Taken from a helicopter just before landing, this picture provides a glimpse of the breathtaking approach to the renowned Tenzing-Hillary Airport, known as Lukla Airport. Nestled among the majestic Himalayan peaks, this airport has gained a reputation as the most dangerous in the region, not only for fixed-wing aircraft but also for helicopters. The runway appears remarkably short and steep, seemingly carved into the rugged mountainside. The airport's notoriety for danger arises from its unique geographical location and unpredictable weather conditions, posing challenges for helicopter operations as well. With a short runway, inclined slope, and minimal room for error during takeoff and landing, it presents an immense challenge for pilots of both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. The high altitude and unpredictable mountain winds at Lukla further contribute to its nerve-wracking reputation, requiring skilled pilots to navigate these complexities with precision - Lukla Airport, Himalayas, Nepal

Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, Nepal. The airport is popular because Lukla is the place where most people start the climb to Mount Everest Base Camp. There are daily flights between Lukla and Kathmandu during daylight hours in good weather. High winds, cloud cover, and changing visibility often mean flights can be delayed or the airport closed. Elevation is 9,334 ft (2,845 m) and there is high terrain immediately beyond the northern end of the runway and a steeply angled drop at the southern end of the runway into the valley below.

Tenzing-Hillary Airport, also known as Luka Airport is the gateway to the Everest region, Solukhumbu, Nepal. Gateway to Everest, the world's highest mountain and many other Himalayas was rates featured in a program titled Most Extreme Airports broadcasted in The History Channel in 2010. The airport is where you start your once in a life time trek to Everest Base Camp or many more climbs to follow.

The airport is located at an elevation of 9,100 feet (2,800m) with a single runway of 1,500 feet (460m) with a gradient of 12%. The airport's paved asphalt runway is only accessible to helicopters and small, fixed-wing-takeoff-and-landing aircrafts.

Lukla, Nepal. Runway 24 at Tenzing-Hillary Airport. Noted for its short length, short run-off and steep drop off at the end. Not a problem for helicopters.

The snap was taken by a fellow trekker, there is a fellow guide from Nepal and after Namche bazar, we are close to Kyumjhung, 3660 m.

Enjoy.

Two weeks ago I arrived by plane at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, landing on quite possibly the world's shortest runway. This 10 second Hyperlapse clip captures the experience.

Plane landing on the shot runway at Lukla Airport, Solukumbhu, Nepal

A memorable flight in a small aircraft with some great views and exhilarating sights plus a brief but unforgettable landing. The runway is short! Very! So the drop is quick and sudden. Hold on tight, and enjoy! Amazing + scary (at times, especially when flying between cloudy peaks and hearing the proximity alarm bleeping). Pilot did well. For some details of the airport check en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenzing-Hillary_Airport For most visitors this is where you arrive / depart.
