The Brunkeberg Tunnel in Norrmalm, Stockholm, is a 231-metre-long passageway for pedestrians through the esker Brunkebergsåsen. The tunnel was inaugurated in 1886 by King Oscar II.
I passed this tunnel for months when I cycled past almost daily, but never had the time to explore where it went when I was a teenager. Then one day I did have some spare time and found that whilst it didn't save any time on my journey, it took me on much quieter roads for a while.
As seen on a windy & wet day.

Right in the gut of rugged Rock Creek Canyon on Rio Grande’s Craig Branch, an eastbound coal train exits Tunnel 45 between Crater and Volcano, Colorado, on September 8, 1992. Four Tunnel Motors are up front, with two more as a swing helper in the middle of the train, with a symbol of AINNC (Axial mine to Nixon in Colorado Springs).
A view inside the 213 metre long tunnel that gives access to the Durie Hill elevator in Wanganui.
Built in 1919, The Durie Hill Elevator is New Zealand’s only public transport elevator and is still used on a daily basis by locals and visitors.
Access is through a long pedestrian tunnel, or an adit to be more precise – this tunnel has no exit point. You’ll be welcomed aboard the elevator for the 66-metre ride to the top of the hill. The ride costs $2 (each way) for adults, $1 for children and eftpos is available. The elevator operates 8am-6pm weekdays, 10am-5pm weekends and public holidays and is open every day except Christmas day.
The construction of the Durie Hill Underground Elevator enabled the development of the Durie Hill Garden Suburb in 1920. This suburb was planned by the architect Samuel Hurst Seager and is considered to be the first modern New Zealand suburb. The elevator continued to be operated by the company until 1 June 1942 when control passed to the Council, which continues to own and maintain the complex today.
