One of the records that changed my life. I bought it in 1979 and have been listening to it hundreds of times since then and every time I discover new details. It's almost like listening to a new record each time. The music sounds dark and evil, much like the photo above (probably by Tadayuki Naitoh).

Jack DeJohnette's drumming is godlike. If you could mute all the other instruments it would still be amazing: a relentless 81-minute drum solo that never gets boring.

Another plus is that Wayne Shorter had already left at that time (to found Weather Report): I never cared much for the solos he played for Miles.

In the late 70s it was not easy to find electric Miles Davis records in the small and conservative Bavarian town where I lived. And if you found one it was often an expensive Japanese import on thick and heavy vinyl. Like this one.

My friends, some of whom were jazz fans, hated it. They told me that this is not jazz. But I didn't care. For me it was an eye opener and I have been a Miles Davis fan ever since.

I only listen to the CD re-issue nowadays to preserve the vinyl. The music is the same, but the pieces have different titles. On the double LP they are:

Though seven inch 45 rpms are far from uncommon in Miles Davis' catalog, when I found this 45rpm of the great musician/composer I was quite surprised. I bought this in San Francisco somewhere around the end of the 1970s in a typical Bay Area variation on its advanced record buying/selling marketplaces (especially at that time). The store only sold cut-out 45rpms!

I shouldn't have been surprised that Davis released a “single”, as his mainstream ambitions are well-known. But “mainstream” becomes a pejorative in the mouths of those who detest Davis' “fusion” period, and I really don't see how Miles foresaw that this release would become a huge hit record. He did quite well in the “hit record” market with the two-album “Bitches Brew”, but despite the music's electrified funk flavor, it still takes a dedicated listener to really get into it. The music is not built of catchy pop hooks that get hopelessly imbedded in your brain; in fact, it may be the antidote for insipid pop.

But wait a minute, wasn't Miles, at this moment in his career, listening to and vamping on riffs from James Brown and Sly Stone, those ground breaking hit makers that saturated America (and the world) with their catchy rhythms? Yet . . . he was actually “versioning” those phrases, handing them to his stellar band-mates and letting them turn them upside down and inside out. And then he and his producer, Teo Macero, would cut and paste the recordings into a “song” that could be imprinted on vinyl. He was engaged in the same studio/recording experimentation as The Beatles et all, that began catching on in the late-1960s, but he and Macero definitely took it into advanced avant-garde terrain. The Beatles weren't releasing LPs with four sides, each with ten to twenty minute length “songs”.

“Right Off”, which reportedly includes a riff from Sly Stone's “Sing A Simple Song”, was recorded in multiple takes during the “Jack Johnson” sessions. It was then whittled down and versioned up to an album length AND an A and B side single release with an eye, if not towards the pop market, then to the funky African-American youths who were jamming to James Brown. “Jack Johnson” was released in 1970 directly after the release of “Bitches Brew", and though it didn't do as well as the latter with the fickle record buying public, it is purported by some to be the superior production in this phase of Miles Davis' amazing career.

Powerful stuff. I bought the CBS double-LP at the age of 18 (when Miles Davis was already hibernating) and the Columbia re-issue 40 years later in a vinyl shop in Korea. I don’t know why the covers are so different. The second one is not new – it had been used for the American edition as early as 1975. The first one is by Tadanori Yokoo, the second by John Berg (design) and Elena Pavlov (art). Both designs visualise the spirit of the music well. The fold-out sleeves have different pictures inside and on the verso too. The CBS version has some coloured Gustave Doré pictures inside, similar in style with what you see on Santana’s Amigos, which was released just one year later.
