Former New York Telephone exchange on leafy residential Neher Street, Woodstock, New York (architect and date unknown, probably 1960s). This is one of a number of exchanges camouflaged as a more familiar building type, in this case a postwar ranch house, consistent with AT&T's broad "good neighbor" architectural policy. The earth-tinted concrete block, the shingled faux-mansard roof, and the shutters flanking false windows all do their best to sell the illusion. The zones of vertical wood planking on the main volume strike a false note; they seem intended to break up that facade in the way that living room windows might, but why not simply carry the fake-window motif over there? Oh well - at least they nail the muted, quasi-rustic color palette.
