It's anarchy gone insane. I'm on assignment in Pemberton British Columbia, The TV news is just so full of sad, I think God that I have the right to take pictures of beautiful things without any fear. Kenneth
I've got that right, don't I?
A few have mentioned they never tire of fall foliage shots and I reckon we'll continue to test that theory for a while. The winds over the last few days have done their annual duty, yet the oaks endure as they tend to do, the last to give up the ghost...tho some only do so with the arrival of new buds in the spring, somehow hanging on throughout our trying winter.
Another very nice day for late October, so off we go to the canoe to enjoy a relatively rare windless day.
We had it confirmed yesterday that our dear Flickr friend, Gérard had left us. I say confirmed because I had noticed he had not reappeared as he always did and the days of his absence were increasingly disturbing. I thought about him often of late...his loyalty, consistent presence and most of all his humor. He is the only one I've ever known who I could really hear laugh when he wrote "LOL."
It's funny how this medium can actually develop what can only be defined as real friendships when one anticipates and looks forward to daily interactions and comments. I recall the shock I felt when he informed us of his condition...and clearly recall also the shock he himself felt in just those few dramatic words. I eagerly awaited his return to Flickr from his treatments and, when he did, marveled at his spirit during this impossibly difficult time.
Gérard and I shared musical tastes and frequently exchanged YouTube links we thought appropriate to an image or an expressed thought. In many ways, we were on the same "wave length" and we discussed and mourned the losses in the musical arena this year. And now he has joined them. It has indeed been a year of loss.
So adieu, mon ami. You will be missed deeply by many, as myself, who have never met or even spoken to you...a tribute indeed. Oh, and I can tell that's you captured in this image by the white head...;-)
And one more link to carry you onward...
This chipmunk that we found deep in the forest was hiding in plain sight. it thought by not moving it would not be found, and that nearly was the case. We could hardly see it in the light as diminished by the trees; had to turn the speed down and the iso up to photograph it. A little light came through a break in the tree tops which can be seen in the eye reflection.

Years ago, I used to walk in a lovely beech wood. I never could remember exactly how to get there. Today, I found myself in it by accident ! I will not forget again.
Processed in Topaz Studio with my own texture applied.
If any one of you has lost something precious to you, I hope you find it again, whether it be material or spiritual.
Thank you, as always, for taking a look.
A pair of Steel-blue Cricket Hunter Wasps circled my yard for several days. The only place they would stop was on the orange flowers of the Butterfly Weed.
They strongly resemble Blue Mud Dauber Wasps, which have a longer pedicel (the "stalk" that connects their thorax to their abdomen).
Butterfly Weed is a native plant species, and my favorite Michigan wildflower. Ironically, I have never seen a butterfly land on the flowers, although it does attract a variety of wasps and hornets.
Mourning Doves (Zenaida macroura). This pair of love birds have been hanging around my property for the past four years. They use the Spanish moss hanging in my oak tree to build their nests.
They try nesting in some unusual places around my yard. Hanging planters are their favorites. Every spring they go through this ritual of affection for each other and then its off to forage for twigs and moss. Wonder where their nest will be this time?
This tree at the Quiraing on Skye must be one of the most photographed trees in Scotland. It's certainly very photogenic. So much so that it's hard not to take the classic shot. I did however head over to see if I could capture some nice clouds just before sunrise too.
For some that phrase would describe their eyes after a late night of partying and ringing in the New Year. For me on this first morning of the 20s, it meant first-light reaching Towers of the Virgin in Zion National Park.
Being a native East-Coaster, who has transplanted to life on the West Coast, I still feel that the New Year occurs when the crystal ball drops in New York, and that's the end. So, with the aide of staid Springdale, Utah, it was easy to get an early bedtime on New Years Eve so we could begin the trek to the Canyon Overlook Trail at 6:00 AM to catch first-light and sunrise from this vantage.
The trail is a relatively flat mile hike with a few tricky spots where the ice and slickrock conspire to give even the most sure-footed concern in the dark. Once we reached the overlook, I was a little concerned that our cold trek may have been for naught, due to the heavy cloud cover. Though they were thick overhead, there still was some clearing to the East, along the sun on the horizon to light a narrow band, reflecting off the cloud bottoms and warming the sheer rocks faces of the Temple of the Virgin ahead. This image was captured about 10-15 minutes before the local sunrise time, and is considerably brighter than what we saw with our eyes, due to the 20-second exposure.
Once the actual sun rays reached the Temple directly, the light only lit the areas seen here in red for less than 5 minutes before disappearing above the clouds for the remainder of the day.

