"The fall of Daedalus and Icarus", Rolf Scholz, 1985, at Berlin Tegel Airport. The sculpture is a reminder of Otto Lilienthal and his accident with his flying device. It has been moved to the new BER-Airport in 2020.

Otto Lilienthal is probably the most important pioneer in aviation history and is considered the first person to ever take to the skies in an aircraft. In 1891, the spectacular 25-metre-wide glide was achieved from a hill near Berlin.

His flying machines, as the gliding planes were somewhat awkwardly called at the time, can still be admired in the most important aviation and technology museums in the world.

The Wright brothers, who are known as the fathers of powered flight, only managed to hop in the sand dunes near Kitty Hawk in the state of Ohio in 1903 thanks to Lilienthal's years of preparatory work and intensive aerodynamic studies.

On August 9, 1896, Lilienthal fell from a height of 15 meters on Gollenberg near Stölln and injured himself so badly that he died a day later in the Berlin University Hospital.

Once Forst (Lausitz) was called the Manchester of Germany. The privileged cloth maker craft and the city of Forst (Lausitz) look back on a long common and succesful history. Starting in 1700 the textile guild numbered 50 master of the cloth making craft in Forst. With the manufacturing of the heavy but inexpensive wool fabric Buckskin and the implementation of steam engines about 1840 the city gained significance in the textile industry far beyond the Lausitz. Nowadays visitors of the museum Brandenburgisches Textilmuseum Forst (Lausitz) can see the manufacturing of cloth according to traditional and industrial ways in the demonstration textile workshop of this site with historical but still operative machines and even try it out by themselves. The permanent exihibition of the museum in the old textile factory (1897) displays particularly the history of cloth making craft and the closely linked history of the city of Forst (coming soon). The museum offers moreover a comprehensive programm of museum education about the process of textile manufacturing.
