Professor Judith Squires, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, talks about the legacy of Winifred Shapland (1886-1963), former Registrar of the University of Bristol:
"Not only was Winfred the Registrar at the University of Bristol for nearly 20 years (1931 to 1950), she was the first female Registrar of any British university. Both are significant achievements. The Registrar of a university has overall responsibility for all its administrative staff, enabling the university to deliver its core academic functions. Winfred held this, the most senior professional services role, at a time when universities were led almost exclusively by men. She was a pioneer in the world of higher education, and I am proud the University of Bristol showed its commitment to gender equality from its earliest days by appointing her to the role.
"Winifred was born and educated in Bristol and worked at the University for over 40 years. She joined the University as a secretary to Sir Isambard Owen, who became the first Vice-Chancellor when our Charter was granted in 1909. Eighteen years later she was appointed Secretary of the University and in 1931 became Registrar, shaping the University as it grew into the institution that we would recognise today.
"Winifred is a quietly inspiring figure whose contribution is worthy of celebration. She was a local woman, who dedicated her working life to one institution, but whose legacy rippled across the globe. At her retirement, friends, former colleagues and students from all over the world contributed to her testimonial. She was a professional woman who reached the highest ranks of the University, while displaying huge integrity and humility. At her memorial service, the then Vice-Chancellor noted that Winifred had ‘a rare gift of combining unswerving loyalty with complete candour’.
"Her legacy is an important one, reflecting the University’s early and continuing commitment to gender equality and showing generations of women who followed her in higher education that no job is beyond their reach."

Feeling free and at home in your neighborhood, town or city. Be and show yourself in the streets. Holding hands with the person you love and smiling at each other in public. Our personal lives occur in the public space. Considering the approaching communal elections, everyone (youngsters, seniors, families, couples and all people - no matter what gender or orientation) asks the local politicians: How do you make a difference? What do you do to improve diversity in our everyday life? Where the rain makes way for the sun, we will walk proudly under the rainbow!
We will all be heading to the voting booths for the local elections on 14th of October. Deciding which circle to colour in is an important decision. A conscious decision can lead to a better living environment in your city or municipality.
And we're not just talking about the redesign of the local park, the policies in the municipal school, or the proper functioning of the local Public Centre for Social Welfare. Your local municipal or city administration can also make a real difference and turn the place where you live into a true rainbow bubble, if that's what you'd like, of course.
So it's no wonder that this year's Pride is focusing on the local elections. Belgian Pride is putting the municipalities and cities in the limelight in 2018, or better yet, at the end of the rainbow! We want the slogan 'Your Local Power!' to encourage municipal and city administrations to enact explicit, integrated local LGBTI+ policies.
Municipalities and cities can and must make the difference. They must accept responsibility for the well-being of all their residents. Flying the rainbow flag at the local government offices during the Pride period is a symbol of this. This is also a way that the municipality or city can show their solidarity with the LGBTI+ community. This symbolic gesture is not an infringement on neutrality. On the contrary, we can only actively work on ending all forms of discrimination once there is recognition for diversity and inclusion.
Policy-makers can make the lives of many citizens that much rosier by taking both small and large actions: by introducing a diversity charter in sports clubs, by making information on gender and sexuality available at the local libraries, by providing logistical and financial support to local associations, testimonials, and courses in the municipal education system, by holding a queer film festival in the local movie theatre or cultural centre, by holding LGBTI+ actions in community centres and youth centres, by providing information on what to do if you are the victim or witness of discrimination, by offering space for intimacy and (LGBTI+) sexuality in assisted-living centres, by training local police precincts and municipal officials, by including Equal Opportunity as an explicit competence within the city administration, etc.
The list of things that cities and municipalities can do is endless. Plus, many of these actions are very easy to implement. Sometimes, your local administration only needs a little boost, and you can give them that boost in the voting booth on 14th of October. A good local administration meets the needs and requirements of all residents. What does the LGBTI+ community in your city or municipality need?
You can already send the politicians a signal that is loud and clear on Saturday, the 19th of May. Make your wishes heard during the Belgian Pride.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Leyton, London*. Here are the details of the project
The Kitchen Garden in Leyron, London E10
BRIEF:
This site was an open corner plot in an end of terrace house. Its exposed aspect meant that it suffered from a lack of shade and was adversely affected by strong wind. An awkward shape, it had fairly low, shabby, trellis-capped walls on two sides and thus suffered from lack of privacy.
The side wall of the house enclosed the third side of the garden, and an area of uneven concrete, which the client stipulated should be kept but made more attractive, bordered the fourth.
The client has an allergy to insect bites, so stated that he did not want a water feature, which would attract insect life, included in the design. There was also an area containing a coal bunker, which the client and Earth Designs agreed should remain as a ‘working area’.
SOLUTION:
The design was styled as a contemporary cottage garden – a variation on a ‘Pottager’s Garden’, featuring herbs with the potential to incorporate vegetables within the raised flowerbeds. The beds, running along the house and boundary walls, were constructed with used railway sleepers and built at odd angles to add personality to the space.
Within these beds, a planting palette of scented orange, purple, cream and green foliage was carefully selected to give year round interest and texture. Two seating areas were included in the design, one for dining and one for contemplation, situated in separate areas to catch the sun at different times of the day.
The dining area, featuring a small table and bench seat constructed from railway sleepers, was given increased privacy with the addition of a hinged trellis closing off its exposed side. The other seating area featured a corner deck, large enough to hold two sun loungers at full spread.
The middle of the space featured a triangular raised bed in which a semi-mature tree was planted, offering shade and shelter from the elements. The main area, enclosed by the raised beds, was carpeted with a combination of slate tiles, sunken railway sleepers and pea shingle, amongst which clumps of lawn chamomile and creeping thyme were planted.
The existing garden walls were raised in height, rendered and painted white, to provide an attractive backdrop to the raised beds while significantly increasing the privacy
of the space.
The existing concreted area was overlaid with slate tiles, to provide a hard, practical, yet attractive surface. An archway constructed from railway sleepers was used to demark the existing ‘working area’ from the rest of the garden. This archway was placed so that it would also offer support for an existing honeysuckle.

