Another Try On 3D Effect... Just want to share with you...

SAD FACE SNOWFLAKE, with good reason. My main computer decided to call it quits today, so this image was edited in my mobile platform, a Microsoft Surface Pro 3, and so was this text! View large!
My main computer is a powerhouse. I’m a tech geek at heart, so I personally built a dual-CPU Xeon E5-2697 v2 CPU based system with 128GB of RAM and a custom water cooling loop with two radiators, one for each processor. It was a thing of beauty, until this morning when I approached my always-on computer to find some motherboard lights on, no fan activity and no way to restart the system. PANIC.
After unplugging all peripherals and testing the power supply, it seems good. Plugging in components worked well one at a time until I hit a failure, and followed the cable to the destination: a voltage regulator on CPU1. I was sunk. Unlike workstation/server motherboards of yore, the voltage regulators are no longer “modules” and cannot be swapped. A new motherboard is required, and let’s hope that it didn’t fry the processor in the failure!
I’ll take my propeller hat off now, and describe the process of editing this image on a tablet PC. I’ve loved my Surface since I first bought it a few years ago, and it has aged gracefully. The Surface Pro 4 is the current model, with a version 5 on the horizon, but I’ve for version 3 and the proof is in the pudding. Complex editing can be done on such a platform, but it’s not as elegant as the beast of a computer that I rely on for my daily work. Sigh…
A smaller screen means less can be seen at any given time, and I didn’t have an adapter to plug my 32” 4K display into my Surface, if it could even handle it. The small screen sufficed for this small hexagonal snowflake, but 12” vs. 32” is a dramatic difference. I remember playing video games like Doom 3 in high school on a 15” monitor and was amazed, but how a 12” screen, sitting directly in front of my Asus ProArt 32” display, seems silly.
For those curious, the voltage regulator failed on an Asus Z9PE-D8 WS. I’m a fan of Asus hardware, but having this motherboard fail just a few months out of warranty… ugh. It feels like a slap in the face. I’ll be evaluating other manufacturers for my next workstation board, as there is a growing competition in this area!
[Enough about the tech talk!] Okay, so this snowflake? It shows a beautiful arrangement of three-fold symmetry with subtle showcases of thin film interference. It’s not complex, and it likely grew within minutes, which would have been a brilliant thing to see from a camera angle fixed as we currently see it. Imagine this snowflake growing from the very middle outwards, and how fascinating the transitions would be as the features developed. It’s a goal of mine to show you that personally, but there are many levels of technology in the way. Maybe someday.
If you want the insight on how images like this are made, and how snowflakes like this come to be, pick up a copy of Sky Crystals: www.skycrystals.ca/book/ - and be inspired. You’ll also help me afford my current repair bills! That’d be nice. :)
thank you! all of you!

may not sound like a lot to all you "100,000+ views" people, but its a lot for me. i only got a flickr for the heck of it, to see if i was any good, but now its more of a way of expression. where no one is watching me. no one has expectations for me. like my own thing.
thanks to every one of you who has ever looked at any of my photos. thanks for the awesome comments, messages, and favorites. i would definitely not be taking pictures if i hadnt had such great support. and especially thank you for your photos. they inspire me so much, and make me want to take fantastic pictures more and more.
thank you for you.
so thanks. from the bottom of my heart.
this is a very sappy paragraph but i dont care. because its true. <3

EEA Circular Stapler made by Medtronic which is used for various surgeries requiring an intestinal anastomosis (connection between two adjacent tubes / channels). This part is the anvil which is pushed through two small holes, one made on each part of the adjacent sections of bowel. The pointed spot can be sutured and directed into the other end of the stapler. The device has a ring of circular staples in a dual layer arrangement. Upon triggering the stapler, first the two sections are stapled together and then a built in blade is used against the tough white part of the anvil to cut a hole and complete the anastomosis. There are other ways of completing an anastomosis such as manually using suture or with linear staplers.

The image on Flickr is NOT "true" high dynamic range. The youtube video youtu.be/kaohBh35Mlg contains a still of this image in "true" HDR, which is not the same thing as photography's definition of HDR. (You need to view the YouTube video on an HDR TV/monitor in order to see the proper colors for the wide color gamut and contrast)
This YouTube video is unlike HDR in normal photography where wide colors and highlights are compressed into an SDR image, instead in true HDR the large ranges are kept.

