The Fisherman
Kota Ternate, Maluku Utara, Indonesia
That was a lovely evening in Ternate, when I decided to go to the seaside to capture a sunset. People in Ternate see very few pale skin foreigners, and many of them have never seen a one for the whole life. When I was making my way to the seaboard, I observed villagers, who were looking at me with amazement, wondering, what I am doing there.
When I reached a seaboard, I found out it is located at the outskirts of the village, and the coast is heavily covered with trash. Still I set up my tripod there to take a picture of the sunset. It was not that spectacular, but my actions attracted attention of the fisherman, who lived in the house nearby. He approached me, smiled, but still was hesitated to talk to me, maybe because he was doubting I speak Bahasa enough to talk. He stood beside me and was looking carefully after my actions for some 5-10 minutes, and then he approached the old ship nearby, reclined on it and started to smoke. He was completely relaxed, and when I looked at him, I got the idea, he is a great model to photograph. I turned my tripod towards him and he noticed that, but still he kept his position. I made a few pictures, and he kept still all the time, I was shooting him.
That place is so beautiful. But I didn’t want to exaggerate it’s beauty by taking a picture from different angle to hide a trash on the shore. That is how it is, and the picture is full of real mood and vibes of Ternate.
