Tui back in the frangipani this year. Skinny one, but no doubt he'll fatten up over the next few weeks. Lovely hearing him singing away. I need to build a little hide on the roof so I can get closer.

I was so very excited to see an adult and a couple of juvenile tui come down onto the flax flowers near my back deck to feed- so close... Now the flowers have all become seed-heads, and it will be summer in nearly a year’s time before any come back to feed. And this year has been a ‘mast flowering’ year, with lots of flowers. It might be several years before there is quite such a feast to attract them so often to my backyard again.

One of the classic New Zealand birds is the tui with his black body and white tufts of neck feathers.
Tui in Kowhai tree singing. Apparently when you can see a Tui's beak opening but can hear no sound it's singing at a frequency that humans can't hear.
Out once again photographing Tui's. They make wonderful subjects and soon they will be gone again up country. So I'm making the most of them.
