This is down the road from where I live.

Mis en service à partir de 1794, le télégraphe de Claude Chappe fut pendant 50 ans l'instrument de transmission le plus rapide des messages du gouvernement (Paris à Lyon, dans de bonnes conditions, moins de 40 mn).

Les signaux d'un code secret étaient transmis d'une station à l'autre aux moyens de vastes bras mobiles visibles avec une lunette à plus de 10 kms.

535 relais furent répartis sur l'ensemble du territoire français.

La tour de Sainte Foy lès Lyon bien conservée est l'un des rares témoignages de ce passé des télécommunications.

Vancouver Island North, British Columbia, Canada

Named such because of the telegraph poles had been cut from trees in the area during the 1850s. This building, built around 1890-1900 was basically the only "town" building, which served as a general store, post office, and residence (of the postmaster). In operation until 2009.
