Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction.
--Antoine de Saint Exupéry--
A warrior unlike any…
She has built an army one by one
For every act she survived and endured…
A new soldier was born
They have one war to win…Her freedom
Back from the ashes of the oppressed
The dark sky opens to reveal
Her resurrection…
Unbeknownst, her enemy taught her how to win
He will not fear, nor stand guard
For her mask is most deceitful…
The beauty,
The innocence,
The naivete…
That imprisoned her, is what will liberate her
The enemy will not know who the quarry is…
Until the day she reveals the dagger she carries
Blinded by the reflection of her light
Off the bejewelled weapon
The enemy will die with a look of horror and surprise,
Forever frozen to his fate.

Now create four prompts on four topics on which I invite you to act completely freely. A refusal is not accepted, make an effort.
Topic 1: something I have never seen before.
it worked:

On this day 22 years ago, my life changed. Since that day, you taught me how to be a better person and more importantly, the most precious gifts in life are not materialistic but rather simply things like a touch of your hand or a soft kiss on my cheek. You taught me how to love unconditionally. My day is always brighter and my heart is always warmer when I am with you.
I look at you today and see what you do not, an incredibly talented and beautiful young lady who has endless possibilities awaiting. You have so much to give this world and I feel incredibly blessed to be your mother. You may have outgrown my lap, but my precious one, you will never outgrow my heart.
On your special day, I wish for you many things:
Make a difference in the life of others
Have the confidence and strength to overcome any obstacle
Advocate for those who can not
Do not be afraid to express your feelings,
tears are a sign of strength not weakness
Appreciate nature and the peacefulness it has to offer
Keep your glass half full
Say "thank you," "please" and "I love you"
Be true to yourself and trust your instincts
Always keep that "fire in the belly"
Choose your battles carefully
Give to others your time and attention
Spend quality time with family and friends, and most importantly,
Laugh, love and enjoy the challenges life has to offer.
These and so many more I wish for you on your special day.
Happy Birthday! I will always love you…
Mom

and thank you to everyone who has inspired me & taught so very much. This time last year I took the odd snapshot. I joined flickr to share some holiday snaps and what I saw fired me with ambition!
So thank you all for all that you have given me, not least your friendship, and I hope you've seen an improvement in my output.
I taught a small group of women today, my first workshop with adults for some time. All members of the Rufford Art Society in Nottinghamshire.
This is the central panel of one of my pieces of work which I showed as an example.
I made it in around 1990. The overall size is 0.75m x 2m and was created using a series of discharge dyeing batik processes on black discharge cotton.
Todays workshop covered this process, along with Indigo dyed batik sgraffito, Indonesian tjap printing on Chinese Habotai silk and another discharge dyeing process on pre-dyed habotai silk.
You have taught me that caring and devotion comes from within and then shared with another.
I want to share that with you ♥

Patience - Something that wildlife photography has taught me is patience. I used to get frustrated easily, especially when looking for Bobcats and move around or position myself in wrong areas. However, after experiences with various Bobcats, I have learned that silence, a low profile, and a still body are the best way to photograph this species.
It is important to remember that sometimes even when an animal is accustomed to you the photographer, there are other environmental stimuli that they are paying attention to that may startle them. When this subadult female Bobcat tensed up at the presence of a dog walking behind me, I stopped taking images and stayed very quiet to not cause any additional disturbance to her. The Nikon D850 shutter is incredibly noisy so that is something that I kept in mind. Eventually she relaxed, and I continued capturing images.
This is the closest I have ever been to a Bobcat. Many Bobcats tend to not tolerate photography at such close proximity even with a silent and sensitive approach so I treat Bobcat photography on an individual by individual basis. On the same note, I do not photograph all mammals at this proximity. I would hesitate photographing animals such as Coyotes and foxes at this range since sadly (at least in California) foxes and coyotes that allow closeups are typically fed by tourists or photographers. Being obligate carnivores, Bobcats exhibit a much safer tolerance to humans - curiosity in young individuals such as this, and indifference in older individuals that have grown accustomed to suburban environments. I encourage fellow photographers to not photograph food habituated wildlife, it is faux wildlife photography and many times the animals are euthanized at no fault of their own.