… and closer to the training pen. This look is very familiar to anyone who has horses. We see a beautiful morning fresh with new possibilities to up our horsemanship game, and our equine bestie sees his friends loafing around in the pasture and grieves the ever increasing distance between his destination and his oats! Not to worry, Roanie, I foresee carrots in your very near future!

♫ Keith Whitley - When You Say Nothing At All♫
It's amazing how you
Can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word
You can light up the dark
Try as I may, I could never explain
What I hear when you don't say a thing
The smile on your face
Lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes
Saying you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me wherever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all
All day long I can hear
People talking out loud (oooh)
But when you hold me near (you hold me near)
You drown out the crowd (the crowd, the crowd)
Try as they may, they can never define
What's been said between your heart and mine
The smile on your face
Lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes
Saying you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me wherever I fall
You say it best (you say it best) when you say nothing at all
The smile on your face
Lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes
Saying you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me wherever I fall
You say it best (you say it best) when you say nothing at all
(You say it best when you say nothing at all
You say it best when you say nothing at all)
That smile on your face
The truth in your eyes
The touch of your hand
Lets me know that you need me
(You say it best when you say nothing At all
You say it best when you say nothing at all)

Once upon a time, there was a girl who made a wish
To find herself a love and finally make a switch
Then you came around, you healed another stitch
And I'm glad about that, I can finally make the switch
And I know, yeah I know
Many would like to be in my shoes
And I know, yeah I know
With you, I got nothin’ to lose
When I’m down, you can bring me up
Up-p-p, up-p-p, up-p-p, up-p-p
And when I’m hurt, you know I don’t need much
You can use that magic touch
When I’m down, you can bring me up
Up-p-p, up-p-p, up-p-p, up-p-p
And when I’m hurt, you know I don’t need much
You can use that magic touch
You can use that magic touch
You can use that magic touch
I was running all the time, babe, you came and slowed me down
It’s me, myself and you now, I'm levitating off the ground
And when you came around, you healed another stitch
I was lost, but now you found me, I can finally make the switch
And I know, yeah I know
Many would like to be in my shoes
And I know, yeah I know
With you, I got nothin' to lose
When I’m down, you can bring me up
Up-p-p, up-p-p, up-p-p, up-p-p
And when I’m hurt, you know I don’t need much
You can use that magic touch
When I’m down, you can bring me up
Up-p-p, up-p-p, up-p-p, up-p-p
And when I’m hurt, you know I don’t need much
You can use that magic touch
You can use that magic touch
You can use that magic touch

that bloom, shed and then simply go.
That's the wonders of life: One minute you're here and the Next minute you're gone!
This is where Mother Nature teaches us, how fragile we can become and yet still contain within ourselves, what we really are and should be.
Many thanks for your lovely appreciation of compliments from you here, my dear good flickr friends !!!
Yes another shot of that lovely tree with Florence sitting in the hollow in late afternoon light.
Taken at the BWC.
It can happen at any moment when "that moment" happens.
Usually in my case I miss that moment....
On this occasion I was set up for a perspective shot beneath the L tracks when I saw "that girl" at the corner. She smiled as she waited for me to take my shot. With a smile in return I waved her across. Thank you.......