The 'Suntrap' Garden in North London: Harrow On The Hill
BRIEF:
This space was a blank canvas as the house was a recent new build, and it was provided with sound fences and a brick wall. The clients desired a contemporary chic garden with playful twists and a sense of humour, with low maintenance planting.
SOLUTION:
This design uses a recurring motif of sinuous curves and spheres to create a fluid space in which all the elements – flooring, planting, seating – are linked by this common theme.
A 2.4m diameter Indian sandstone circular patio located in the top right corner of the space forms the main dining/seating area. From this area a series of curved pathways, all constructed from hoggin (self-binding aggregate) edged with Indian sandstone setts, emanate like tendrils around the space. One pathway arcs towards the garden gate, broadening as it does so, while another snakes down the centre of the space to join a second, smaller sandstone patio directly outside the left hand patio doors. A third path sweeps down the right side of the garden, spiralling past the right hand patio doors to terminate in an eye-catching stainless steel sphere water feature.
The last path will encircle the main focal point of the garden: a magnificent, visually arresting rotating orb mini-office/lounger. This structure has a sculptural timber framework, and is finished in stainless steel and chrome. The interior contains a table and soft seating. The table retracts, allowing the space to be laid out as a single day bed arrangement as required.
An external weatherproof canopy provides additional shelter encloses the open entrance from the elements.
Sandstone globes and stainless steel spheres are scattered throughout the planting beds continue the spherical theme.
The planting scheme also echoes the curved theme, featuring architectural box balls and tall sensual Allium. A mixture of swaying grasses and prairie flowers provide an evergreen backdrop and seasonal colour.

From the initial consultation, when Kat dreamt up an original design that we loved, through to the finishing touches Matt insisted on making, there was real determination to please. Three days ago, my PS3 received the Yellow Light of Death. Devastated, I called Sony about it and they gave me a pricing for fixing it. While considering sending it to Sony, I went on the internet and did two Google searches at the same time. One was pricing a new PS3, the other was for PS3 repair places near New Haven, CT. Somehow, by fate I suppose, I ended up on this website right here. I saw that it was cheaper and more convenient for me, so I dropped my PS3 off two days ago, and received it just yesterday. I powered it on, and began playing like normal, and it is much quieter now than it has ever been. I cannot thank Greg enough, for he has done a better job than Sony ever would have!

This is funny because when I went to your site two weeks ago, I didn't see anything on there about fixing Ipods and cell phones, but I called you and you told me that you fixed these also. I sent in those two things to get repaired and you fixed them in two days. My Ipod wouldn't turn on and my HTC phone, the screen was cracked. I said its funny because, what don't you know how to fix? I liked how we spoke first and you weren't trying to charge me for all of the questions that i had. Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Walthamstow, East London*. Here are the details of the project
The Small Chic Garden in Walthamstowm, East London
BRIEF:
This L-shaped garden had been neglected for some time before the current owner moved to the property. She desired a contemporary sleek look that would complement her newly decorated interior and enhance the new extension. A seating area and water feature were two key requirements, as was the need to make the space feel larger after the completion of the extension.
SOLUTION:
The garden features a decorative concrete and granite patio laid in a diagonal ‘wave’ pattern that appears to travel through the extension to create the illusion of spaciousness. Lines of beige granite setts break up the decorative concrete paving, providing continuity and a sense of movement through the garden. In the left hand corner an ellipse of yellow balau decking, backed by a raised brick planter, provides space for a cafe style table and chairs on which to enjoy both morning and afternoon sunshine.
The rear and left hand boundaries were replaced to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the garden, with a high yellow stock brick wall constructed along the rear boundary and a section of the side boundary. A striking, back-lit stainless steel water blade installed in the boundary wall in the right hand corner of the space cascades into a sunken reservoir mulched with Scottish beach pebbles.
A narrow rill, also mulched with Scottish pebbles, snakes across the space to separate the decking and paved areas. Yellow groove bamboo and a luscious green cordyline provide striking feature planting around the decking, with evergreen flowering climbers adorning the boundary fences. A mixture of evergreen succulent rock plants give an understated sense of coastal living, in between which a select group of perennials appear to herald the changing seasons.
