With Metrolink’s Orange County Line having been obstructed by a landslide at San Clemente, service has been temporarily suspended between San Juan Capistrano and Oceanside and passengers traveling south out of Fullerton to San Diego have therefore been instructed to board a bus at Irvine as Amtrak’s southbound Pacific Surfliner No. 564 pulls into the station.
Select World Travel were delighted when Lawrence Peachey from DERTOUR invited a member of our staff for a short excursion to Cologne to celebrate the Cologne Carnival. We have sent our Consultant Mr Paul Knapper to discover the dlights of this wonderful German City and will be presenting some Photographs and Video on Pauls return on Wednesday. Today is Rose Monday and one of the Maddest Days in Colognes yearly calendar.
Carnival has been celebrated in the City of Cologne since time immemorial. However, after the French Revolutionary troops left Cologne in 1814 and the Prussians took over, it was high time to "organise" the street carnival which, the new authority felt, was getting out of hand.
Thus, in 1823 the "Festordnendes Komitee" was founded, the predecessor of todays Festive Committee.
On February 10, 1823 Cologne celebrated the first Rose Monday ("Rosenmontag") with the motto "Inthronisation of the Carnival Hero".
Over the years, decades and centuries certain traditions and customs emerged, which are still the hallmark of the traditional Cologne Carnival: the indoor festivities (sessions and balls) and, of course, the street carnival, culminating in the grand parade on Rose Monday. It is the task of the Festive Committee, the umbrella organisation representing well over 100 Cologne carnival associations, traditional corps, etc., to coordinate, set common standards, and preserve the tradition of the "fifth season".
No doubt, the Cologne "Karneval" plays in the Champions League together with the Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro and Carnival in Venice!
The Carnival Season
Given its Christian roots, the date of Rose Monday is determined by the Church calendar: It takes place on the Monday before Ash Wednesday, which in turn marks the beginning of Lent leading up to Good Friday and Easter. Traditionally, the fifth season is declared open at 11 minutes past eleven on the eleventh of November! The Carnival spirit is then temporarily suspended by the Advent and Christmas period, and picks up again "in earnest" in the New Year. Street carnival, also called "the crazy days", takes places between Thursday (Women’s Carnival Day) before Rose Monday and ends on Ash Wednesday. In 2007 the dates are as follows:

No doubt, the highlight of the street carnival is Rose Monday with over 10.000 participants, one-third of them female, 440 horses , 97 floats and 123 bands in 2006.
The 2007 motto: "Cologne is all of us!". Don't miss it!

The temporary waiting room at the new Onslow park and ride site in Guildford.
It opened on 11th November 2013.
Like Merrow, the site has opened without the future permanent waiting room.

Caspian Mine Headframe
The Caspian Mine Headframe is a steel mining building located at north of Caspian Road. The Caspian Mine opened in 1903, the second of three mines opened by the Verona Mining Company. Verona later sold the mine to the Pickands-Mather Company. The original headframe was wooden; the current structure was built as a replacement in 1921. The headframe is a 106 foot high steel-framed structure clad in corrugated steel siding. It is about 25 feet by 10 feet at the base and tapers to about 10 feet by 10 feet at the top. The stanchions constructed to support steel cables leading from the hoisthouse to the headframe are located nearby.
This headframe is significant as the oldest remaining headframe in Iron County. The Caspian Mine was the most productive mine in the county from its opening in 1903 until its closing in 1937. Pickands-Mather Company, the operator of the Caspian, eventually deeded the headframe, engine house, and the surrounding 5.5 acres to the Iron County Historical and Museum Society.

The Pavilion of Portugal (Portuguese: Pavilhão de Portugal) in Expo'98, situated in Parque das Nações in Lisbon, Portugal was the building which sheltered the Portuguese national representation in that event, being erected until today.
The project was developed by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza with the contribution of Souto de Moura. The building has, for entrance area, an ample square covered by an imposing visor of concrete.
The program destined it to the period of the Expo'98, being an incognito the future use. The proposals already had been several, since the use of the space for the Headquarters of the Cabinet, until the creation of an architecture museum. However, it is still used for temporary expositions.
