One of the beautiful attractions of the Black Desert is Pyramid Mountain, a relief form that shoot up from the ground much like a pyramids out of the desert. The mountain has symmetrical sides and a pointed peak.
This natural pyramid is just a few kilometers away from Bahariya Oasis. Locals call it Magic Mountain because of the way the light plays on the texture and material of the mountain during the different hours of the day. The golden colour of this rock is very attractive, especially in the later afternoon sun.
I was out taking picture’s of an Eagle when these two came around to checkout the photo tent I was in.
The annual MTN 702 Walk the Talk charity event took place in Johannesburg this past week-end. In this shot you can see a few of the tents erected for corporate sponsors to entertain their walkers and support teams. Apart from the Walk (5, 8, or 15 Kms) there is a full day of activities and musical acts to entertain the more than
50 000 people who attend each year.
MTN is a local cell phone network, and 702 is a Johannesburg-based talk radio station.
Tent Rocks, also called Kasha-Katuwe, is a national monument administered by the Bureau of Land Management located on Cochiti Pueblo land in northern New Mexico. The conical rocks were formed by erosion of the soft volcanic pumice ejected by an eruption in the nearby Jemez Mountains.
Tent Rocks at the car park of Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, New Mexico.
Every layers are made by volcanic eruptions spewing gas, broken rock, lava and ash. As layer upon layer was deposited, the material hardened, fused by heat and pressure or cemented by materials in groundwater to form the rock type which is called tuff.
Tuff rock is not tough, in million years, water the powerful agent dissolves minerals, fractures rock and sculpts its walls.
Some of the tents have "cap rocks" large hard boulders that protect tuff below.
Many thanks to all those who view, fav or comment my pictures. I very much appreciate it.
The view of the campsites from the boardwalk at Mārahau. Abel Tasman National Park is a beautiful long multi-day coastal walk. New Zealand is rightly famous for its long walks in the wilderness. Mārahau. www.newzealand.com/au/feature/national-parks-abel-tasman/
The eastern tent caterpillar, Malacosoma americanum, is a pest native to North America. Populations fluctuate from year to year, with outbreaks occurring every several years. Defoliation of trees, building of unsightly silken nests in trees, and wandering caterpillars crawling over plants, walkways, and roads cause this insect to be a pest in the late spring and early summer. Eastern tent caterpillar nests are commonly found on wild cherry, apple, and crabapple, but may be found on hawthorn, maple, cherry, peach, pear and plum as well.
While tent caterpillars can nearly defoliate a tree when numerous, the tree will usually recover and put out a new crop of leaves. In the landscape, however, nests can become an eyesore, particularly when exposed by excessive defoliation. The silken nests are built in the crotches of limbs and can become quite large.
Larvae cause considerable concern when they begin to wander to protected places to pupate. Frequently they are seen crawling on other types of plants, walkways, and storage buildings. They are a nuisance and can create a mess when they are squashed on driveways, sidewalks, and patios. But keep in mind that no additional feeding or damage is done by the wandering caterpillars.
Insecticides are generally ineffective against mature larvae.
Eastern tent caterpillar nests are frequently confused with fall webworm nests. Unlike the tent caterpillar, fall webworm nests are located at the ends of the branches and their loosely woven webs enclose foliage while the tents of the eastern tent caterpillar do not. While there may be some overlap, fall webworm generally occurs later in the season.
Biology
The eastern tent caterpillar overwinters as an egg, within an egg mass of 150 to 400 eggs. These masses are covered with a shiny, black varnish-like material and encircle branches that are about pencil-size or smaller in diameter.

The cone-shaped tent rock formations are the product of volcanic eruptions that occurred 6 to 7 millions years ago, and which left pumice, ash and tuff deposits over 1,000 feet thick.

These caterpillars are really quite beautiful. One on its own is fine, but seeing a whole 'nest' of them makes me shudder. Fortunately, someone spotted this one, and then I noticed a second one further down the post.
Yesterday, 8 June 2021, I went on a long morning walk in South Glenmore Park with a handful of friends. The Covid restrictions have just changed yet again, and now we can have up to 10 people in a group, all wearing a mask and social-distancing. It felt so good to see friends, and I was reminded of what amazing birders they are. I don't know the songs and calls of birds, and these birders are so much better than I am at finding the birds.
One bird that we came across was a Philadelphia Vireo, not common here, Though I could not spot this bird, as it was hiding high up among the leaves, I quickly recorded its song, just for the record. I had been lucky enough to see and photograph this species at Point Pelee in May 2018.
The forecast for today was rain, so I knew I had to do some more deleting of old photos. Yesterday, I found that the bar showing how much space one has used up on a computer had turned to red from blue! However, my plans were changed for me this morning, when someone tried to hack into my computer (panic!). The screen showed a Microsoft page and said something about Firewall and that someone was trying to download my info such as credit card info, etc... I didn't take long enough to read it all, but turned off my computer immediately. When I turned it back on, all was fine, thank goodness.
Then, I put something in my microwave and it died! So, I needed to do some research on different models and eventually went out and bought a replacement. Not a large one, but it was still all I could do to carry it inside from my car. Now, all I have to do, is figure out how to use it. Needless to say, no old photos were deleted today.
Tent Caterpillars* were at work in May in the nearby woods. In my photo they are not at home, and are literally out to lunch. They are social creatures and go out in groups to find and eat tender spring leaves.
Here in Central Europe, it seems likely that the caterpillars who built this nest are the larvae of the Lackey Moth**, but I'm no entomologist. The home-making and food-finding behaviors of these caterpillars, and the overall life cycle of the moths they become, are easily as complex and sophisticated as those of the honeybee.
I am amazed at all the different structures that insects, animals and birds create in which to live and to raise their young.
Location: Wooded area, Moostal, Riehen BS Switzerland.
