I can tell you straight away that it is not a cage for HOES - Hamsters of Enormous Size.
Does anyone want to make a guess?
I actually know what these are, but it wouldn’t be any fun to tell you right now.
THE BIG REVEAL!
It is time for the big reveal: Rob Davies Watchman and Roland Bogush are the closest. Rob Davies gets #1. It is for growing oysters. Between the two wheels is a mesh barrel in which you place the spats or oysters. There is a PVC pipe in the water which anchors each oyster float. The tide is supposed to automatically rotate the drum to keep the silt and algae off of the oysters. Most people have rectangular oyster floats attached to their dock. Every couple of weeks you are suppose to turn and clean off the oysters.
Special award ( the Booby Prize) goes to paul wylde for saying it was the remains of Skylab.
THE BIG PROBLEM:
It didn’t work - they didn’t turn. Our neighbor bought 25 of these and it took him and a helper three days to put them together, working from a small boat ...to anchor them to the bottom and to fill them with oysters. They held up pretty well in storms - only a couple floated away ... one of which we found in our marsh. It is speculated that the tide in the river did not reach the high and low extremes needed to turn them. Also, the barnacles may have hindered the wheelsfrom turning and/or cut the ropes. Taking the oysters out of these drums to clean and turn the oysters was more difficult than before so the oysters were put back in regular floats and these drums will now be recycled!
There are plenty of things I could tell you about this image but what I am going to relate tonight is only going to involve the mistake I made.
One of the risks to habits is that you can come to rely on them overly much. A case in point would be that by an unofficial rule I generally keep my Hasselblad backs loaded with 400 ISO film, one back for color and the other for b&w. When I do load a different speed film in one of my backs I try to make a note because I am so used to 400 speed film in them that I have mis-exposed film before because of mistaken assumption.
Before this latest trip up to the Olympic Peninsula I had been working a lot and photographing only a little. As such by the time I got up there my black and white back was halfway through a roll of film I could not remember loading and so I could not remember which film was in it. Normally no note would mean 400 speed but something in my brain was tickling away that this was not true, that I had loaded something out of the ordinary in terms of film speed in this back.
So what are my options at this point with about six frames left to expose? Well I could trust my habits and expose at 400. I could attempt to second guess motives and backtrack through memory to deduce which film I might have loaded. I could meter somewhere in between. This latter is what I did. I figured the only other speed I would have loaded would have been 100 ISO film. So if I metered at 200 then I would only be wrong by a stop. If it was 100, I would be a stop under and considering that I normally overexpose by habit anyway, all would be ok. If it was 400, then I would be a stop over (or two with my usual overexposure). and film so readily forgives overexposure. Seriously, you can get away with three or four stops over and still produce reasonable images. Additionally I was going to be a bit less choosy with those six frames and try to blow through them quickly so I could confirm the film and if necessary backtrack to re-expose any images.
Thus I set off. Unfortunately it was sunny and clear and conducive to heavy ND shooting so "blowing through" half a roll takes on a slightly different meaning when shooting through 18 stops of neutral density. It took a few hours but I managed, wound the roll and unloaded it... to find a roll of Rollei RPX 25. Umm yeah. So metering for 200, maybe overexposing by design by a stop I was still going to be two stops under. That was a bit disappointing. Usually I defer to the decisions that past-Zeb makes. He often seems to think of things that present-Zeb appreciates. But this time I was wondering what in the heck that past me was thinking by loading a roll of 25 speed film in a camera that usually uses 400 speed and not putting a note on it to warn present-Zeb how to expose it properly. Sheesh.
So I had a bit of a sinking feeling in my stomach, figuring not even the forgiveness of film was going to save me this time. Luckily I was still on the same beach and did backtrack to re-expose the images I felt most strongly about. I debated having the roll pushed when I got back but then the first half had theoretically been exposed accurately and I couldn't really remember what was on it, so I didn't want to push process that stuff, so I just let it go, morbidly curious to see how thin the negs would be. Imagine my surprise when the stuff that came back turned out to be fairly usable... at least some of it. This image for example was metered somewhere around 100 to 200 ISO, which means I probably overexposed it to begin with due to the deep shadows in the frame. But that is ok, I wanted the cliffs to be black anyway.
So what to take from all this? I guess mostly that we all make mistakes. In fact you ought to find opportunities to make mistakes. They keep us sharp, they are opportunities to learn, they sometimes show us things we may not have discovered on our own, they remind us that we are fallible in our decision-making. And I tell you about this one in particular so that you know that I am not above making such silly errors. I tend to curate out most of the images I don't consider worth the time to post or your time to see. I edit down to the good stuff, which really means the stuff that I like for one reason and another. And I think with practice and by limiting how much I post I tend to only share the stuff that is noteworthy for good reasons. But that can easily lead to the mistaken perception that maybe I don't make the same mistakes you make. That I don't screw up my calculations or forget something simple and obvious. Well trust me, I do. And sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. On this case I got lucky, no thanks to my past self.

