Sketch No. 3.
The Liverpool Street project called for three jointing chambers and as the conduits were laid in the roadway it was necessary to construct the required chambers in the roadway. This required a much more robust structure and necessitated entry considerations not usually encountered in Telecom, This sketch is a pictorial representation of one of the chambers being built in Liverpool Street. The excavation to accommodate such a chamber is large (approximately 10 metres long by 9 metres deep by 3 metres wide). The “Mini” car and the cable jointer shown in this illustration have been drawn in general proportion to the jointing chamber. Two entry shafts can be seen in the sketch, and it will be noted that they are built to provide access to the chamber from the footway. This is an essential safety requirement for the staff working in the chamber and it has the added advantage that vehicular traffic is not impeded while staff are working in the chamber. The two circular shafts that come to the surface in the roadway are provided for cable hauling purposes. That exercise is a relatively quick one and overall is carried out at infrequent intervals, thus any resultant traffic problems are minor.
