This tree clings to the earth though the stump on which is grows is slowing rotting away beneath ...in the redwood forests of northern California.
a laurel oak (Quercus laurifolia) leaf hangs on as buds begin to emerge against a clear Carolina blue sky.. ;)
One of a number of trees clinging to life on an almost vertical bank, its roots exposed to the elements. To me it symbolises the harshness of life in the Dark Peak of Derbyshire, the tenacity and good cheer of the local people and reminds me of my own roots in and connections to the Pennine hill country.
Several years ago the english ivy was stripped from the stone wall. This tiny fragment survived and even continues to grow, albeit very slowly. It now has my wholehearted support. It's become a daily object lesson in tenacity and the will to survive.

The Wave Access vessel is a 25m aluminium rapid crew transfer vessel designed for the offshore industry, which its UK-based developers claim will bring significant benefits to operators in terms of cost, time and safety.
Developed by Coastal Charters of Whitehaven, Cumbria, the radical new vessel is designed to optimise the transportation for up to twelve passengers and three crew. Compared to vessels currently used in the offshore wind service, it will dramatically reduce fuel consumption, Coastal Charters claims, and achieve around twice the speed while maintaining safety and improving comfort. It is designed to significantly reduce the personnel costs to offshore operators through increased efficiency and reduced lost time and from an environmental perspective there is a reduced carbon footprint both in build and operation.

Yeah, even a weed in the rocks can be eloquent. When I got to the top of the mountain, this sight just choked me up.

Comments: Of the bald eagle photos I've taken, this is without a doubt one of my favorites. I almost missed this photo completely. I didn't see too many bald eagles when I arrived at Lock & Dam 14 and there didn't seem to be that much activity. But about 15 minutes in, I noticed a magnificent bald eagle swooping down, much closer than usual, from the corner of my eye. By the time I turned to snap a photo, its talons were on the verge of striking its prey. All I could think to myself was "Shoot now, now, now!!!" In the past, I always clicked the shutter a split second too early or a split second too late to record the moment of capture. I didn't expect too much after viewing my results on the LCD screen. Miraculously, I captured the moment that the bird had just snatched the fish out of the water, complete with the splash and trail of water. A little luck goes a long way! My apologies for not posting, lately. I try not to pin up a post unless I have a decent image to show (I could hope), or something to say.
Over the years, I’ve talked to photographers who believe that they’re in a slump. We’ve probably all felt that at times. Hoping to encourage, I tell my friends that in the realm of creating art, there are times of great expression, and times where the well seems to have run dry. We can begin to question our motivation, as well as our commitment to doing what we love to do. On the other hand, when creativity starts flowing again, we get invigorated and run out to capture even more, hoping to push the limit on art and communication with others.
Having to ride those waves of ups and downs, I think, is the hallmark of Creativity. If we didn’t know those dry spells, if we didn’t feel like we should just chuck it all, then how could we ever be enthused about great art when we make it?
I always try to convey: Just ride it out a bit. You’ll soon get back to doing what you love, and all will be well.
I’ve been feeling on the lower side of things. Our fall vacation was cut short because of bad weather, an event I drove hours to cover was a bust as far as pictures go, and there’s nothing cool to shoot in the garden… yet. ;^) During the past week I’ve had interesting and sometimes discouraging discussions with friends where we’ve discussed copyright violations (more common than we know!), whether or not to watermark images, registering copyrights, and whether someone can actually make a living doing this the way they want to do it. Are we avid photographers, or do we become ~ Eeeeek! ~ business people? If that weren’t enough, I had to calculate all the taxes – new ones, even! – that one has to pay to run such a business.
Joy.
Tenacity. “Not easily dispelled or discouraged.”
I was reminded of this when processing today’s image. It’s from Diana’s Baths in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In a small part of a much, much larger waterfall, I saw this walnut-sized rock in the middle of the torrent along with the red maple leaf pinned to its upper side. Even though it took quite a while to shoot the brackets, the rock and the leaf didn’t move a bit, and they never even seemed close to being swept down the hillside.
Do what you love to do. It sure does beat the alternative.

Ive photographed this tree often. Partially felled by strong wind/lightning, it continues to produce leaves in an attempt to survive. It hasn't and won't give up on life. A good reminder.
The wind-blasted remains of a small tree stand as testimony to a life of tenacity in the face of conditions stacked heavily in favour of a difficult environment.
Found on a very windy day at the Coppermine Saddle at 890m a.s.l. on the Bryant Range near Nelson in New Zealand's South Island.

this lovely butterfly on the columbine was a total bonus when I stopped the truck to shoot a waterfall! I loved watching it dance on the flowers... clinging fiercely to the stamens of the Columbine while it fed... dangling and flopping in the breeze! I know
this forest is so calm and peaceful. Funny, when I came back from this trip after a couple nights sleeping in my truck in the rain in the midst of elk herds, by waterfalls, or in a wind storm by a river... people asked me in shock, weren't you scared all alone? I laughed... and said I am much more scared in cities than I ever am out there!
Besides, I had Rio with me! Even if she is afraid of vampire bunnies!
