Weekly Montana #12: 12/03/2016 [from my project to take and display one photo per week from the state of Montana]
I took the family out in the woods on Saturday to hunt for our Christmas tree. The Forest Service issues a permit for a nominal fee that allows cutting of a tree. So, we headed up toward Lolo Pass - along the Lewis and Clark Route between Montana and Idaho - to find one. The setting was idyllic, with active snowfall, no wind, and absolute silence.
This photo is looking down a very small creek (so small it is covered with snow) that has opened a view downhill through the forest. We ended up with an 11-foot subalpine fir, which embodies the title of the photo and song. Translated from the German, "tannenbaum" is "fir tree".

one of a few of my favorite Christmas things is a 20-year old music box which plays the classic O Tannenbaum. and here's the Vienna Boys' Choir's version of that song (video will open in a new window)
Continuing the series of local paths travelled with some regularity, this is a bit different in that the entire composition of trees in this particular area is coniferous...a wide variety of firs, pines, and spruces being represented in every size imagineable, providing a wonderful variety of seasonal photo ops as well as a strong sense of Christmas, reminiscent of days of wandering similar tracts with dashing children and saw in hand seeking the perfect tree. I wonder if at one time it was, in fact, a Christmas tree farm, not an uncommon commercial enterprise in the vicinity.
My third and fourth packs of polaroids with the OneStep+ were colored instant films with holiday themed frames. Here are some of the shots I liked the most from the most recent Christmas celebrations.

The world frozen for a moment.
Time stood still, my breaths floated in space, my mind empty except for the feelings of joy and awe, as I was allowed into this secret space of nature and it was all mine for that frozen moment.
This is Swansea City Centre's Christmas tree this year. The traditional Norwegian Spruce has been replaced with a space age looking one. It's taken me a while to recover from the shock ;) but I've grown to like it.
