Tengboche is the largest and most active monastery in Khumbu. It is believed that Buddhism was introduced into Khumbu in the 17th century by Lama sange Dorje, the 5th of the reincarnate lamas of the Rongbuk monastery.
While the original monastery was built in 1919, various fires destroyed the original over time and it was most recently rebuilt in 1993.
