Hillside teahouses in Jiufen, Taiwan.

The winding east side entrance path to the Maryhill Museum of Art.

To the right is the historic, Sam Hill three-story Beaux Arts mansion. To the left, with Mount Hood in the background, is the museum's first physical expansion the Mary and Bruce Stevenson Wing that opened to the public in May 2012. It includes a plaza that overlooks the Columbia River, an education center, a collections suite, and a café.

The new contemporary wing blends in beautifully with the original Beaux Arts mansion as it extends south toward the cliffs that overlook the Columbia River. The Mary and Bruce Stevenson Wing was honored as Engineering News Record (ENR) Northwest’s 2012 Best Project. The expansion was also named by ENR as the Best Cultural / Worship Project in the Northwest in 2012. Together the museum’s two buildings have a combined 35,000 square feet of space.

On this sunny spring day (May 11, 2021) the landscaped 26 acres surrounding the museum are a lush green. The grounds contain several outdoor sculptures including Missive, a 1976 bronze by James Lee Hanson off the path to the right in the foreground. Maryhill’s gardens are an oasis of green within the stark, dry landscape of the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge. The museum is surrounded by several expansive lawns, shade trees and picnic areas, and the William and Catherine Dickson Sculpture Park, where visitors can enjoy the large-scale outdoor sculptures from the museum’s permanent collection.

Helen is a city in White County, Georgia, United States, located along the Chattahoochee River. The population was 531 at the 2020 census. The city has now been made over, as a tourist attraction, to look like an old-world Bavarian village. This idea was suggested by John Kollock, an Atlanta artist.

Helen was laid out by John E. Mitchell of St. Louis during the years 1912 and 1913. When a name for the small settlement was being sought, a lumber official suggested the name of his daughter and there was little opposition. Called the "Star of the North," Helen was incorporated on August 18, 1913. Helen was built along the former route of the Unicoi Turnpike, a 1,000-year-old Native American trail connecting Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Formerly a logging town in decline, Helen resurrected itself by becoming a replica of a Bavarian alpine town, in the Appalachians instead of the Alps. This design is mandated through zoning first adopted in 1969, so that the classic southern German style is present on every building, even on the small number of national franchisees present. In 1975, Documerica photographer Al Stephenson documented the life, recreation, and economy of the Helen area before and during the reconstruction of the settlement.

The best-known dock in Liverpool is the Albert Dock, which was constructed in 1846

Liverpool is a city in North West England. Its growth as a major port was paralleled by the expansion of the city throughout the Industrial Revolution. In the 19th century, it was a major port of departure for Irish and English emigrants to North America. Liverpool's status as a port city has attracted a diverse population, which was historically drawn from a wide range of cultures and religions.

Several areas of the city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2004. The city celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007, and was jointly named the 2008 European Capital of Culture.

Liverpool is closely associated with the arts, in particular music. The popularity of the Beatles and other music groups from the Merseybeat era contributed to the city's status as a tourist destination. The city has the second-highest number of art galleries and national museums in the United Kingdom, with only London having more.

From The Guest House at Graceland, we go up Elvis Presley Blvd. just a bit and find this: not bad looking as far as little motels go, but for the more economy-minded tourists coming to Graceland of course -- and nothing wrong with that! This was a Scottish Inns location in the late 00's, then an Econo Lodge, and possibly even something else prior to becoming Memory Lane. It might look like a remodeled classic 1970's motel, but was built in 2005, on the site of a former (definitely classic!) 70's Denny's Restaurant.

It comprises a range of stepped travertine terrace formations that has been created over thousands of years as flowing water from two mineral hot springs cooled and deposited carbonate minerals on the mountainside". Chateau Gaillard was designed and built by Richard 1st, King of England, Duke of Normandy and more commonly known as Richard the Lionheart, in super fast time, taking only 2 years from 1196 to 1198.

Now 800 years later the ruins still sit majestically 90 metres above the picturesque town of Les Andelys and one of the most beautiful meanders of the river Seine in Normandy.

Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment center, and neighborhood in the Midtown Manhattan section of New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Brightly lit by numerous billboards and advertisements, it stretches from West 42nd to West 47th Streets, and is sometimes referred to as "the Crossroads of the World", "the Center of the Universe", "the heart of the Great White Way", and "the heart of the world". One of the world's busiest pedestrian areas, it is also the hub of the Broadway Theater District and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. Times Square is one of the world's most visited tourist attractions, drawing an estimated 50 million visitors annually. Approximately 330,000 people pass through Times Square daily, many of them tourists, while over 460,000 pedestrians walk through Times Square on its busiest days.

Formerly known as Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the then newly erected Times Building, now One Times Square. It is the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop, which began on December 31, 1907 and continues to attract over a million visitors to Times Square every year.

Times Square functions as a town square, but is not geometrically a square; it is closer in shape to a bowtie, with two triangles emanating roughly north and south from 45th Street, where Seventh Avenue intersects Broadway. Broadway runs diagonally, crossing through the horizontal and vertical street grid of Manhattan laid down by the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, and that intersection creates the "bowtie" shape of Times Square.

The southern triangle of Times Square has no specific name, but the northern triangle is called Father Duffy Square. It was dedicated in 1937 to Chaplain Francis P. Duffy of New York City's U.S. 69th Infantry Regiment and is the site of a memorial to him, along with a statue of George M. Cohan, and the TKTS ticket booth.

Early History

When Manhattan Island was first settled by the Dutch, three small streams united near what is now 10th Avenue and 40th Street. These three streams formed the "Great Kill" (Dutch: Grote Kil). From there the Great Kill wound through the low-lying Reed Valley, known for fish and waterfowl and emptied into a deep bay in the Hudson River at the present 42nd Street. The name was retained in a tiny hamlet, Great Kill, that became a center for carriage-making, as the upland to the south and east became known as Longacre.

Before and after the American Revolution, the area belonged to John Morin Scott, a general of the New York militia, in which he served under George Washington. Scott's manor house was at what is currently 43rd Street, surrounded by countryside used for farming and breeding horses. In the first half of the 19th century, it became one of the prized possessions of John Jacob Astor, who made a second fortune selling off lots to hotels and other real estate concerns as the city rapidly spread uptown.

By 1872, the area had become the center of New York's horse carriage industry. The locality had not previously been given a name, and city authorities called it Longacre Square after Long Acre in London, where the horse and carriage trade was centered in that city. William Henry Vanderbilt owned and ran the American Horse Exchange there. In 1910 it became the Winter Garden Theatre.

As more profitable commerce and industrialization of Lower Manhattan pushed homes, theaters, and prostitution northward from the Tenderloin District, Longacre Square became nicknamed the Thieves Lair for its rollicking reputation as a low entertainment district. The first theater on the square, the Olympia, was built by cigar manufacturer and impresario Oscar Hammerstein I. According to Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898, "By the early 1890s this once sparsely settled stretch of Broadway was ablaze with electric light and thronged by crowds of middle- and upper-class theatre, restaurant and cafe patrons."

Time Square
