Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to Task Force Red Dragon return to Virginia and reunite with loved ones and fellow Soldiers Sept. 25, 2022, in Sandston, Virginia, after serving on federal active duty since November 2021. More than 1,000 Virginia and Kentucky National Guard troops under the command of the Lynchburg-based 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team conducted security operations throughout the Horn of Africa and provided the East Africa Response Force in support of the U.S. government for crisis response throughout East Africa. A transfer of authority ceremony with the New York Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment was conducted Sept. 19. More Soldiers will return to Virginia in the coming weeks after completing administrative tasks transitioning them back to a traditional National Guard status, but an exact date for their return has not been finalized. Brig. Gen. Andrew M. Rohling, Task Force Forge Commander, transferred authority to Col Douglas A. Sims II today during a ceremony in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. This marks the end of the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division’s deployment, and welcomes in 2nd Squadron, 3d Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary Division.
Special guests include Gen. John W. Nicholson, Resolute Support Commander; Maj. Gen. Jeffrey L. Bannister, U.S. Forces Afghanistan- Support Deputy Commanding General; and Maj. Gen. J.T. Thomson, who will be the new USFOR-A- Support Deputy Commanding General when 10th Mountain Division and 1st Calvary Division transfer authority next week.
MG Bannister also took the opportunity to present BG Rohling with his Defense Superior Service Medal for his as his deputy and his task force command.
On Saturday, Aug. 27, the 107th Airlift Wing will deploy 45 Airmen as part of TASK FORCE IRENE will be stationed at Camp Smith near Albany NY. These airmen will remain in place at the center to ride out the storm and then immediately respond to aid civil authorities as directed in New York City. Sgt. 1st Class John Walk tracks Maryland National Guard operations for the Task Force Phoenix Emergency Operations Center. Task Force Phoenix was created to oversee the Maryland Guard's response to the recent snowstorms which dumped as much as 50 inches of snow on the state in under a week.

Members of Village Disaster Management Committee (VDMC), Task Force and community discuss of their preparedness to face floods (flood shelter, arrangement of shelter materials, listing of vulnerable families etc.) in the village with UNICEF officials in Supaul, one of the worst flood-affected districts in Bihar Province. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) programme, is a part of the over all objective of the Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) program. UNICEF's Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) programme started in 2009 and now covers 255 villages and 155 schools in eight flood-prone districts mostly in northern Bihar. Of 38 districts in the state 28 are flood prone. Earth quakes are also common, five districts being in seismic zone V and 21 in zone IV. The programme, implemented by seven NGO partners, not only empowers schools and communities in identifying risks it also assists them in initiating disaster risk reduction (DRR) measures and linking them to government programmes.