The R|Z568M Nixie Tube is a revival of an antique technology: rediscovered, hand crafted, and made brand new by Dalibor Farny. Previously, no one was making any nixie tubes and the process was becoming a lost art. Thankfully due to much interest by hobbyists and enthusiasts both with and without technical knowledge of high voltage electronics, the nixie tube has made a comeback due to it's beautiful aesthetics and the fun of learning the design of power electronics. One can be a teenager or even an adult with an interest and buy a premade kit, or one can be an expert at electronics and design their own clock circuit & power supply from scratch. That is the beauty of such a simple yet complex device. Nowadays most use micro-controllers to run such nixie tube clocks allowing for people to learn programming too and for more features to be packed into such displays.
The R|Z568M Nixie Tube is one of the largest known nixie tubes measuring in at a symbol height of 50 mm (2 inches) and a glass diameter of 50 mm (2 inches). The total height including the glass and the base is 125 mm (4.9 inches) and the total diameter is 53 mm (2.1 inches). This is a huge beast of a nixie tube: both suitably bright and large enough for someone like me to read it across their room without their glasses on. The pleasant orange glow of the neon dimly lights a small room at night in darkness. There is a beautiful halo of blue almost bordering on purple violet light around each lit digit. This is from the mercury vapors being excited by the high voltage which helps ignite the neon around the metal digits. The mercury allows the nixie tube to last a long life: over 20 years or 200.000 hours running 24/7. To see the manufacturing process watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxL4ElboiuA Also visit Dalibor Farny's website (which is a work of art in and of itself with it's animated nixie tubes as you scroll to read): www.daliborfarny.com/
This nixie tube is being used in a single digit Nixie Tube clock and being run at just under 1 watt. It works by cycling through the tens place of the hours, then then ones place of the hours, then the tens place of the minutes, and finally the ones place of the minutes. There is a brief pause between the start and end of the cycle allowing you to tell which numbers are at the beginning. The use of the single digit nixie tube clock is twofold: mostly to save money (the R|Z568M costs €135.00 without shipping or taxes!) and because it allows for more thorough cycling through all the available digits within the bulb thereby reducing the risk of cathode poisoning. In a multiple digit nixie tube clock, the tens place for the hours only alternates between the numbers 0, 1, and 2 leading to much higher uneven wear and tear on the device.

Title: Fort Garland
Date: 1874
Photographer: Timothy H. O'Sullivan
Notes: A correspondent from the New York magazine "Appletons' Journal" accompanied the Wheeler Expedition and published an account of his visit to Fort Garland in the April 29, 1876 edition; a couple brief excerpts below:
“Our cavalcade is composed of Lieutenant Morrison’s division of the Wheeler Exploring Expedition and both men and animals are looking forward to the close of the tedious day’s march…..Across the low divide that separates this valley from the next beyond, we obtain a glimpse of our destination – a rectangular group of brick-red adobe buildings, flat-roofed, squat, and altogether dispiriting in their unmitigated ugliness, with the United States flag clinging to a central staff… And when we are well inside the walls of the fort, we are struck with immediate commiseration for all the unfortunate officers and men condemned to live in so desolate a place.”
"While we sat on the bench in front of the sutler’s store one evening, the old fort was transformed into a very pretty object under the magical influence of the brilliant sunset. The surrounding sandy plain melted into gold, and the mountains were flooded with purple. A pale star rose over the eastern ridge, and while in the west the sky was glowing with gorgeous colors, in the east the light was expiring in a deepening blue. But its only for a moment in a summer’s day that Garland looks inviting, and as we left it to resume our course we again pitied the men condemned to live the year round in this lonely spot."

no, not a CD of course ... I put the camera on the floor directly in the center underneath the cupola and shot this ... Sadly, the whole circle of the huge dome didn't fit into my small camera lens, and was cut off ... and the center part has windows and was very very bright ... so I cut out both which resulted in a CD shape

The Tracks at Brea Trail
What was once a railroad and train depot, has transformed into a 50-acre linear park that traverses the City across four miles. "The Tracks" features a two-way bike trail, with a separate pedestrian path, nine fitness stations, two bike repair stations, seating areas with shade structures, benches, drinking fountains, and restrooms. There are also interpretive signs along the trail that offer information and photographs on the area’s history, butterfly gardens and low water landscaping.
The Tracks has been in the works for many years. A volunteer community task force worked to gather and analyze information as an early part of the process. Outreach began in May of 2009 and led to three separate visioning workshops and a community survey. An outreach report on that effort was compiled in 2010.

The Watchman is a cardiac implant that covers / closes off the left atrial appendage to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvular Afib (atrial fibrillation). It is a surgical alternative to anti-coagulation with medication. Bleeding is a major adverse event of blood thinners which are prominent in the elderly. With this device, patients with Afib can stop taking their anti-coagulation thereby reducing the risk of bleeding while still lowering their risk of stroke.
The left atrial appendage is an area of lower flow that does not contribute as much work to the function of the heart. Blood can start to form clots within this space due to situations such as Afib which further impairs the contractility and flow within the atria. By closing off this atrial appendage, less clots can form in the heart which means less potential for a clot to break off and travel to the brain leading to a stroke.
A minimally invasive procedure where access to the heart is gained via catheters running through veins is used to place this device. Both fluoroscopy and TEE (transesophageal echocardigraphy) is used for visualization during deployment. The device has a self-expanding metal mesh structure that is made from nitinol, an allow of nickel & titanium which exhibits shape memory and superelasticity, to allow for compact delivery through the veins to the heart before it is deployed. On the metal mesh is a porous covering of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) knit fabric which allows for the heart to grow over and fully occlude the atrial appendage. This is the second major revision of the device, the Watchman FLX, which allows for improvements such as partial & full recapture, decreased minimum LAA depth required, two rows of 18 J hook anchors, and a fully closed blunt distal end.
Ignore the small hole... This is a heavily-used demo device.

