Rock City officially opened as a public attraction on May 21, 1932. It got off to a slow start because advertising in those days was difficult, especially since Garnet & Frieda Carter’s mountain-top attraction was not located in a place that people would just happen to be passing by and take notice. It was at this point another brilliant idea of Garnet Carter’s was born. In 1936, he enlisted the help of a young sign painter named Clark Byers, who was hired to travel the nation’s highways and offer to paint a farmer’s barns in exchange for letting him paint three simple words: See Rock City. The distinctive black-and-white signs appeared as far north as Michigan, as far west as Texas, and as far south as Florida. The advertising soon began to produce the desired effect and by the 1950's, Garnet's message was painted on over 900 barns. Journalists began calling Clark and his helpers the "Barnyard Rembrandts", and vacationers by the millions have heeded the call to "SEE ROCK CITY".
Garnet's innovative spirit and Clark's hard work are still evident along many U.S. highways (not particularly the interstate system but the old highway system) and are much loved pieces of Americana. This one in particular is located about 28 miles northeast of Rock City and used to read "Goodbye and Tell Your Friends about ROCK CITY" before being repainted and brought into the 21th century with the dot com. So, it now reads "See ROCK CITY.com" and includes the flaming Tennessee Titans logo for the NFL team located just 115 miles up the interstate in Nashville, Tennessee. While I typically do not like a complete change to one of these great pieces of Americana, this one is pretty cool and works for this location!

Rock City has recently repainted some barns along with a collaboration of the Tennessee Titans. I took this photo back in March but waited until the start of the NFL season. Rock City is one of the most famous companies to advertise by painting barns, but this is the first time I've seen any ad barns for a sports team. I've heard from some Rock City barn enthusiasts who don't like the new designs. I will give them a chance, although I'd also like them to try it on a new barn.
This one is visible from westbound Interstate 24 about a mile after exit 158 in Marion County. However, you can get a better photo like this one by taking exit 158, then go west on the old highway until you can make a left on Shellmound Rd. Go in the morning for the sun to hit it like this.
I am a little sad they painted over the old message which was unique for a Rock City Barn. It used to say "Goodbye and tell your friends about Rock City" since it faces travelers leaving the Chattanooga area. See the old design here: www.flickr.com/photos/brent_nashville/5157879240/in/album...
Another one I photographed is nearby and also visible from Interstate 24. When traveling eastbound, it's about a mile past exit 155 up the hill on the right.
I am told there is a third repainted one I haven't seen along US411 in Monroe County, TN between Madisonville and Englewood.
This is now one of 93 different Rock City Barns I have photographed and uploaded to Flickr in my Rock City Barns set. I'm not sure it's possible for me to get to 100. People often ask me how I've found so many of them. I have drawn from many resources such as books and web sites and sometimes luck, but there's not really one "go to" place to find them all. Well, now on my website, I have tried to create a one stop source for the locations of all of the barns I've been to. On my Map of Rock City Barns page, I have plotted each barn on a Map.

“The triumph can’t be had without the struggle. And I know what struggle is. I have spent a lifetime trying to share what it has meant to be a woman first in the world of sports so that other young women have a chance to reach their dreams,” famously stated world-record-holding sprinter and Tennessean Wilma Rudolph.

Last week, I got the opportunity to see my favorite professional football team, the Dallas Cowboys (aka America's Team), play live just an hour from where I live on Thursday Night Football. They play the Tennessee Titans every 3 or 4 years but only visit Nashville every 7 or 8 years based how the schedule falls and who gets the home game each time they match up. This is now the second time I have seen them in Nashville and the first since October of 2006. It was great to see the Cowboys in person and even better to witness win number 12 on the season!! Let's Go Cowboys!!

First pre-season game of the 2011 Titans football season. Our seats provided a great view of the game as well as a awesome view of the Nashville, TN skyline. Since it was a 7pm game time and we are still pre-daylight savings time, it also provided a great vantage point to watch the sunset.
I tried to incorporate all three into this image which is also an HDR created from three photos taken at -2, 0, +2 EV.
The game was won by the Tennessee Titans over the Minnesota Vikings 14-3.
