Attracted to light in my Dorset garden recently.

Sitting in my garden amongst the delicate flowers of Germander speedwell.

Purple Thorn. Always like to find these in my moth trap. They remind me of sailing ships. This was a May visitor. Hunmanby, North Yorkshire.

35 of these beautiful little moths arrived to my moth light in Dorset yesterday, smashing my previous record of 13.

My arm was an excellent place for this moth to warm up, before leaving.

Small Magpie a moth that I often see by day. It is also attracted to lights at night. Fairly common throughout the uk in lots of different habitats.

North Antrim, June 2023. Another scarce moth, which the local woods are home to.

My first encounter with the ‘Wonder of the day’. Attracted to light in my Dorset garden.

North Antrim - May 2023. This species is much less common than the similar Lesser Swallow Prominent in Ireland. I only get one or two a year up here, so it was a pleasant surprise to get one in the garden recently.

A new moth for the year, and it's a lovely one! This is a male, one of two in the moth-trap this morning. Females are paler, almost transparent, compared to the male.

Better on black

Apparently Emperor Moths are like London buses, and only days after finding my first, I happened upon this male on Brentmoor Heath.

Fear it!

Well if you happen to be an apple tree at least. This Apple Tree Skeletoniser (what a name) was on my ever productive echinops. Been packed with all sorts of insects recently.

Not a spectacular moth by any means, but cute in it's own way!

She may be ragged, but this wasa a beautiful sight for me today, my first ever Emperor Moth. She was clinging on to a grass stalk for dear life as the wind had picked up across Chobham Common, and the temperature had dropped.

Still a bit nippy overnight at the moment. This species has to wear extra warm leggings to get through....

Danbo begins his training in flying Hawks!

Last night's moth trap was much better in terms of numbers, 25 moths in total. Some un-forecasted rain made everything a little damp first thing, but at least that gave me some nice bokeh for this Pale Tussock! Not a new one, but the only decent sized macro in the trap.

New for the garden, and a very easily recognisable moth in the spring brood colours. There will be a second brood later in the summer.

This species is an amazing example of camouflage. From all angles this moth is able to hide in plain sight masquerading as a broken twig. Multiple shot stack in Zerene Stacker

I've been waiting for years for one of these, so please excuse me posting a few pictures. I may not see another for a while!!!

It's yet another Common Quaker in the mothtrap….

Seeing more of these Buff-tip moths every night now. Such stunning moths

My night-time exploits with the UV light have a beneficial impact on my friendly neighbourhood spiders. Sorry moth….
