Departamento del Ejército selecciona Loiceño como Sargento de mayor rango en la isla y el Caribe
Fort Buchanan, PR – El Departamento de la Reserva del Ejército de Estados Unidos ha anunciado la selección de René Rivera Casanova, como Sargento Mayor de Comando en servicio activo para Puerto Rico y el Caribe.
Ser seleccionado Sargento Mayor de Comando a nivel de división no es tarea fácil. Actualmente sólo existen 84 posiciones de Sargento Mayor de Comando a nivel de división, en toda la Reserva. Estas posiciones son llenadas por nominación, luego de un proceso de alto escrutinio y selección. Rivera Casanova ocupa una de esas 84 posiciones, al ser seleccionado como el Sargento Mayor de Comando del Primer Comando de Apoyo a la Misión.
La historia personal de Rivera Casanova es una de superación. El militar se crió en el Barrio Medianía Alta, parcelas Vieques de Loiza. Allí pasaba sus años de juventud pescando en la playa, tumbando cocos y vendiéndolos para poder tener algún dinero. “Mi papa cortaba caña para poder mantener a la familia. El siempre me decía que yo tenía que llegar más lejos que él”.
Rivera Casanova indica que vio al ejército como una forma de progresar y aprender inglés. “Compre un librito de inglés básico en la farmacia del pueblo y así estudiaba todos los días para poder pasar el examen del ejército”, indicó.
“El 29 de mayo del 1981 me gradué de la escuela Superior Carlos Escobar López de Loiza. El 3 de junio del mismo año ya estaba en un avión para ir al entrenamiento básico del ejército, sin saber ni una gota inglés. Nunca había salido de Loiza”, dijo el nuevo Sargento Mayor del Primer Comando de Apoyo a la Misión.
“A los jóvenes de las barriadas pobres de Puerto Rico les digo que se puede progresar. Yo se que a veces uno puede pensar que no hay salida y que hay que conformarse con lo que hay, pero no, yo les digo que si la persona tiene el deseo genuino, hay manera de progresar y romper el ciclo de pobreza”, indico Rivera quien ahora representa los intereses de todos los Soldados reservistas en la isla y el Caribe.
“Ahora tengo la oportunidad de impactar la vida de todos los soldados puertorriqueños. Quiero hacer los cambios necesarios para mejorar el comando de la reserva en Puerto Rico para el bienestar de todos. Quién sabe, tal vez pueda algún día convertirme el primer puertorriqueño en ser el Sargento Mayor de Comando de todos los Estados Unidos”, dijo la también mano derecha del comandante del Primer Comando de Apoyo a la Misión, General de Brigada Fernando Fernández.
