The "fireproof" Winecoff Hotel opened at Peachtree and Ellis Streets in downtown Atlanta in 1913 -- at 16 stories, it was then the tallest hotel in the city.
On December 7, 1946, it burned, killing 119 people. It's stood empty ever since.
Georgia Tech student Arnold Hardy took a famous photo of a woman jumping from the hotel; it won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize, making Hardy the first amateur photographer to do so.
And the Winecoff fire was instrumental in spurring the nationwide adoption of fire codes, fire escapes, and sprinkler systems in hotels.
