"This is a temporary `fix' pending a permanent repair" - a sign attached to a taped-up join in a drain-pipe on the side of the church.

At least they're aware of building conservation...

It took a little while for a lull in the wind to allow shooting this - even after affixing it more firmly in place, a gust came straight along and blew it around...

Thought the idea of a 'temporary map' was funny. Must remember to use this in a presentation about Open Street Map at some point...

I guess some delegates came by train. This temporary station was erected in the yard next to the ConAgra flour mill.

6-year-old Nathaniel Parris, a 1st-grade student at Cullman City Primary School (CCPS), was named Honorary Fire Chief of the Day at Cullman Fire Rescue (CFR) on Thursday.

Parris was picked up early this morning in his homeroom class at CPS by three firefighters representing Cullman Fire Rescue. He was then escorted from the school to a waiting, giant ladder truck. He was then immediately transported to Cullman Fire Rescue Station #1 where he underwent some brief, yet rigorous, training.

After his indoctrination, Parris was sent on a work detail with fellow firefighters. He also participated in several drills and real-life emergency scenarios. In addition, he was provided a full tour of the fire station inside and out. A couple of highlights pf his day appeared to be watching cartoons while resting in a large easy chair in the firefighter’s lounge and large pizza lunch.

In addition, Parris received a certificate of participation, an official CFR turnout gear patch as well as a sworn-in during a pinning ceremony with an official Cullman Fire Rescue badge.

Longtime Fire Chief Edward Reinhardt, Jr. appeared relieved to suspend his duties for a day:

“With the planning of the new fire station, training all these new firefighters and EMT’s, plus my regular day-to-day duties, I haven’t had a day off in quite awhile. I don’t play golf, but I think I’ll head out to Cross Creek Golf Course and try 9 holes. It’s good to know this department will be in very able hands this afternoon while I am temporarily retired.”

Division Chief Brian Bradberry was Parris’ primary liaison with Cullman City Primary School.

I spend much of my time exploring the countryside surrounding my home deep in Northamptonshire.

These highly individual and unique landscapes are my interpretation of the wetlands, forests, valleys and public footpaths of this ‘forgotten’ shire. Northamptonshire is place steeped in history and beauty, which I have accessed in order to create these paintings. The acrylic compositions are sometimes representative of real places but are also distillations of memories and ideas about what a landscape means to me.

I work by developing ideas in a sketchbook and taking photographs before moving onto canvas or specially prepared papier-mâché, impasto surfaces. Although my ideas are planned in a sketchbook – colours, textures, patterns and successive layers occur in a natural, intuitive way. This reflects the idea of a journey or walk through a landscape observing the sights around you. Every following visit adds a new layer to the aesthetic.

Through repeated visits to areas of special interest and then making artworks about them I have become more fascinated and inspired by their beauty. The works focus on how the countryside evolves and is shaped by human action through time.

As with many of my contemporaries my interests and concerns also lie with the state of the environment. The pollution of the environment and the disappearing countryside are elements, which can overwhelmingly seem out of normal peoples control. For this reason the paintings can be seen as memories or fading dreams of lands without roads, noise or other pollution. But I hope that these landscape paintings represent an optimistic reminder of natural beauty in the world that makes us feel free and truly ourselves.

Very high winds and wet weather during our visit in November 2012 grounded the DHFS AS350 fleet for a day or two.

Some permanent Mt Eden bus stops became temporary from 27th to 30th December for some unknown reason. I sure hope they do become permanent again!

This guy came and visited with me on the front porch for a while this afternoon, and he had a number on his collar so I called it.

His owner was thrilled to hear he was alright and safe but couldn't pick him up right away. So he's visiting with me for the evening, and it's kind of fun having a cat for just a little while. He hasn't peed on anything and he's mostly just kind of purred and sniffed things. Goooood kitty.
