A design proposal for a multi-purpose park pavilion to be located on the vacant lot fronting East Palm Canyon Drive, between the Cathedral City, City Hall and IMax Theater. It’s a modern interpretation of a Gothic Cathedral abstracted in the form of a Tensile Fabric Structure which I call, "The Cathedral" after our city’s name sake.
The main idea is to create a multi-use open air structure in a park setting that can host a multitude of events that might include concerts, arts festivals, car shows, farmers markets, street fairs, etc. that will draw people downtown who might not have otherwise done so.
The big picture idea is to create a bold city icon that would draw people from all over and help revitalize our downtown by hosting exciting new events and by sparking the interest of local entrepreneurs’ who may not have otherwise considered our downtown as a location for their restaurant or retail business.
Lastly, I believe a structure like this would provide an event destination unlike any other in the desert and inspire pride and prosperity in our community.
At the riverfront we found an overlook area featuring a fan-shaped tensile fabric structure with PVC membrane, supported by a metal frame.
Our guide informed us that it had been designed as a performance shelter for summer concerts. "This custom nautical canopy measures 52 x 28 feet and soars 33 feet above the riverbank. Five steel masts support this landmark cantilevered structure," she stated. "Footage from a concert here was recently used in a Vaseline Intensive Care handlotion commercial."
