Snap shot of incoming Teal. Taken in Oxfordshire

Eurasian Teal male WWT Slimbridge

Teal - Anas crecca

Common and pretty dabbling ducks, teal gather in large numbers in winter on flooded gravel pits, reservoirs and floodplain meadows. Many of these birds are migrants from the cold climes of the Baltic and Siberia. In summer, teal breed in small numbers in the UK, mostly in the north.

The teal is our smallest duck. Males are grey, with a speckled breast, a yellow-and-black tail, a chestnut-coloured head and a bright green eye patch. Females are mainly mottled brown, but both sexes show a bright green wing patch in flight.

Nests in small numbers around the country, particularly in the uplands, but much more common in winter when it can be found on most wetlands.

Did you know?

Collectively, a group of teal is known as a 'spring' because of the way they can take-off suddenly and vertically, as if they have jumped straight off the ground!

This handsome pair of Blue-winged Teal was seen at Celery Fields, Sarasota County, Florida

A pair of Blue Wing Teals taking off up into the morning light as I stepped on a twig,

A pair of Blue Teals gliding through the Everglades. These beautiful ducks are found throughout the states and spend their winters in the south. This was taken from about 200 yards.

I believe this is possibly a mix of Teals! Baikal and Eurasian. I’m sure someone will know. Abberton reservoir.

When the Cinnamon Teal joined a flock of Blue-winged Teals, he must have thought he was among friends, but the other teals had different ideas. They avoided him, and in some instances, he was attacked by the male Blue-winged Teals.

Why the mobbing of the Cinnamon Teal? He "doesn't belong" at Florida's Merritt Island NWR. In fact, he is out of his element in Florida. Cinnamon Teals are found in the western half of the United States, rarely seen in Florida (if at all).

Paul (D-200 Paul) and I watched for quite awhile with the ducks in open view, but we could not get a closer look. (for a closer look, please see the first comment below for a pair of Cinnamon Teals at home in Colorado).

Most of the over-wintering ducks had left Florida by late February, but there were still a few scattered pairs of Blue-winged Teal and Northern Shovelers at Merritt Island NWR.

Blue Wing Teals take flight - pure fear of the click of a Canon!

I think this gorgeous duck is a Teal?

Teal at a sunny but very cold Frampton Marsh.

this is the eighth or ninth photo in the sequence and the teal is quite a bit higher than the previous three photos. Velvety bokeh is the result of the trees being 25 yards away from the bank of the pond
