We've been praising how easy the Foxtel iQ2 is to use and how convenient it is to be able to record shows to watch when we are free, rather than watch the crap that is on.
Then suddenly last week, the iQ2 starts dying. Some scheduled recordings fail for no apparent reason. All it said was "error code 40".
When I call tech support, all I got was "oh, error 40, we need to wipe it". Wipe. As in totally clear out all the settings and recorded shows. Wow. No diagnostics and repairing it, just wipe it. When I pressed her for the meaning of "error code 40", all I got was that the harddrive might have developed faults and needs to be wiped.
Um... faults? Wiping won't fix faults! Why don't they include some tools to scan the harddrive for errors? At least you know what is going on.
That's the problem with consumer electronics these days. They are just black boxes.
I wonder if I can remove the harddrive and and fsck it or something? No chatter nor solutions on the web either...

BUH-BYE: Jon Stewart's a happy camper today. Just months after The Daily
Show anchor went on CNN's Crossfire and ripped the show ‹ and cohost Tucker
Carlson ‹ to shreds, the cable news net axed Carlson and his political
slugfest. "I guess I come down more firmly in the Jon Stewart camp," CNN CEO
Jonathan Klein told the Associated Press. "[Carlson]'s career aspirations
and our programming needs just don't synch up. He wants to host his own
nighttime show and we don't see that in the cards here." Indeed, Carlson has
reportedly been in talks with MSNBC to fill Deborah Norville's prime-time
slot. Courtesy of TVGuide.com
