Fri. the 8th and Out & About with new glass.

This was one of the participants in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1993. It's not listed in the programme of the event, but it's a 1924 Thornycroft BX Tipper, and an entry in the 1995 programme of the event gives this information:

Thornycroft BX Tipper, 1924 TC9816

Entered by W.H Bowker Limited, Bamber Bridge, Preston

This vehicle was fitted with hydraulic tipping gear and was originally fitted with solid tyres and converted to pneumatic tyres during the 1930's. Withdrawn from service around 1960 and was restored in 1992 and is now finished in the correct period livery of William Bowker Ltd.

Orange Tip (female) on Cuckoo Flower

Yesterday I had a hot tip to find a Barn Owl that lives by the canal across the fields from us. I got up at 6.40 and went to find it ( car temp -9.5) stood in the field for a good hour until the sun came up.. not a bloody sausage !!! Will I try tomorrow??!!

The first person that says the sunrise was worth it, gets one between the eyes LOL....

Friends of mine who look at birds told me about this reserve and that it might have some interesting butterflies, so in the hot sunny weather yesterday I decided to give it a look.

I suspect it will only have common, widespread species from what I saw, though apparently purple hairstreaks are seen there. On my visit there were a few common species around.

These were the most common species seen but it is the first time this year I have photographed them with wings closed showing the beautiful pattern.

This is the first female I have seen this year. It was actually quite windy and not easy to get a clear look at this individual.

Taken at Noar Hill in very unfavourable weather conditions - cloudy and windy. This was the only butterfly we saw all morning but it was fairly obliging.

Orange Tip - Garden, Hullbridge, Essex. This one or others visited the garden all afternoon. Great to see with the whites as well.

Tips for water photography (learn't the hard way):

1. Ensure you have a sturdy tripod. (If you are placing the tripod in the water, test the depth and stability first.)

2. Make sure you have a CPL or some type of filter.

3. When the rock is unstable, don't shift your weight too fast.

4. Prepare to get water on your camera & lens.. so bring a towel.

My trip to hopefully see and photograph orange tips was successful even though the sun only remained out for around 40 minutes and there were very few of the cuckoo flowers that are the main attraction at this reserve.

Though not on a flower, I am otherwise very pleased with this photo.

This is one of the Sunflowers that is still upright in our garden. The only modification done was cropping. Thank you for your kind coments and faves.

Latest fashion for all of us girls.

Was quite surprised to see this perfect half moon of water drops so nicely spaced out and the dainty one on the tips of her nose. She is a little beauty as well. second flowering for this one so she is rather special.

With just days before the William Sinclair Horticulture 2ft gauge rail system closed, Motor Rail Simplex 'Sark' (works No.8825 built in 1943) enters the tipping shed at Bolton Fell Mill, Cumbria, on 20th May 2014.

Seen at the start of the 2017 HCVS LtoB run - Looking good!

Don't know why I hadn't tried this before, but the other day I put the mp-e65 on two sets of extension tubes and cackled maniacally as lightning clashed outside. This is the tip of a ballpoint pen, uncropped. You can see the thickness of ink.

Also, if anybody thinks this doesn't belong in poor man's macro let me know. I feel like the group is based more around trying new techniques than about actual investment in photography equipment but if that's not the case I'll remove it.

Tip #1 Don't ask, and don't wait to get kicked out.

A nice male Orange-tip showed well yesterday morning in spite of cold wind

Orange-tip...female...Anthocharis cardamines

The Orange-tip is a true sign of spring, being one of the first species to emerge that has not overwintered as an adult. The male and female of this species are very different in appearance. The more-conspicuous male has orange tips to the forewings, that give this butterfly its name. These orange tips are absent in the female and the female is often mistaken for one of the other whites, especially the Green-veined White or Small White. This butterfly is found throughout England, Wales and Ireland, but is somewhat-local further north and especially in Scotland. In most regions this butterfly does not form discrete colonies and wanders in every direction as it flies along hedgerows and woodland margins looking for a mate, nectar sources or foodplants. More northerly colonies are more compact and also more restricted in their movements.

Critique welcome.

Taken for the Psychedelic Soap Film theme of the 52 Weeks of 2024 weekly challenge group. Having done this theme a couple of years ago and remembering a YouTube on frozen bubbles.

I decided to go with a "frozen" variation. It was just several degrees below freezing but the recommendation was for lower than 20 F. This might have helped to get more "feathered" icicles.

Even though I was in a sheltered spot, the slightest of breeze caused the top of the bubbles to break. Though this could have also been that it did not freeze in time. I might try this again. Would be nice if I knew somebody with a walk in freezer. One good tip was to chill the soap solution before blowing the bubbles.
