Indian equity markets traded on a strong note on Wednesday with the Nifty trading firm above the psychological 8,400 mark.The Sensex surged more than 200 points supported by buying in IT and banking shares. Equity benchmarks fell sharply in opening trade, with the Sensex losing more than 300 points and the Nifty trading near 9,700 level.The 30-share #BSE #Sensex was down 287.79 points or 0.91 percent at 31,243.54 and the 50-share #NSE #Nifty dropped 93.55 points or 0.95 percent at 9,726.70. Power Grid, Tech Mahindra and Wipro were only gainers among Nifty stocks.

Opening Bell : Equity benchmarks recovered early losses with the Nifty rising over 8600 level on first day of November series. Select Tata Group stocks like Tata Motors (up 2.6 percent) and Tata Steel (up 1.7 percent) rebounded sharply on short covering after sharp sell-off in previous three consecutive sessions due to Tata-Mistry issue. The 30-share BSE Sensex was down 17.84 points at 27898.06 and the 50-share NSE Nifty gained 7.65 points at 8622.90 while the broader markets outperformed benchmarks. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices gained nearly 1 percent each on strong breadth. About two shares advanced for every shares declining on the exchange. Tech Mahindra maintained its rally of 6 percent after strong dollar revenue growth of 5 percent QoQ in constant currency.
Closing Bell : Benchmark indices ended the session on a positive note, with indices witnessing a surge in the last hour of trade. The Street had witnessed tight rangebound movement through the day and ended on record high note. The Sensex closed up 55.66 points at 30638.26, while the Nifty ended 5.75 points higher at 9518.00. The market breadth, however, was negative as 1,252 shares advanced against a decline of 1,540 shares, while 182 shares were unchanged. Tata Steel, Tata Motors, and Bharti Infratel gained the most, while Adani Ports, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and ACC fell the most.