Macro Monday: #Hobby
A hobby most of us enjoy: listening to music. As Nietzsche already said: "Without music, life would be a mistake." While this is a 45 rpm Beatles single (a very early recording of "Skinny Minnie" / "My Bonnie" with Tony Sheridan, 1962, but published on Polydor as "late" as 1968; the sleeve shows The Beatles very young, all clad in leather like rockers, probably taken in the days when they regularly played at the Cavern Club in Hamburg) which I got when I was a kid (the single, I mean), I thought that this actually looks like the cover of a ca. 1978 LP, the debut of, let's say, the then upcoming and most promising, if not to say hot Punk-Prog Band Poly d'Or: "A Case of the Mondays". An elaborate, most intricate, deeply philosophical (in a Punk-Prog way) concept album / Punk opera about a guy called Sir Bob who wakes up one Monday in a shrinking world, and... Do you really want to know how the story goes on? No, of course not, because you all know it, and experience it every week. Groundhog Monday :-) (And please note, I didn't mean to include the sad story that inspired the real life Sir Bob [Geldof] to write his band's greatest hit; this is all about MMs and fun.)
Hoffentlich.)
Why can't you just tell me the truth?
Hard to believe the things you say
Why can't you feel the tears I cried today
Cried today, cried today
How do you win if we all lose?
You change the facts to justify
Your lips move but your words get in the way
In the way, in the way
Kings and Queens, crooks and thieves
You don't see the forest for the trees
Head and heart, on our knees
You can't see what we all see
How do you sleep when the world keeps turning?
All that we built has come undone
How do you sleep when the world is burning?
Everyone answers to someone
Don't lie to me, don't lie to me, you lie to me
Don't lie to me, don't lie to me, you lie to me
You can build towers of bronze and gold
You can build castles in the sky
You can use smoke and mirrors, all clichés
Not today, not today
Kings and Queens, crooks and thieves
You don't see the forest for the trees
Hand and heart, down on knees
You can't see what everyone see
How do you sleep when the world keeps turning?
All that we built has come undone
How do you sleep when the world is burning?
Everyone answers to someone

This road cut on Bluet pass in Washington state has quite a story to tell. First, the bookends (yellow band at left, and entire right half of the picture) are a section of a 160 million year old Pacific Ocean floor that contains material originating from ocean floor down to the earth’s mantel, here conveniently uplifted so they can be inspected with dry feet (part of the Ingalls terrain ophiolite sequence). About 91 million years ago a magmatic light grey andesite dyke pushed through the ophiolite sequence (where the rear of the car is). This all happened down, somewhere between Northern California and northern Mexico. The entire enchilada was later shifting north and ended up here in Washington’s Central Cascade! But that is not the end, about 45 million years ago, another set of feeder dykes for the Teanaway basalt developed, as evident by the dark brown vertical bands to either side of the grey andesite dyke. Except for erosion, formation of the Cascades, building the road not much happened here since...
An Andean bear rests her head on her (very large) paw, appearing to offer an ear to listen to your problems. I probably wouldn't take her up on that offer.

In my dream children sing a song of love for every boy and girl
The sky is blue and fields are green and laughter is the language of the world
Then I wake and all I see is a world full of people in need
Tell me why (why) does it have to be like this?
Tell me why (why) is there something I have missed?
Tell me why (why) cos I don't understand.
When so many need somebody we don't give a helping hand.
Tell me why?
Everyday I ask myself what will I have to do to be a man?
Do I have to stand and fight to prove to everybody who I am?
Is that what my life is for to waste in a world full of war?
Tell me why?
Tell me your worries my turn listen.

I wanted to create an image to mark Mental Heath Awareness week this week and when I started to think about what story I wanted to tell, this image came to mind. Often when I'm feeling low, or anxious, or depressed, I get worried that my 'story' is written in this dark and that I won't have stories to share without those dark pieces. But then I find ways through it, I find the light wether through talking with people I trust, spending time breaking down why I feel the way I do, or spending time outside and physically working through my anxiety.
One thing that really resonates with me is the idea that we are not our thoughts, we are just observing them. I am not my anxious thoughts, or my sad ones, they're a part of me but not all of me.
Now more than ever we need to continue these conversations around mental health, to check on our friends and ask them how they are and listen carefully for the answer. I've been working with @headsupguys for over a year making sure others have a resource to turn to when they need. I recommend following us there if you are looking for support or information.

Go, lovely rose!
Tell her that wastes her time and me
That now she knows,
When I resemble her to thee,
How sweet and fair she seems to be.
Tell her that's young,
And shuns to have her graces spied,
That hadst thou sprung
In deserts, where no men abide,
Thou must have uncommended died.
Small is the worth
Of beauty from the light retired;
Bid her come forth,
Suffer herself to be desired,
And not blush so to be admired.
Then die! that she
The common fate of all things rare
May read in thee;
How small a part of time they share
That are so wondrous sweet and fair!

This is the same alligator that appeared in the background of the capture of the Tri-colored Heron. At first, I thought it was a female because a few feet down the bayou was an exceptionally large male, but it might also be a male. No way to determine when they are this size, but I do know that there’s a bit of the tail missing on this particular beast. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a male or female because when they are this size, they are lethal no matter what sex they are. This one didn’t stick around and made a banzai launch into the bayou which I failed to capture. The one thing you can count on with an alligator is that they are unpredictable. "I need a friend
And you need a home
I love when you come
I still feel alone
You make it warm in my bed
Butterflies in my head
Sun rise and it set
But you don't love me like you say you do
White lies hold the hidden truth
You keep leaving when I need you most
It's true what they say about love had and love lost
Here you are and now you're gone
I'm left alone in the same bed
I wake up in a cold sweat"