Happy 17th Birthday, Macro Mondays :)
I joined Macro Mondays on 26 September 2016, and I'm a happy member ever since. A wonderful group that has taught me new photo techniques, lures me out of my comfort zone, saves me from the Winter blues, and kept me sane during those weird, time- and endless days of the pandemic. I also admire how the moderators manage to come up with new themes every week. Thank you, MMs!
And for "Party", it's Blingbert aka Bertie again. Of course, it had to be him ;) He got all excited when he heard what MM's Birthday theme would be about. "Let me come along!", he begged, "you know I love parties! Will there be Karaoke?" "I hope not", I answered. "Don't worry, Silke", Bertie said, "you don't have to sing, I'll do it!!!" He always knows how to talk me around. Bertie got even more excited. "I will sing an aria! How about something from The Valkyrie?" "What?!? No, you won't!", I yelled. "It's a party, Bertie, parties are about people having fun together. Fun. If you sing something from The Valkyrie the party will be over before it begins." Bertie looked seriously abashed. And I felt sorry for being so harsh on him. "Come on, I know you love Classical music. So let's take the 'Classic', and add 'Rock'. How about that?" "There's something like 'Classic Rock'"? He eyed me suspiciously. So what is more "Classic" in Rock music than the archetype of all things Rock? Rock 'n' Roll, of course. And when I played the YouTube video of Wanda Jackson's "Let's Have A Party" to him, he positively turned nuts. "Yessss! That's it! Why have I never heard this before? It will be a blast! And from now on, my second name is Wanda!"
You've seen "Blingbert Wanda" before (please see the first comment). For "Party", I retried my other idea for the (artificial) "Bird" theme: Bertie in front of a spinning fidget spinner. Back then, the backdrop had been far too busy. In my first attempt, I had used the camera's in-built "Live ND" filter, and didn't like either the colours, light, or the way the motion blur looked. So this time, I used a real ND filter, a Vario ND filter. It's also somewhat of a filter overkill because I wondered if I could combine the star filter with the ND filter because party = bling. I'm happy to say it worked, and this time, I also managed to get a nice-looking motion blur of the fidget spinner.
Setup: I glued the fidget spinner to a black tile with modeling clay. Next, I put Bertie Wanda on/halfway into a small glass Christmas bauble filled with tiny, shiny confetti stars. I used modeling clay once again to fixate the bauble on a small plastic box to get the right height. At one point, I also knocked the tile over when I rotated the fidget spinner, so the tile knocked Bertie on the bauble over, and all those tiny confetti stars got tossed onto the table, onto the carpet, everywhere... The joys of macro photography ;)
Size info: Bertie Wanda is 4,5 cm long, and the entire width of the frame is about 6 cm.
HMM, Everyone!

Green's Mill, Sneinton, Nottingham - the home of George Green. About George Green, from the mills website -
"George Green was 14 years old when his father built the windmill and for most of the rest of his life George worked in the windmill. But George Green was also a brilliant mathematician and physicist. He devised new ways of doing mathematics which he used to make many discoveries about such things as electricity, magnetism, light, sound and wave motion. His mathematics – still called Green’s Theorem and Green’s function – are used today by scientists and engineers all over the world working with computers, lasers, satellite communications. Research scientists trying to understand the gravitational field of the Earth and sub-atomic particles, for example, use his mathematics.
Remarkably George Green had only 14 months at school, leaving when he was only ten years old to work in his father’s bakery and later in the windmill. In 1828 this self-taught genius published his greatest scientific work where he devised a completely new way of using mathematics to understand electricity and magnetism. Five years later he became a student at Caius College in Cambridge; he was forty years old. After taking his degree in mathematics he became a Fellow of the college where he did more research and published more scientific papers. But his health failed and heAn image of Green's Memorial in Westminster Abbey returned to Nottingham, to his partner Jane Green and their seven children. He died in 1841 at the age of only 47 years. He is buried at St Stephen’s church, almost within the shadow of his windmill.
In 1993, the bicentenary of his birth, George Green achieved the honour he so richly deserved when a memorial plaque was dedicated in Westminster Abbey."

