Communication breakdown

Line went dead a couple of days ago. What caused it? Is it the switch? the router? the cat5 cable? the modem? the line filter? phone connection switches? the line connecting to the telephone line?

So the phone company, a fault logged and the line technician comes. Firstly the problem is checked at the exchange.

But the problem is closer to home. Is it outside at the junction? inside the house? No it's outside. Here's the sucker. Coms are down because a 1c piece of wire has burnt out.

For most of its assets, small businesses follow a robust business model wherein they invest only in the most important assets. They may not necessarily invest in best of breed assets but instead they invest in assets, which are good enough for their business for the time being.

To further ensure the success of their new SIP gateway and SIP services, Tpad has invested a lot of time and money on the new technology. It has partnered with several leading industry players to ensure that their products and services will be of the best quality. For their Internet connection, Tpad teams up with leading service provider Supanet. Currently, the company’s SIP dialer software offers an Internet connection speed of 100Mbps to ensure the quality of all calls made as well as support for up to 3000 active calls. For their softphone SIP gateway, Tpad has also partnered with Global IP Telecommunications. On top of that, Tpad also worked with a number of research centres and universities to carry out a demonstration of how their new SIP gateway services can really improve communications efficiency and lower costs.

Situated opposite the Secession building, the Cafe Museum was designed by the architect Adolf Loos. Built at a time when telephony was negating the distance between people, this example of early modernism was an attempt to restore face-to-face communication. In its day, it became a hotbed of political, philosophical and artistic dissent, frequented by the likes of Klimt and Freud. It fell off the radar until recently when some crowd came along and restored the café's former glory on a B&Q budget.

The two pairs continue for just two more spans, then it's gone. Three more poles with no cross arms remain, you can see them making a turn to the north. Just barely visible on the horizon, a bit to the left of the near pole, you can see the road that after 19 miles leads to the former site of the famous Mojave phone booth, gone since 2000. Click on the high-res for a better view of that. Seems reasonable to assume one of these pairs probably served the phone booth, but of course I'm just guessing.

The city was the capital of Brazil for nearly two centuries, from 1763 to 1815 during the Portuguese colonial era, 1815 to 1821 as the capital of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves, and from 1822 to 1960 as an independent nation. Rio is nicknamed the Cidade Maravilhosa or "Marvelous City."

Rio de Janeiro represents the second largest GDP in the country [5] (and 30th largest in the world [6]), estimated at about 140 billion reais (IBGE/2007), and is the headquarters of two major Brazilian companies – Petrobras and Vale, and major oil companies and telephony in Brazil, besides the largest conglomerate of media and communications companies in Latin America, the Globo Organizations. The home of many universities and institutes, it is the second largest center of research and development in Brazil, accounting for 17% of national scientific production – according to 2005 data.[7]

Rio de Janeiro is the most visited city in the southern hemisphere and is known for its natural settings, carnival celebrations, samba, Bossa Nova, balneario beaches[8] such as Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. Some of the most famous landmarks in addition to the beaches include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer ('Cristo Redentor') atop Corcovado mountain, named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; Sugarloaf mountain (Pão de Açúcar) with its cable car; the Sambódromo, a permanent grandstand-lined parade avenue which is used during Carnival; and Maracanã stadium, one of the world's largest football stadiums.

Abilene, Kansas, was the original home of C.W. Parker Amusements. Parker manufactured merry go rounds, amusement park rides, and other equipment. He would become the nation's largest manufacturer of carnival and amusement devices. The 1901 carousel shown in this photo is on display at the Heritage Center of Dickinson County & Museum of Independent Telephony. The carousel toured the country with Parker's traveling carnivals until it was sold in 1928. The carousel would continue to travel until 1959 when it was sold to a drive in theatre operator in Riverton, Wyoming. The carousel returned to Abilene in 1976 after residents raised $8,900 to purchase it. The carousel consists of 24 horses in 12 pairs and four chariots. The carousel was named a National Landmark in 1987. Abilene is also the boyhood home of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

After decades of growth landline revenues continue to fall and some are ready to pronounce the telecoms as a “boring utility”, if not scribe the industry’s tombstone. But innovations in mobile telephony, the advent of cloud computing, media convergence, as well as emerging market growth hold promise for some.

1) How are telecom companies adjusting their strategies to meet new areas of demand? Is there enough new growth in mobile and other areas to make up for shortfalls in landline usage?

2) Who are best positioned to capitalize from new growth strategies? How will cloud computing and other innovations impact the industry?

3) How are non-telecom businesses able to capitalize on the changes in the telephony environment?

Business trips to Greece for system installation and customer support.

T24, a mobile service brand of Tata Teleservices and Future Group, has now expanded its services in Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab.

T24 offers free talk time on shopping in Future Bazaar retail outlets such as Big Bazaar, Pantaloons, Food Bazaar, Pantaloons, Central, Brand Factory, Home Town, eZone and Aadhar, among others. It also offers discount vouchers to those buying talktime.

With this, the brand has reached 17 circles including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh was the first telecom circle to get the services in June 2010.