Link to the release video is here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhBkTzHaIcc Sadly the game download links were taken down due to copyright issues. It is unfair that a totally free fan-made work of art was taken down. The level of the production and design is extremely professional and amazing for what a few immersed fans can create.
In this minigame, you are able to use both a mock 2D side-scrolling camera of the 3D environment or a third person 3D view to play depending on the map's environment. You may kill monsters using various skills for money and potions, buy items in shops, and complete the Zakum boss fight.
The original game that this fan-made version is based of off is Maplestory, a free-to-play 2D side scrolling MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game), which was developed by Wizet, a South Korean company, that was bought by Nexon their publishing company. The original game released in 2003 for Korea and Japan with their entrance to the North American market occurring in 2005. Its unique art style and memorable soundtrack gives a warm feeling of nostalgia to old players.

the driftwood caught the spirit of the beer, as a medium for releasing that spirit into the world,
only the once tinned now rusted badges remain of the fallen soldiers who wore them high acrown.
and the battle scared soul stripped of bark.

I think I have posted this (almost) exact same view before but I like this one that I took today so I am posting it anyways.
This 3D stereographic photo is of my lock picking practice kit. The one demonstration lock is transparent which allows one to visualize the pins for beginners learning how a lock itself works and allows you to see what you are doing when picking. The other two locks are repinnable meaning the top of the lock has a set screw that can be removed to allow for easy access for swapping pins. The locks have tension wrenches in their keyways which is how the lock is turned by a picker which allows pins to bind in the mechanism. In the front of the photo is a basic shallow hook style pick tool which allows you to feel and apply force to the pins. Behind that are a set of custom security pins fashioned after a chess set. From left to right is a pin modeled after a stack of checkers, a pawn, a bishop, a rook, and a queen. These weirdly shaped pins are sure to provide a challenge to anyone that wants to try picking a lock with them!
A pin tumbler lock is a simple device with a central solid cylinder and and outer metal body that the cylinder rotates within. Holes are drilled through both the outer metal body and the central cylinder that house the pins. There are two sets of pins: bottom or key pins and top or driver pins. The key pins engage with an inserted key in normal operation. These have different sizes which determine which key can open that specific lock. Above these are driver pins which may be standard (a simple cylinder in shape) or a security pin. Security pins are shaped abnormally in order to cause binding and jamming when being picked. Examples of common security pin shapes are serrated, spool, and mushroom pins. The interface between the inner cylinder and outer body is called the shear line. When the pins are set to the correct heights such that the top of the key (bottom) pin is just below the shear line and the bottom of the driver (top) pins are just above the shear line, then the lock is free to turn.

This 3D stereographic photo is of the CardioMEMS device, an implantable pressure sensor that wirelessly measures pulmonary artery pressures without requiring any batteries. It is used for heart failure patients to monitor their hemodynamics and estimate their volume status. This aids in prophylactically adjusting diuretics and heart failure medications before a patient becomes symptomatic and has to present to a hospital for a heart failure exacerbation. Reducing hospitalizations and HF exacerbations would aim to reduce mortality and improve quality of life.
The device is pretty amazing as it is very small and works indefinitely without batteries. The main component is a 15mm x 3.4mm x 2mm rectangle with two nitinol wire loops on each side that extend the length of the device to 4.5cm. Nitinol is a metal alloy of nickel & titanium that exhibits shape memory and superelasticity. Nitinol is commonly used for stents and other medical devices as it is biocompatible and folds up nicely in a tiny catheter before being deployed in the body where it expands to its full size and shape. This anchors the device in the distal pulmonary artery.
Its theory of operation is exceedingly simple in terms of design. It consists of a three dimensional coil of wire and two metal plates on two wafers of fused silica encased in silicone. The coil is produced through electrodeposition of gold onto a silica wafer in a vacuum chamber. Fusion bonding is used to join the silica wafers. The coil of wire forms an inductor and the two metal plates act as a capacitor in physics & electronics terms. This arrangement connected in a parallel loop forms a resonant LC circuit (L=inductance, C=capacitance). Depending on the capacitance and inductance of the components, the circuit will oscillate at a perferred resonant frequency. The capacitor in the CardioMEMS is exposed and very thin allowing the silica crystal and metal plates to deform with changes in pressure from the blood within the pulmonary artery. Changing the distance between metal plates of a capacitor changes its capacitance value thereby changing the devices resonant frequency. An external machine can ping and excite the coil with various electromagnetic radio frequencies until it is able to find its resonant frequency. By working backwards, the measured frequency can be converted into an estimated capacitance which can be correlated to an estimated pressure measurement.
The device is placed during the right heart catheterization (RHC) procedure when the physician threads catheters from a patient's veins through the right atria, past the tricuspid valve, through the right ventricle, and finally past the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary artery. Fluoroscopy or video x-rays along with radiopaque contrast are used to visualize the blood vessels and guide the catheters to their destination. During the RHC, the cardiologist will use a Swan-Ganz catheter to measure the actual pressure and calibrate the device's measured pressures to actual pressures.
