Liz is my daughter. The poncho lady has a shop in Cuzco and her inventory is varied and of the best quality. The poncho lady knows this. My daughter knows this. When I tried to bargain the price of a poncho (for my daughter) in Spanish, the poncho lady ignored me. My daughter ignored me. They made a deal and both were happy. The poncho lady was an expert seller. Here she shows a "lliiclla" (or "manta) a finely woven square ("cuadrado") fabric used by Peruvians as a type of makeshift backpack to carry everything from goods to infants and children. This one, hand woven, is sewn together in the center from two weavings approximately 50cm wide each, making a square about a meter square.

Many years ago a daughter left for art school leaving behind a bedroom beyond imagination. Amongst the remains was a collection of fabrics. I scanned these as a memento.
The sign on the Textile School building behind a burned out dormitory for workers down the street from the mill. This was very much a company town and they trained people to work there.
The removal of the TRIUMPH OF JUSTICE tapestry, Flemish, 1535, from the tapestry frame. after the majority of its conservation treatment (underwritten by the IMLS) was finished. The stabilization of holes and weak areas in the tapestry were undertaken while the tapestry was rolled on the "tapestry frame" (paid for by the NEA). To get the tapestry installed on the frame it is rolled from one side to the other -- not top to bottom. Conservators, technicians and skilled volunteers are all needed to handle its great size: 14.5 x 18 feet.
