Pada sebuah postingan di salah satu situs pemberitaan, Merdeka, pada tahun 2016 yang lalu disebutkan tentang seorang wania yang tergabung dalam sindikat pemalsu surat kendaraan diciduk oleh petugas kepolisian. Bagaimana tidak, selain memalsukan surat (yang terdiri dari BPKB dan STNK), kerugian yang dialami para konsumen juga tak sedikit, bisa mencapai Rp 100 juta hanya dalam waktu 2 bulan.
Tak sampai di situ saja, di sejumlah daerah di Indonesia ternyata masih terjadi banyak sekali kasus BPKB palsu yang tentu saja merugikan konsumen dan pemilik kendaraan.
Untuk menghindarkan konsumen dari pemalsuan surat serta potensi kerugian yang lebih parah lagi, TMC Polda Metro Jaya melalui websitenya merilis sejumlah cara untuk mengenali BPKB yang asli. Yang setidaknya, ada 5 ciri BPKB yang asli.
1. Cover BPKB asli lebih mengkilap daripada yang palsu.
2. Hologram BPKB asli tak akan berubah warna dan tetap terlihat berwarna silver jika disorotkan ke sinar, sementara yang palsu akan memancar dengan warna kuning.
3. Adanya nomor di bawah bagian hologram, yang berfungsi untuk mengategorikan pemilik kendaraan berdasarkan domisili. Namun sejumlah nomor tak akan bisa dideteksi pembacaannya karena memang bersifat rahasia milik Korlantas.
4. Pada bagian identitas pemilik, yang palsu acapkali ditemukan dalam kondisi seperti dicetak ulang setelah sebelumnya dihapus.
5. Pada halaman ke-14 ada logo Korlantas yang muncul hanya jika disinari menggunakan ultraviolet. Selain itu, kertasnya juga bertekstur kasar mengikuti pola yang ada pada logo.
