Tui on Flax, Karori, Wellington

Photographed in my garden at Little River, Banks Peninsula, New Zealand.

This male Tui (in our Bottlebrush tree) is putting on display of aggression.

Normally he would keep much of the tree foliage between himself and me - and I do not get a photo. In this instance he is getting ready to chase off other birds. His feathers are raised and ruffled to give the impression of increased size, and he is paying me no attention.

Note: this is my third photo of a Tui in my FLICKR collection.

A pattern of lots of Tui.

Maori name: Tui

Other names: Parson bird

Scientific name: Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae

Adult birds are about 30cm long. The male is heavier (120g) females about 90g. Appear black but in the light have green, bluish-purple and bronze colouring; a lacy collar of white filaments and white throat tufts; black legs and curved black bill and a white wing bar. Both sexes are alike. Juvenile tui are a dull slate black with glossy wings and tail, a greyish-white throat without the white throat tufts.

The Tui appears black from distance but is actually a mix of greens, blues and bronzes with grey whisker-like feathers around the neck. It also has a couple of pure white throat tufts.
