It was fun playing with getting the saturation directional the way I wanted it on this particular fabric. If I had bought more towels, I would have kept going.

Some comments:

The whole photoshoot takes place in Kyoto, we have been using some restaurant for the indoor shots, and the area around Kamogawa for the shots outside! I am using Shoot-through umbrella as main light for the indoor shots!

Strobist info:

I will insert later the individual lighting information of each shot later, can't upload it as a batch! Also later this month after my new Wordpress based homepage is completed I will have an article about the photos there!

My spouse's uncle Elstner Hilton took this photo in Japan between 1914 and 1918.

I can't quite make out what sort of work this woman is performing.

On the left, it appears the threads have been drawn together to create open spaces. There's a name for this that escapes me.

But where the woman is working, there's a skein of thread, and she appears to be pulling thread through the fabric, both of which would be more consistent with embroidery - unless the thread is being used to pull threads in the fabric together to make open spaces.

Here are some hand woven cotton textiles from Santo Tomas Jalieza, Oaxaca. The triangular cape is a garment that is not generally associated with indigenous peoples of Oaxaca and was made for the commercial markets like the two bags.

Endless stalls in the tourist locations and by the roads sell these beautiful and brightly coloured fabrics.

Abandoned textile mill (1851-2004)

This is from a raincoat of young Miss A which is now too small and destined to be recycled... Shame. I really like the pattern. And colours.
