortunately this doesn't bother me.

What has become an annual event that just keeps on keeping on, is the Auto fest Spring car Nats held in Shepparton. Here is a link to the event organisers page, autofest.com.au/.

The event has been going for over 30 years, and for many there is no better way to spend the weekend than with like-minded people, as the entrants burn rubber with an excess of horsepower, that is thankfully quite obscene : )

There was and is everything from the go to woe, handling events, drifting, and of cause burn outs! Burnouts bouncing of the rev limiting, literally hitting the red line burnouts. How much rubber do they burn, enough so I can smell it from my house nearly a mile away : ) PS the smoke signals might be cultural appropriation, so some one should bring along a Pontiac and make it officially ok : P

Jack Danniels www.jackdaniels.com/en-au has a bar, so Tennessee is represented, although in the main part, not much American iron turns up at the event in comparison to the Australian contingent and Japanese cars.

V8s are the flavor, although you might be surprised like I was this year to see a Honda S2000 turn up, a pleasant inclusion, with one of the all-time great 4 bangers in it.

Black snot is a thing, that is if you can handle the close quarters action! You might like to take some year plugs, even then for about mile you will still be able to hear the cars at it.

As a car enthusiast I enjoy the day, friendly people getting their thing on, and having a great time.

 

PS. Make sure you drink lots of water, and keep hydrated!