So proud of Antonio and how far he has come since he started at the new school in September 2021. I have been trying to get him out of mainstream since he started school, he has struggled so much with fitting in, being bullied and not thriving due to him not being taught the right way for him. I have had to pull him from 2 different schools due to severe bullying and the teachers being unable to deal with it. Anyway, for his last year in secondary education, he finally got a place in a wonderful special needs school, and is doing brilliantly. Despite having a year off during lockdown he is set to do his GCSE’s and is applying for a course in ICT in college. His confidence is soaring, he is doing amazingly in his studies and most importantly he looks forward to going to school for the first time and doesn’t get bullied.
Daniel and I attended parents evening recently and we received nothing but high praise from all his teachers, and they absolutely adore him. I’m the happiest proudest Mum ever.
He will always have challenges throughout his life but he has proved he can thrive if he is in the right environment. The college he will be attending is in the same building as his school so he is already familiar and comfortable with the environment. Photo taken by my amazing boyfriend, Daniel who’s support means a ton, we both love you loads.
Due to the strength shown by Antonio, I’m now under assessment myself at the grand old age of 40 something😂, something I should have done many years ago, but wasn’t aware I may be autistic! The process will probably take a long time but it will be nice to have some clarity.
Have a wonderful weekend, dear flickr friends. ❤️😘
I taught and coached at Garrison for 37 years, and after I retired in 2015 I coached and subbed for 5 more years until Covid hit. Last Thursday was my first time on campus since then. There are many reasons that I have missed GFS, but being there in the Fall is right there at the top of the list. HTMT!

I'm beginning a class taught by Kim Klassen called "Beyond Layers" on January 16th or so...and I'm hoping to find inspiration and determination to start and complete a project to leave my children when I move to Texas. I'm planning on creating a book of images of my favorite and newly discovered scenery of Utah.
This field is just a mile or so west of where I live. I have driven past it, walked beside it (there's a trail over in the trees) for many years now and the field changes with the seasons and the light. I have time to capture it again in the spring and summer. So...I CAN do this...it's time to begin!

Portrait session for my friend Chelsea Ford. She taught herself how to play five years ago, and now are finishing up production on her band’s second album. She taught herself bass, banjo, guitar and I think she may be fiddling around on a fiddle here and there. Her band is called Chelsea Ford & The Trouble. They are bluegrass, folk, Americans roots kinda band. Cincinnati has an incredible music scene in all genres, and I’ve been lucky to photograph a good amount of them.
The years have taught me to appreciate these simple moments, far from the noise and chaos. Over time, you realize there’s no need to fight, no need to convince. You learn to let go of what no longer brings you peace, and to cherish those who remain by your side. Here, by the water, I savor this moment, the fruit of all that life has taught me. No more arguments, no more drama... Just the sweetness of simply being.

The Baal Shem Tov taught that when a piece of straw falls from a wagon loaded with straw, this event has been decreed by Heaven. Similarly, when a leaf falls from a tree, it is because Heaven has decreed that this particular leaf at this particular moment would fall upon this particular spot. Once the Baal Shem Tov showed his disciples a certain leaf as it fell to the ground and told them to pick it up. They did so and saw that a worm was underneath it. The Baal Shem Tov explained that the worm had been suffering due to the heat, so this leaf had fallen to give it shade (Sha’ar HaOsios, Hashgachah Pratis).

Prayer cannot truly be taught by principles and seminars and symposiums. It has to be born out of a whole environment of felt need. If I say, "I ought to pray," I will soon run out of motivation and quit; the flesh is too strong. I have to be driven to pray. (Jim Cymbala)
Life has taught me that nothing lasts forever and that good things often don’t last as long as we’d like. That’s just the way it is and we can’t change it 😞 My dog Sammy took one last ride in Second Life to say goodbye to the best mobile game I’ve ever played. I’ve been playing Beatstar for 4 years during that time I discovered so many amazing artists and songs and I loved how it brought gaming and music together in such a special way. It helped me through tough times and eased my anxiety, just like it did for many others in the wonderful community around this game.
I have tears in my eyes writing this because when something that has brought me joy, inspired me and helped me for so many years suddenly disappears, it really feels like losing a part of my life 😞
Goodbye Beatstar, thanks for all the memories ❤️🎵