"T24 has received tremendous response since its launch in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Shopping, and talking on our mobile phones are among the two favorite activities for all of us in India," said Mayur Toshniwal, chief executive officer of T24.

"With T24, we have been able to develop a unique customer value proposition that combines these interests of the aspirational Indian. Customers will get shopping benefits on talking and talk-time benefits every time they shop," Toshniwal added.

T24 tariff plans are similar to those that Tata Docomo and Indicom offer. In addition, customers get rewarded free talk time for every purchase above Rs 350 made at any Future Group shopping outlet.

For example, a T24 customer buying products worth Rs 3,001 at Pantaloons or Central gets Rs 150 worth of free talk time. And a customer spending Rs 2,001 at Big Bazaar gets Rs 84 worth of free talk time.

According to the company, "T24 mobile telephony service will be progressively rolled out across the country in next few months, through Future Group's retail networks in over 76 cities and 65 rural destinations."

Customers can recharge their T24 mobile at these stores and also at any Tata Docomo retailer. Future Group retail chains attracted over 250 million customer footfalls in 2009-10.

The service has so far not been started in Delhi where Future Group has a sizeable presence as Tata Docomo doesn't have spectrum for the circle yet, and the company probably doesn't want to start service using its CDMA network.

This is wat i was talking about "Table"

Nikola Tesla (1856 – 1943) was a Serbian American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, physicist, and futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.

Tesla gained experience in telephony and electrical engineering before immigrating to the United States in 1884 to work for Thomas Edison in New York City. He soon struck out on his own with financial backers, setting up laboratories and companies to develop a range of electrical devices. His patented AC induction motor and transformer were licensed by George Westinghouse, who also hired Tesla for a short time as a consultant. His work in the formative years of electric power development was involved in a corporate alternating current/direct current "War of Currents" as well as various patent battles.

Tesla went on to pursue his ideas of wireless lighting and electricity distribution in his high-voltage, high-frequency power experiments in New York and Colorado Springs, and made early (1893) pronouncements on the possibility of wireless communication with his devices. He tried to put these ideas to practical use in his ill-fated attempt at intercontinental wireless transmission, which was his unfinished Wardenclyffe Tower project. In his lab he also conducted a range of experiments with mechanical oscillators/generators, electrical discharge tubes, and early X-ray imaging. He also built a wireless controlled boat, one of the first ever exhibited.

Tesla was renowned for his achievements and showmanship, eventually earning him a reputation in popular culture as an archetypal "mad scientist". His patents earned him a considerable amount of money, much of which was used to finance his own projects with varying degrees of success. He lived most of his life in a series of New York hotels, through his retirement. He died on 7 January 1943. His work fell into relative obscurity after his death, but in 1960 the General Conference on Weights and Measures named the SI unit of magnetic flux density the tesla in his honor. Tesla has experienced a resurgence in interest in popular culture since the 1990s. [Source: Wikipedia]

That the real innovation in mobile telephony lies not in the eagerly anticipated latest iPhone models but rather in mini-factories in the Chinese hi-tech hub, Shenzhen (where iPhones too are produced), is amply demonstrated by the group DISNOVATION.ORG.

In collaboration with researcher Clément Renaud and Hongyuan Qu, the artists Nicolas Maigret and Maria Roszkowska collected strikingly designed mobile phones in Shenzhen, which took such fantastic forms as strawberries or cars, or had impressive technological features. The Powerbank phone, for instance, runs up to three SIM cards in parallel and has an integrated battery that can charge other devices. Others have an in-built lighter or electric razor. This market is geared not so much to the Western middle-classes as to the rural populations of Africa or inland China. Set up as a typical sales stand, 'Shanzhai Archeology' presents the product range of these mini-companies, which fuse creativity, copy/piracy/remix-ventures and self-taught skills to develop new products in a matter of weeks. However, Shanzhai (Chinese: pirate) culture is under threat - not so much from miserable working conditions as from the Chinese government's endeavours to clean up the country's counterfeiter reputation. Yet, although often dissed for poor quality, the devices on show here, given their extraordinary qualities and style, pose a serious challenge to the West's hyper-standardised approach to technology and to the built-in obsolescence paraded under the guise of innovation.

Note also the telegraph poles, vital in transporting all the tele-communications services that the railway required to keep it running. This would not only allow voice telephony between stations and signal cabins, but also operated the various block sections.

As we've seen, New York's emergency call boxes come in many different forms. This is the shell of an old Gamewell (check out the awesome logo) telegraphic fire alarm box with a modern telephonic fire/police button unit installed inside it. Gamewell was the dominant manufacturer of fire call boxes in the US, but this is the first Gamewell box I've noticed in NYC — within the city, they're apparently only found in a few neighborhoods in Queens.

The cylindrical thing mounted on top of the box is a mechanical Arrestolarm, which would have blasted a "loud and distinctive warning shriek" whenever the box was triggered. This was intended to discourage pranksters from setting off false alarms by drawing immediate attention to anyone reporting a fire.
