Gabby doing her best to look super-pathetic in her pumpkin costume. Anything for Big Star tacos! (I'd dress up in a tutu too if it meant free Big Star!)

one of my favorite recent pictures of her. sometimes, she's frustratingly impossible to shoot because she has her own idea of what she should do when i point a camera at her. other times, she nails it.

Wamego is a city in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 4,372. It is part of the Manhattan, Kansas Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Wamego was platted in 1866. It was named for a Potawatomi Native American chief.

Located in Wamego is a museum dedicated to The Wizard of Oz , featuring a collection of over 25,000 Oz artifacts on permanent loan from Friar Johnpaul Cafiero. The Museum was founded in April 2004, and led to the development of several other small businesses with the Oz theme, which have come to be known as the "Oz Cluster." Prominent Oz-related businesses include the Oz Winery and Toto's Tacoz.

On the first weekend of October, Wamego holds its Annual OZtoberFEST, an Oktoberfest-type celebration with an Oz theme. The 2009 Festival hosted 3 of the existing original Munchkins from the MGM movie, Oz Historian and Emmy Award winner John Fricke, Robert and Roger Baum (Great Grandsons of L. Frank Baum), Judy Garland Collector Michael Siewert, and Author Steve Cox. The festival also hosted Hot Air Balloon Rides, Tallgrass Brewery Beer Garden, the Yellow Brick Road Bike Ride, and the Columbian Theatre's Production of The Wizard of Oz.

I don't know if anyone ever reads my descriptions, but I write them anyway, so there!!

Was out today (August 20th 2021) on a forced vacation day, from 9:30AM til' almost 4PM. 80F today but it felt like 100F. This is a very active line and I probably flicked 20 freights today. 750+ flicks. By the time I get rid of a few duplicates, and bad ones, I'm guessing it'll be about 700 +/-. 700 to straighten, fix any color issues, upload, and also ID the writers. It's lots of time and as you can imagine, it's a lot of work, but so far it's been fun. I'm trying to not rush myself to post before I'm ready. I already have the flicks, and they're timeless. So getting them posted ASAP!!!!!! is not really my concern. Duh..

Had an interesting interaction with a guy while out there. Guy with backpack had walked back and forth across the tracks a few times. The lat time I saw him he was on the other side of a set, about 100 yards away. Next thing you know he's coming closer..... Closer..... And I'm like WTF? I'm way out here minding my own business. He walks within' like 10 ft. of me and I say "How ya' doin'?" he says something, and then says "Trains?" and I say "Yep." and he says "Oh.." and walks away. I think he was feelin' me out, as there's a small population of people who's homes are shall I say, mobile. I've talked to a few of them, and have never had a bad interaction, I just don't like people walkin' up on me when I'm trying to get away from the rest of the world out by the tracks. I go out there to get away from people, not to interact.

======================

I follow some other amazing photographers on flickr, but for this I will talk about the ones who flick the freights. There are a few that I really love. Some it's because of the great locations they shoot at, and others it's the amazing little details they manage to capture. For me (right now) I don't have the luxury of walking the lines and seeing pieces static. 99.999% of my flicks the freight is rolling by at 10-50 mph and sometimes I don't really even know what I have until I get home, dump the memory cards and go through the photos. Because of this, most of my flicks are just straight on shots and documenting what I saw and where. I saw this freight here, on this date, here's what was on it, and i captured it. Buffed or scraped next week, well I have it on "film" for future generations (sounds corny, I know). There are times when a freight will stop in-front of me, and I'll walk up and get some shots of monikers, but it's rare.

Obviously in any area there are sidings where freights park for extended periods, I know a few spots, but as I get older, and older, do I really want to leave my car parked on the side of the road and walk 2 miles to capture some little details I might normally miss? I'd love to, but it's just not practical for me at this time, any many other people do it better than I could. Retirement is getting closer every day, maybe then, when my weekdays are free. :-)

======================

During the Covid lockdown, I was working from home, and I was getting out benching like 2 & 3 times a month. Back at work, I'm lucky to have the energy to get out once a month. Every time I do manage to get out, I come home and my batteries feel re-charged. It's been so f-ing hot here in SoCal though, I can't wait for cooler weather and some clouds in the sky.

As always, thanks to the writers!

she begged and begged for dessert from the moment we set foot in the store. since it was grandpa's last day in town, extending the lunch so we could talk more wasn't that bad of an idea.

so, while the adults sat and talked, she took our money and went up to the counter to place her order. she was standing there forever before anyone noticed she was there, and we basically just sat there wondering how she would handle the situation. she was as patient and quiet as i have ever seen her be.

it was too cute.

from TACOZ. At this point in the day I was hurting

after about two weeks straight working on our bathroom, we needed to get out of the house last night. so, of course, we went to the best mexican restaurant in kansas: toto's tacoz.

that's right: toto's.

it's a great, tiny little place (only has seating inside for 10) run by a couple from california (which explains the great mexican food, as far as i'm concerned).

my favorite dish? the yellow brick burro'd.

get it? the yellow brick b'road?

don't worry...the food's a lot better than the jokes =]

all from one lunch at toto's tacoz.

it's one of the first times that i noticed how different a picture can look when the white balance is off, or at least doesn't match. i processed the first one differently than the other two (though i actually processed the first one last) because i wasn't thinking of putting them together like this, so i didn't think it would matter. then, when i did decide to do this, i knew that the white balance would be an issue.

that was also about the time i decided i didn't care. i was too lazy to go back and copy the settings from the first and apply them to the last. ah well.

see them each bigger below.

with the oz museum being one of the centerpieces of the downtown wamego, a good number of the surrounding businesses have taken on a bit of an oz theme: there's toto's tacoz (our favorite mexican food in kansas), the scizzors of ahzz (beauty salon), the flying monkey business (an antiques/home furnishings store, i believe), and the emerald city market (gourmet foods market).

we stopped by the emerald city market the other night after dinner at toto's to pick up a couple of chocolate truffles. we marveled a bit at their new display case filled with fancy glass something-or-others.

the sign next to the display: unsupervised children will be fed lots of sugar and an espresso and given a puppy on the way out.

exploring the last possible media.

she is a pioneer, unmatched in her field. completely unrecognized by the teeming masses.

my oh my, how i love me some of that yummy window light.

and how i love me that sweet little girl that's getting too big too quickly.

taking advantage of the massive front window and all the lovely light while she takes advantage of having grandpa in town (who lets her get dessert).

from the fruitvale taco truck peter takes us to. so good!

all from one lunch at toto's tacoz.

this man has lived quite a life. first two wives passed away, then a divorce that he didn't want. arthritis. 9 kids, 8 living. almost always seemed to be working several jobs to make ends meet. and i can't say that i can remember him complaining about anything.

except for the arthritis...it really hurts sometimes.

he's one amazing man that i look up to and admire. he's my dad.

happy father's day

(a bit early because 1. i'll forget as we get to the weekend, and 2. we don't have internet at home)

you know we never would have given in if it weren't for the fact that grandpa was there visiting for the week and it was his last day with us.

these kids are so lucky sometimes. spoiled, some would say.

that's okay, because daddy got dessert too. =]

i just loved this in black and white and had to post it here, too.

the last day my dad was with us before heading home to utah on a 6 am flight out of an airport 2 hours away (that you need to be at 2 hours early in order to pass security--you do the math).

just because i couldn't decide whether i liked it better in color or in black and white.