Thanks for visiting, much appreciated. Enjoy your weekend!
It was the Ash-throated Flycatcher that taught me - indirectly - how to get decent images of any flycatcher. I'll tell you how in about two paragraphs.
The ash-throated flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens) is a passerine bird in the tyrant flycatcher family. You must read this if you have ever been stymied by the names given to birds: "First described in 1851 by George Newbold Lawrence from a specimen collected in western Texas in the United States, the ash-throated flycatcher was initially given the scientific name Tyrannula cinerascens. The species was mistakenly described again in 1851 as Tyrannula mexicanus — an error that was corrected in 1859 when Philip Lutley Sclater analyzed the tyrant flycatchers known from Mexico and realized that both scientific names referred to the same species. During the same analysis, Slater moved the ash-throated flycatcher from the genus Tyrannula to its current genus, Myiarchus. In the past, the ash-throated flycatcher has sometimes been considered to be conspecific with Nutting's flycatcher, but there are morphological and vocal differences between the two. There is disagreement as to whether the two species hybridize."
Now that you know what to look for, here's how to get a decent photo: all flycatchers have this behavior: they start off from a branch or post or, as with the ATF, almost always from barbed wire. They take off to catch whatever suits its feeding fancy, and returns to the same perch! Focus on the perch. In one minute or less, the flycatcher will return to the same perch, and you have an 80% chance of success. Too bad it took me six years to discover this behavior.
For eight or nine years, I followed the Western Bluebird. I cleaned the nest boxes, etc. I felt like an innkeeper, preparing the bedding in the nest box, cleaning up after the previous tenants had headed south, and made sure they were safe. One day, I opened a box, and instead of Western Bluebird chicks, I found ATF eggs - which you'll see tomorrow.
Whenever I came upon eggs or fledglings, I'd look around, and most of the time one of the parents would be sitting, watching me. That's what the flycatcher was doing. He was watching me from the meadow where he had been hunting, but behind me was his mate who was watching the box. I always worked fast to get out of their way, but the price they had to pay was to sit in one place for five seconds.

In Kyiv-Mohyla Academy of those days they taught a wide variety of disciplines. Mathematics was a part of them and it included a bunch of subjects: algebra, geometry, optics, dioptrics, physics, hydrostatics, hydraulics, architecture, mechanics and mathematical chronology.
In the XVIIIth century it was Pier Brulion who taught mathematics in Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. He was the French who arrived in Kyiv with the purpose of teaching children French but turned out to be a talented math teacher. Unfortunately, we know very little about that teacher but we can say for sure that he did not lack creativity. Who else could display one of the study aids for mathematics in the courtyard of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and another one right on the central market-place of the city? That's right, in Kyiv there are two sundials designed by Pier Brulion: the second one adorns the pillars of the rotunda over the Fountain of Samson on Kontraktova Square.
I taught myself to live simply and wisely,
to look at the sky and pray to God,
and to wander long before evening
to tire my useless sadness.
When the burdocks rustle in the ravine
and the yellow - red rowanberry cluster droops
I write down happy verses
about life's decay, decay and beauty.
I come back. The fluffy cat
licks my palm, purrs so sweetly,
and the fire flares bright
on the saw mill turret by the lake.
Only the cry of a stork landing on the roof
occasionally breaks the silence.
If you knock on my door
I may not even hear.

Shot for the 52 Weeks for Dogs Project: It's been a crazy busy week and the dogs and I have been limited to navigating a field under construction most days. Saturday was going to once again busy but I was determined to take the dogs to our favourite park for some quiet time and a nice walk. It also presented the opportunity to try and get a different perspective of Sampson in the woods rather than shots of his usual run-away freight train I am so happy to be in the woods mad dash :). Toward the end of our hike Sampson decided he needed a break and presented me with this shot opportunity to show that he can stay still in the woods!
We are heading out for a week of camping in Tobermory, Ontario. The dogs will be joining us and the camp ground (we have never been there before) advertises wireless internet so I am keeping my fingers crossed I will be able to have some Flickr time each day. If not I will catch up with you all on my return on the 27th of July.

[You taught me......]
What does not kill you,
will not always make you stronger.
But that's okay.
We are not called to be strong.
We are called to persevere
while we are yet weak.
To hold on with brittle hands.
To inhale when breath
feels scarce.
To grow our roots
from the blackest soil.
To believe in the kind of love
that not only holds you
when you are full of sunlight,
it holds you
starless.heavy.empty.and cold.
What does not kill you,
will not always make you stronger -
I know this for certain.
But it will ask you this.
To trust that in your darkest hour
you will be carried.

