Training farmers on optimal methods for manufacturing organic pesticides by extracting active substances from plants that are widespread in our environment, which experiments have proven to be resistant to pests and effective in combating them. This activity is part of the Climate Change Initiative (CLI), which provides technical support, including mentorship services to farmers, to promote regenerative farming practices and co-create interventions for mitigation and adaptation. These interventions include renewable energy, biodiversity promotion, sustainable water management, forest regeneration, solar irrigation linked to livestock, a drip system for crops, and water reuse and rainwater harvesting to maximize efficiency. As part of the Climate Change Initiative (CLI) and Climate Resilience (CR) efforts led by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), and within the framework of sustainable agriculture and water resource management in Tartous, an activity was implemented on July 20, 2025, targeting farmer groups through the provision of HDPE geomembrane sheets. These were used to support the implementation of rainwater harvesting systems and irrigation infrastructure for trees and vegetables, utilizing techniques such as half-moon structures, terraces (contours), reservoirs, and excavation methods. The initiative aimed to promote climate-adaptive agriculture, regenerative farming, and efficient water use while enhancing community-based farming practices. Concurrently, in support of emergency response efforts in Lattakia Governorate, 10,000 liters of fuel were supplied to operate firefighting vehicles, along with 20 sleeping mattresses provided as part of logistical support to emergency units responding to forest fires. This activity forms part of the Emergency Management (EM) unit's broader interventions, which aim to strengthen communities' preparedness, response, and resilience in emergencies. All activities are fully funded and implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF).

This activity emphasized the benefits of organic fertilizers such as vermicompost and manure over inorganic alternatives like NPK blends, highlighting their role in improving soil structure, enhancing water retention, promoting beneficial microbial activity, and providing a slow, steady nutrient supply while reducing nutrient leaching risks. Farmers received training on producing and applying various organic fertilizers, especially worm compost, to support sustainable agriculture and improve soil health for greenhouse crops. This intervention aligns with CLI’s broader goal of offering technical support and mentorship to promote regenerative farming practices, including renewable energy use, biodiversity enhancement, sustainable water management, forest regeneration, solar irrigation linked to livestock, drip irrigation systems for crops, and maximizing efficiency through water reuse and rainwater harvesting. On 5 May 2025, a training activity was conducted in Salamieh, Hama, as part of the Climate Change Initiative (CLI), aimed at forming an early warning and agricultural emergency response team composed of 30 farmers and agricultural engineers. This initiative, funded and implemented by AKF, focused on equipping participants with the skills to build and manage a comprehensive database of climate and agricultural information using agricultural technologies. The activity included the establishment of an early warning system for weather and agricultural pests, risk forecasting related to climate change, pest outbreaks, water salinity, and water management, and the issuance of operational recommendations aligned with evolving agricultural challenges. In addition, the team will conduct field campaigns and agricultural tours to carry out essential tasks—such as pruning, grafting, pest control, and the implementation of irrigation systems—based on sound agricultural principles. This training forms part of the broader CLI project, which provides technical support and mentorship to farmers, and promotes regenerative agricultural practices, including interventions for climate mitigation and adaptation through renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, sustainable water use, forest regeneration, solar-powered irrigation systems for livestock and crops, drip irrigation, water reuse, and rainwater harvesting to enhance overall efficiency.

The training aimed to enhance olive production through a comprehensive, integrated approach over five years, with specific goals to increase yield, improve the quality of olive oil, and ensure sustainable practices, while also working to enhance farmers’ standard of living and income. To achieve this, the field training focused on teaching farmers how to graft olive trees using good, drought-tolerant, more productive, and pest- and disease-resistant varieties. Through this activity, farmers were equipped with essential skills to adopt a sustainable approach to olive production. On 20 May 2025, a collaborative group of nine farmers in Taldara Village, Salamieh, formed a non-profit community nursery dedicated to the production of fruit and forest tree seedlings. This initiative arose from the group’s recognition that their village lacked a nursery supplying local plants for cultivation. Their motivation was not profit-driven but focused on revitalizing the land and educating future generations that investing in the land equates to investing in the future. With the support of AKF, the group successfully increased their production and sales to 50,000 seedlings.
