This is my side of our home office (best viewed - large).... Almost exactly five years ago I took another photo of what my desk looked like and what kinds of technology I was using at home. Well it's been five years and I just retired most of what I was using... now I'm an Apple convert and my home setup is much simpler (it's amazing the cabling that was pulled out, and how quiet things are... will be interesting to see if the power bill drops).

Click Here to see a close up version of what's on my desk.

Basically I have two computers, a desktop, laptop and a third machine functioning as a storage server. They are networked together by an HP ProCurve 8 port gigabit ethernet switch, with a Linksys WRT54GS running Tomato and functioning as a dedicated firewall and router and an Airport Extreme serving up wireless internet access.

This is just a fantastic setup for doing just about any photographic related computer task one could think of... It's wonderful to edit with this hardware and setup. Aside from the Mac Pro which is lighting fast, the real treat is seeing images on the amazingly accurate and sharp 30" NEC display, this monitor is quite a bit above and beyond the Apple Cinema Display (as well as the Dell and HP offerings).

On Switching to Mac: I've been a Microsoft user since MS-DOS 3.3 and have worked professionally as a server engineer and systems designer for Microsoft Servers for approx. 15 years, and Microsoft has come a long way... some of their newest offerings are darn impressive. But the reality is for me, at home... I want something that is simple, powerful and is best geared for photography. Additionally I wanted something that was simpler and doesn't result in me having to rebuild the system once a year or so because of something silly happening.

I've been half switched for a bit more than three months and so far it's been fantastic... there is a bit of a learning curve and somethings are kind of annoying, but overall it's been wonderful and the most enjoyable computing experience of my life. Besides, if I really need to run Windows I have Windows 7 Ultimate running in side a VMWare virtual machine.

APC SmartUPS 1400 UPS Power Backup

HumanScale 4G Ergonomic Keyboard Tray (designed to fit the Microsoft Natural Keyboards)

Herman Miller Mirra Office Chair (out of frame)

What's Next:

Next year I plan to add a few more things to the mix... including

Data Expansion - Adding a OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 quad bay external drive array with four 3TB Hard Drives. Will be used for data backup.

Second Monitor - Will be adding either a 22" or 24" secondary NEC monitor, which will make layout and album design work a bit nicer.

Software: I want to point out that 100% of the software that is run on these systems has been paid for and is all legal like. This wasn't always the case but I do like knowing that it's all legit ... I think it's highly hypocritical for photographers or other content creators to complain about someone stealing their images or using images without their permission if they use pirated or not properly licensed software.

Active Assignment Weekly for 4th - 11th January: Pimp my 'Puter

Pimp my 'Puter is a successful chain of computer super stores. We are opening a new store in a retail park on the outskirts of your town early in the new year. We sell everything related to computers, including electronic components, circuit boards, processors, mice, keyboards, computer tables, office chairs, software, CDs, and even cases with neon go-faster stripes for the gamerzz.

We need pictures of our products for the glossy catalogue that will be distributed to all households in the area. Your task is to make one of these pictures. You chose the product, but your picture must show the item as being desireable and must make the heart of any geek race faster than a water-cooled terraflops GPU.

Feel free to use as much or little post processing as your heart desire.

Restriction: None

Dare: Turn the picture into a humourous ad

WIT: Balanced my Leatherman Multitool on a black foamcore and positioned it near a window for lighting. Took a separate photo of a flash drive to get the same lighting. In PSE, I cloned out the file and added in the flash drive and text.

Slipjoint knife collection: Great Eastern Cutlery Bullnose, Northwoods Forest Jack, K'roo Knives Lanny's Clip, Trestle Pine Superior, K'roo Chunky Frank, Northwoods Bullet Jack, GEC Pemberton, Northwoods Madison Barlow, Boker Tech-Tool, Boker Anso Cox Slim

When searching on Amazon.com for a book, it is nice to have an easy way to check to see if your local library has a book. This greasemonkey script adds the Chelmsford Library's logo and a text link to every Amazon book details page, which automatically launches a search in the MVLC catalog for that book's ISBN.

This was a surprise gift I got for doing a keynote in 2009 for Scottsdale Community College's TechTools event (I think that was the first time I did the CoolIris trick).

When Pat told me they would be mailing a gift, I smiled and thought to myself, "yeah, a set of Maricopa coasters."

Boy was I surprised to open a big box and find a set of Harman Kardon Sound Sticks! They are my main speaker system in the house; I have my old laptop set up with airtunes to stream music to it via an airport express, and I also can switch it to be the speakers for my DVD player.

Alas, those are the old days, before the sticklers clamped down on all the good stuff. Now I bet its all coasters all the time.

Speakers for speaking? oh yeah

When a search in the MVLC catalog yields no results, that is often the end of the search. This greasemonkey script adds to the "No Results" page a login box for the statewide virtual catalog, and also an form to email a Chelmsford Librarian for help.

Apple 12” Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM, with wi-fi, combo drive and in superb condition!

This is an Apple Powerbook G4 laptop; it is the last generation Powerbook in the ultra portable 12” line. This is still the smallest Apple laptop available, in terms of length and width (the Macbook Air is obviously the thinnest laptop). The PowerPc processors are well known for their stability and reliability.

I have taken very, very good care of this laptop and it clearly shows. It’s in outstanding condition cosmetically, you would have a hard time finding one this nice shirt of getting “new old stock” and I have no idea where you would even find one.

This little guy packs big power with a 1.5 GHz processor and upgraded 1.25 GB of RAM, has a 60GB SATA hard drive, combo drive and of course airport wireless. In the included pictures you can see the specs in “about this mac” window. If you need more pictures, please send me an email, or come see it. It will come with OSX Tiger installed; you will get the installation software.

I have run all of the Techtool diagnostics and everything is perfect running order. No problems, works like a champ. This was my tool of choice for traveling, as it is so small, but has enough power running all my graphics programs.

The only reason I’m selling it is because I'm moving obviously and I need to downsize, I currently have 2 laptops and I foresee this not being used much at all.

You can see complete specs for the last generation 12” PowerBook at everymac:

www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/stats/powerbo...

The only “negative” thing I can note about this laptop is that the battery has cycles on it; this is a 3 year-old machine after all. So, you might want to replace it depending on what you plan on using it for. If you plan on using it in locations with no AC source for extended periods of time, I would suggest getting a new battery. However, I’ve never really had a problem with this. To offset this, there is an additional power supply I’ll include in the auction. I kept one at the office and home for convenience; this is a $50+ value. You will also get a RadTech sleeve, and a screen protector. This is another $50 value. They are wonderful because they protect the screen from the keyboard when closed, and the outside from cosmetic wear.

Looking for $550.

And end of the roll: with my table still relatively orderly, I perform a maintenance check on my Powerbook. Lots of other clutter on my workplace which you can identify ;)
