This week's photo is a soft yet gritty reflection on Moxie's character. She is really such a softhearted dog, yet the typical tenacious terrier in mentality. I like how this happened to show some softness along with the dirt all over her snout. We didn't have a plan yet for this week's photo and this opportunity occurred spontaneously….I love it when that happens!
Moxie has been for the past several days on a mission of "digging to CHINA" in order to capture that elusive Pocket Gopher that has been digging up our back yard. Not successful as of yet, she apparently got discouraged and then distracted by a novel idea of more fun. Upon my inspection of the back yard this morning, I witnessed her playing a little game by herself. She took her tennis ball and dropped it into the hole and began to dig frantically as if she'd finally reached that rascal of a rodent. Then she brought it over to me, all covered with a mud made up of saliva and dirt, and of course expected me to ensue with the usual game of fetch. I said "no thanks" but without a grudge, she took it back to the hole to do it all over again (hmmm...this is sort of like that tennis ball in the pool -game she made up).
I got my camera and flash from inside and sat down on the ground with her while she played. Sometimes she automatically poses when she sees the camera but I wanted an action shot this time. Although I did get a couple of stop action photos, they didn't really appeal to me like this one did. This shot was a moment just before she picked the ball back up to 'reload' it into the gopher mound hole and it seems as if she is pondering the process here.
Technically, not the greatest photo straight out of the camera, it got a little help in Lightroom. I recovered some blown highlights although kept some in and added extra noise control to give it an angelic appearance. Then a small crop and slight vignette were added to bring more attention to her face. I shot this low to the ground, close to and just in front of her and the gopher mound (partly seen behind her), while holding the flash with a DIY bounce out to my left. Flash fired wirelessly and at ¼ power w/35mm zoom.