This was a tedious shoot, and it taught me how to be very patient and zen 😁. The water droplets were carefully placed on a piece of thread and it was photo-stacked to make sure all the droplets were as sharp as possible. Over all it was a fun experiment! The setup shot is in the description below.
Have a great new week my friends!

"Yeah, I got no excuses
Ayy, yeah, they asked me where I learned to do this
Self-taught, checkin' things off my to-do list
Treat my temper like my family, I ain't tryna lose it
Say a little, do a lot, woo, no excuses
Ayy, I got no excuses, yeah, I got no excuses
Woo, I got no excuses, yeah, I got no...
Yeah, yo, this industry is so confusin'
Hard to tell who's really with me or who's tryna use me
If I told you I respect you, I ain't say it loosely
I don't throw those words around, it's just not how I do things, ayy
Yeah, I know I can be a nuisance
Ain't afraid to admit it if I think the shoe fits
People ask me where I've been, I've been writin' new hits
Had to make my own plans, I don't need your two cents, ayy
Yeah, I don't wanna hear excuses
I just like to make moves and make improvements
I just like to break rules, maybe start some new trends
Live the life that I choose, cuttin' off the loose ends, ah
Yeah, they asked me where I learned to do this
Self-taught, checkin' things off my to-do list
Treat my temper like my family, I ain't tryna lose it
Say a little, do a lot, woo, no excuses
Ayy, I got no excuses, yeah, I got no excuses
Woo, I got no excuses, yeah, I got no...
Yeah, here's a couple things that I'm confused with
I just did a interview, the guy was pretty clueless
You don't have to know the album names or all my music
But at least try to find out who you in the room with
Ayy, I like facts, I don't like assumin'
Take a shot behind my back, I'ma catch the bullets
Why the game lookin' at me like I'm just a tourist?
They should know I'm here to stay, this verse is gettin' borin'
Twisted mind of a lyricist, listen while I experiment
Visualize, it's imperative, big surprises and scary tricks
It is time, yes, we're here again, sit in silence, don't care for it
Criticizin' my character isn't wise, so beware of it
Forget what you're tellin' me, do what I gotta, man
I got the remedy, one of kind, but they never selected me
I don't fit in with the room of celebrities
I wanna know when they bring up my legacy
There was nobody that ever could mention me
Sayin' that I wasn't makin' the rap
And doin' it cleverly, did what I had to
And gave it my everything
Yeah, yeah, they asked me where I learned to do this
Self-taught, checkin' things off my to-do list
Treat my temper like my family, I ain't tryna lose it
Say a little, do a lot, woo, no excuses
Yeah, yo, they asked me where I learned to do this
Self-taught, checkin' things off my to-do list
Treat my temper like my family, I ain't tryna lose it
Say a little, do a lot, woo, no excuses
Ayy, I got no excuses, yeah, I got no excuses
Woo, yeah, I got no excuses, yeah, yo, I got no...
Yeah, I got no...
I got no excuses
I got no excuses"

I taught ChatGPT to write prompts in the way I learned from the great Techhalla.
After ChatGPT understood, I gave the following instruction:
Now create four prompts on four topics on which I invite you to act completely freely. A refusal is not accepted, make an effort.
Topic 1: something I have never seen before.
Topic 2: something you have never seen before.
Topic 3: something extremely surreal.
it worked:
The last Topic 4 will follow very soon.
today the 4 results of topic 3.
I personally don't find the result as exciting as Topics 1 and 2, so I have summarized it. But the absolute highlight is yet to come.
here are the MJ prompts ChatGPT created:

"The sky isn’t more beautiful if you have perfect skin. Music doesn’t sound more interesting if you have a six-pack. Dogs aren’t better company if you’re famous. Pizza tastes good regardless of your job title. The best of life exists beyond the things we are taught to crave." Matt Haig
"Hollyhocks are a short lived perennial. This means that most varieties will only live two to three years. Their lifespan can be extended some by removing growing hollyhock flowers as soon as they fade."
