Aparajita/ Shankhpushpi Plant (Clitoria ternatea) flower

Aparajita/ Shankhpushpi (Clitoria ternatea) is a plant species belonging to the family Fabaceae and native to the Indonesian island of Ternate. In Indian Ayurveda it is commonly known by the name aparajita.

Both the white and the bright-blue forms of Clitoria ternatea are quite something to behold. One of their first describers was Georg Eberhard Rumphius (1627-1702) on the Maluku island of Ternate (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/4297609644/in/photolis...). They're now all over the tropics and are often regarded - for example in Australia - as an environmental weed. It crowds out native plants and by its tenacious vines 'strangles' just about anything in its path.

Here in the the pretty Titiwangsa Park of Kuala Lumpur it's set to take over the colorful hedges of innocent Red Powder Puff, Calliandra haematocephala.

It was a cloudy day when we arrived at Patungan Cove in Maragondon, Cavite province last summer. That prompted me to try long exposure shots of the beach. These shots were just slightly less than 1 second exposure.

Another day for smiling,

another day for laughing,

another day for feeling good,

hoping for a joyous mood.

One more day to have fun,

hope tomorrow has sun.

Even if its cloudy with rain,

it'll be a great day without pain.

Somewhere over the rainbow,

even if the wind blow,

this I surely know.

I will fix my frown,

look up and not down.

For me I know why,

I'll laugh and not cry.

After removal of most of the lawn from our front yard. I left a grassy path, because I like the look. This was taken in Spring, but now the area behind Musky has filled in quite a bit with native annuals (pollinator or "butterfly mix"). The backdrop is the neighbor's front yard, which is like a jungle (not complaining). Quite a few of my trees and shrubs are still in pots, as I think about placement. Fall is a good time to transplant, although some will remain in containers.

Clitoria ternatea is a vine (climber, climbing plant). Its beautiful, deep blue flowers are used in Asia to colour dishes (rice) and tea.

wikipedia: The genus name Clitoria is derived from "clitoris", due to their blossoms' shape that resembles the shape of a human vulva. The first reference to the genus, which includes an illustration of the plant, was made in 1678 by Jakób Breyne, a Polish naturalist, who described it as Flos clitoridis ternatensibus, meaning 'Ternatean flower of the clitoris'.

Choisya ternate sundance is a species of flowering plant in the family Rutaceae, known as Mexican orange blossom or Mexican orange it is a dome-shaped shrub with bright yellow-green, glossy evergreen foliage, above which clusters of fragrant white flowers appear in late spring. When crushed, the leaves have a distinctive smell, which reminds many gardeners of basil.

So exciting to have arrived here on Ternate in the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. This is where the footsteps are of two of my naturalist and botanical heroes.

Georgius Everhardus Rumphius (1627-1702), a merchant turned naturalist in the service of the Dutch East Indies Trading Company (VOC), lived and worked on Ambon, another of the Maluku Islands. As a merchant as well as a botanist he had an eye and taste, too, for the cloves of Ternate. Those cloves made a fortune for the VOC, which exported them to Europe. The biography of Rumphius is amazing... Now and then in past photo descriptions I've given bits and pieces of it.

The other is the excentric naturalist and collector Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913). It was in a letter from Ternate - but possibly he wrote it on Halmahera - to Charles Darwin that Wallace described his own theory of natural selection. Scholars today can still get hot under the collar debating who was the 'True Originator' of Darwin's useful theory. Wallace lived for a time on Ternate. There's some discussion where exactly, and I hope to learn more about that tomorrow.

The view this late afternoon of Tidore from Kota Baru, Ternate, was brilliant and blue and wonderful. But it'd been a long day, and I hurried back to my hotel...

PS My internet connection here is less than optimal, so I may not be able to comment or react as quickly as usually. Please bear with me this week... Thanks.

That was a lovely evening in Ternate, when I decided to go to the seaside to capture a sunset. People in Ternate see very few pale skin foreigners, and many of them have never seen a one for the whole life. When I was making my way to the seaboard, I observed villagers, who were looking at me with amazement, wondering, what I am doing there.

When I reached a seaboard, I found out it is located at the outskirts of the village, and the coast is heavily covered with trash. Still I set up my tripod there to take a picture of the sunset. It was not that spectacular, but my actions attracted attention of the fisherman, who lived in the house nearby. He approached me, smiled, but still was hesitated to talk to me, maybe because he was doubting I speak Bahasa enough to talk. He stood beside me and was looking carefully after my actions for some 5-10 minutes, and then he approached the old ship nearby, reclined on it and started to smoke. He was completely relaxed, and when I looked at him, I got the idea, he is a great model to photograph. I turned my tripod towards him and he noticed that, but still he kept his position. I made a few pictures, and he kept still all the time, I was shooting him.

That place is so beautiful. But I didn’t want to exaggerate it’s beauty by taking a picture from different angle to hide a trash on the shore. That is how it is, and the picture is full of real mood and vibes of Ternate.

A distinctive plump, short-tailed, long-legged terrestrial forest bird with a conspicuous red belly and a broad band of electric blue above that. Head brown and body green. Forages on the ground in humid lowland and hill forest and also in neighboring secondary growth. Calls both from the forest floor and from low perches in the understory. Gives a soft two-note whistle with a quivering, longer first note: “whoooyoop-woo.”
