Walking in the woods today I came across this scene. I have no idea who has left this pumpkin, but I had to take a photo.

View of the Basset Monument on Carn Brea, near Camborne, Cornwall.

This is a a 90 foot high granite obelisk erected in 1836 in memory of Francis Bassett, Lord de Dunstaville.

The Bassetts were the most important mining family in the area and had lived in nearby Tehidy for over 700 years. Francis Bassett was however the first to be elevated to the nobility due to his efforts to raise an army of miners to defend the port of Plymouth from the combined Spanish and French fleets.

A beautiful autumn afternoon. A walk on the beach at Portreath after visiting Tehidy woods to feed the ducks and swans :)

I have been trying to upload to Flickr for a couple of hours. Also unable to comment. I am Flickr exhausted so will catch up later!

If the interior is as inviting as the exterior, then this must be an amazing residence.

These beautiful birds are also very people friendly and can be hand fed. When they are not busy preening.

At Tehidy Country Park in Cornwall. Not a crow as you might think at first glance, but a juvenile rook.

Whilst out taking photos of wildlife this scene took my attention. I thought the contrast with the bright colour added a lot to the scene.

Well a view from the car park at Portreath is about as close as I get to a beach as a rule . This is only a part of the beach here which to the right comes to an end at the harbour access wall .

Portreath's history is primarily from the 18th century when it was an important port for the shipping of copper ore from the mines of the Camborne - Redruth area. In its heyday in the 19th century, over 100,000 tons of copper ore passed through Portreath bound for destinations around the world. Until the mid 1700s, the ore was loaded onto ships from the beach and it was only after the building of the quay by Francis Basset that the port had the luxury of being able to load the ships in a safer fashion.

A tramroad was opened in 1812 to carry the ore from mines in the Poldice area of St Day. The terminus of the Portreath Tramroad opened in 1819 at Crofthandy and provided the storage point for coal brought from Portreath harbour, bound for the mines and the precious cargo of copper ore while it waited to be transported to Portreath. The tramroad of 7 miles was used for around 50 years.

Portreath is also known as Bassetts Cove due to its association with the famous mining family who resided at nearby Tehidy.

In January 2016, after a powerful storm, the remains of a petrified forest, were uncovered on the beach. The tree stumps emerge every few years and are believed to be between 4,000 and 6,000 years old.

It is thought that the forest was growing during the Neolithic period but it became submerged when sea levels rose around the Cornish coast.

Today, the village welcomes visitors who come to enjoy the natural environment, whether beach goers, watersports enthusiasts or cyclists and walkers who wish to follow the historical Coast to Coast Trail which joins the villages of Portreath on the North coast with Devoran on the South or the Portreath Branchline Trail which connects Portreath with the former busy centre of inland mines between Redruth and Camborne.

ð Tehidy Woodsð¦

The morning started with a walk around Tehidy Woods looking for autumnal scenes. Without the presence of mist or inclement weather, there just wasn't the atmosphere in the scenes I always hope for.

So, inspired by talking to a bird photographer while on my walk, I switched to my 150-600mm lens and searched for some wildlife. With such an abundance of wildlife around the ponds, I decided to look for the more elusive critters rather than shooting everything I saw.

My first shot was of a water vole... at 150mm. Not because I was close to it, but because I had left my lens lock on! Before long I had spotted this Grey Heron. While they are common in the UK, they don't like humans getting too close, which for me, makes taking a reasonable photo of one more rewarding!

An autumnal photo taken on my first visit to Tehidy Woods.

It's been a few weeks since this little wander around the woods near Camborne & Redruth, so my memory of it is a little hazy. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't! A gloomy overcast with very little mist didn't provide much atmosphere.

I attempted a a few compositions, but this shot in a corner of deciduous woodland was my favourite.

A walk today in Tehidy Woods to feed the squirrels, ducks, swans, cormorants and the opportunist sea gulls!

The grey squirrel was introduced into the UK in the 1800s. It provides an easy encounter with wildlife for many people, but can be damaging to woodlands and has contributed to the decline of the red squirrel.

The squirrels at Tehidy Woods are very tame and definitely not people shy.

Grey Squirrel - Taken at Tehidy Country Park. There were dozens of squirrels about and they were all very friendly and would come very close.

Sciurus carolinensis, common name eastern gray squirrel or grey squirrel depending on region, is a tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus. It is native to North America but now also inhabits other regions.

Tehidy Country Park is located on the west coast of Cornwall, England, UK, about 2 miles north of Camborne, 2 miles west of Redruth, and about 1 mile south of the small harbour of Portreath. It was once part of an ancient manor owned by the Basset family which later gained much wealth from local tin mining.

Covering 250 acres (1.0 km2), the estate was purchased by Cornwall County Council in 1983. It is one of four Country Parks in Cornwall.
