A tiny flower emerges resolutely as the depths of winter snow recede into spring at the foot of Mount Kazbegi, one of Georgia's highest mountains and a major landmark along the infamous Georgian Military Road.
Georgia's recent war with Russia over the breakaway territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia thrust the tiny country into the international spotlight as yet another former Soviet Republic rife with conflict and political tension. Despite the war and the very real threat of further conflict boiling just under the surface, the Georgians I met were incredibly hospitable and opened their hearts and homes to me. This flower is a symbol of the fierce pride, strength and tenacity of the Georgian people, who have retained fascinating cultural and religious traditions throughout centuries of invasions.
I saw these trees all over the desert southwest... trees with no visible sign of water or life support... clinging... holding on... and surviving.
Good girls.
This small trout lily was photographed in Cornell University's Mundy Wildflower Garden, one of my favorite photography spots. The little lily must have worked hard to push the larger sycamore leaf: if you look carefully you'll see that one of the lily leaves went through a hole in the dead leaf.
This photo was on show (18"x24" framed) in the 2009 Cayuga Nature Photographers exhibit hosted by the Ithaca Unitarian Church (Dec. 2009 - Jan. 2010).
Since moving into my house 5 years ago, there has been one tree in my backyard that has constantly surprised me with its tenacity. If you look at the trunk of the tree you would think that there could be no possible way that this tree is alive, yet every year for the past five years, when spring comes, the tree buds and leaves grow.
Every major advance in human civilization has been made possible because someone was willing to get out of the comfort zone and challenge the status quo. Risk is part of every human endeavor and while some of the risks we all take may seem trivial, others make a significant difference in the way we live our lives.
At TEDxYouth@Barcelona we admire risk takers. In 2015 we wanted to celebrate the stories of young people who took the first step and have had the tenacity to keep going. Young people who power their ideas and initiatives with passion. Every. Single. Day.
The event took place on Saturday 28th of March of 2015 at L’Auditori de Barcelona.
