My spouse's uncle Elstner Hilton took this photo in Japan between 1914 and 1918.

I can't quite make out what sort of work this woman is performing.

On the left, it appears the threads have been drawn together to create open spaces. There's a name for this that escapes me.

But where the woman is working, there's a skein of thread, and she appears to be pulling thread through the fabric, both of which would be more consistent with embroidery - unless the thread is being used to pull threads in the fabric together to make open spaces.

The Swan Lane Spinning Co Ltd. made sure that its mill was recognisable with a number of architectural details. The use of coloured brick in the chimney left us this superb piece of advertising. This 'Swan Lane' design was undertaken by brickmakers Joseph Place & Sons Ltd., Darwen.

Some comments:

The whole photoshoot takes place in Kyoto, we have been using some restaurant for the indoor shots, and the area around Kamogawa for the shots outside! I am using Shoot-through umbrella as main light for the indoor shots!

Strobist info:

I will insert later the individual lighting information of each shot later, can't upload it as a batch! Also later this month after my new Wordpress based homepage is completed I will have an article about the photos there!
